Rover 45 Automatic...Problem...help!

Hello you've got to help or its going to cost me dear.. I donated my 40k minty Rover 45 1.8 Auto to me pregnant daughter in Law. She has just come back from Blackpool and the gearbox...perfect up to now...has developed a fault It resembles a knackered clutch it goes on the straight and narrow in auto a bit jerky in manual but seems to slip going up any incline and when trying to accelerate hard. I changed the oil 5k ago, could it be something as simple as that or a blocked filter? Is there anything else affordable I could look at any cables that may need adjusting? otherwise I know exactly who is going to have to stump up!
