Unresponsive steering

I noticed the other day while messing around throwing the car side to side, going along in a straight line and quickly turning the wheel left to right repeatedly there's a couple of inches before much really happens. It's not play in the rack, the steering definitely feels "connected" but it just feels as if there's some flex somewhere.



My first assumption is that it's down to the soft sidewalls of my tyres - Uniroyal Rainsport 3's so I'm thinking of trying a pair of different tyres and see if it improves.



I don't think the weight of an old diesel engine helps things either, but the car doesn't change direction as responsively as I think it should.
