MOT Fail on emissions and ball joint

Ball joint is wear and tear, fair enough. It's a TF 04 with 36000 miles. They are going to flush the exhaust system apparently to lower it, whatever that entails. Could it be sensors such as lambda etc.

It hasn't ticked over at a constant rate since we got it 6 months ago. Any thoughts?
