MGF: How Can I tell If I Need New Shocks?
Hi, I had a binding rear brake and got the AA out.
A very nice man who freed it up so I could take it to the garage. He loved the car, and understood about Hydragas, got talking about his tome with MG Metros when he was young.
He pointed out how clean the car was underneath but told be the suspension needed lubricating. There is a squeak from the back drivers side.
I took the car to my local garage to get the brake fixed and to get the suspension lubed.
They tell me the car needs new shock absorbers at the back.
It's covered about 55,000 miles since 2001, so it is possible. However, it behaves and handles perfectly, just like all the other MGFs I have owned. What's more, the same garage passed it fit, no advisories at MOT time a couple of hundred miles ago. The car does not bounce when you push the corners down like I have seen on cars with knackered shocks.
This of course is where being mechanically inept does not help. I have good reason to believe my local garage is a good honest place. I have used them for years, they have been in business and family owned since 1948.
They quoted me £270 or thereabouts to fix them.
I really don't feel it needs them.
