Water pump failure 75 CDT - dilemma

Hi

I've just been told that my squealing water pump has caused so much damage that the engine will need changing.

I was losing coolant, losing heat in the car and the fan belt was making squealing noises.

I called an experienced Rover guy out who listened to the engine running, checked the diagnostics on the dash and the temperature ( 142 degrees ) From this test he concluded that the squealing noise was actually ' metal to metal ' and was causing massive damage to the engine. So bad indeed that a new pump would not work properly - if at all.

NO internal examination has taken place btw.

He claimed I'd need a new engine ( which he just happened to have 2 spare )

I quite like this bloke and have no reason to be distrustful but the difference in price between the two jobs is huge and I just want to make sure this seems reasonable. ( £250 for a pump change and £ 650 for replacement engine and new clutch )

I love the car ( we've had her for years ) and getting something so reliable and safe would be a tall order for the money we have spare.

Any advice welcome and urgently required !!

Thanks
