Concerned about my engine...
Hey all, new here, my info is in the Introductions section so shall crack on...
Brought a Rover 25 SEI 2005 last week, been tweaking and sorting but something has me worried.
Typical old gent car, owned from new, serviced once a year and driven gently, don't think it's ever seen 3000rpm....until now but I digress. I have given it my usual treatment on a used car, Diesel Grade engine oil and new filter, driven for 1000 miles nearly then drained today and refilled with 10W40 Shell Helix and new filter again, new spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, pollen filter and just replaced the front pads and disks, all done this evening. as it looks like they were original and knackered, wheel wobble on braking and squeaks galore, all fixed.
My concern is, since I brought it, coolant level has been consistent if a little dirty..was intending to change it next week, temp needle just under half, no issues, until today, checked coolant this morning before a drive to London, had lost about half the expansion over night, checked engine as much as I could, no signs of external leak, engine ran fine, no misfire on start up, coolant didn't drop again after a quick top up and a 20 min drive.
So went to London and on arrival checked coolant, had lost about 100ml, oil in coolant...not good!
Decided to stick some card under the car and popped out the plugs to get some clue if the inlet manifold gasket wasn't dropping coolant into the cylinders. Plugs 1 to 3 were fine, plug 4 was very wet and oily, wasn't like mayo, picture more like very very thin dirty oil. Along with this, the rocker cover gasket sprung a leak on the run to London, along front edge, only minor but annoying. No external coolant leak at all.
I've owned a K series 200, 45 and 75, only ever had one HGF and that was coolant in oil and not the other way around, so this is new to me, but by the same point I'm not a person who panics about HGF the moment anything goes wrong, but want to make sure.
What would you say would be the first thing to check and how to go about it? think I'll crack on very shortly and get it sorted, till I have the time and/or the money it can stay in the garage at home.
Thanks in advance.
