Don't know what happened, but the cars bust

Travelling for 3h back from work today, stop start trafficbecause of queues, then when I think the queues have finally ended... The car packs in. Won't create power. The clutch wasn't slipping, the temp needle was where it should be, loads of fuel, no smoke, no dash lights... It just wouldn't go, right before the m1 I got it to a side road doing 5mph in 1st gear pedal to the floor... Then it started working mig again, and just before I went off, it started ******* up again. I'm waiting in the car for family to help me out but what the hell is going on.
