Greasing nuts and bolts

As a cyclist, I'm well used to putting a smear of grease on every bolt I screw into something, whether or not they're differing materials (steel to steel, steel to aluminiun). You don't see this recommended with cars ... but you do get lots of talk about breaking free seized bolts.



A dab of grease on the threads. Good thing or a bad thing? And why?
