Engine cuts out on acceleration

My rover 75 CDi engine cuts out as soon as I try to put my foot down hard. Runs well if I take it steady. I need to switch it off with the key and restart.
Have had to do this while moving with the clutch in . Not good. Any ideas please. Thanks Mick N
