Diag software and adapter

I saw a reply to a thread from DAkta -"Though if it's an earlier one (<53), it won't communicate fault code data with most scanners :("



It prompted me to cogitate, My car is a 54, I have worked in IT for 25 years and in electronics prior to that and electrical before that, so I'm happy to make leads (or buy if they are cheap enough) and get involved with writing and adapting software to suit my needs. I have a scope (Pico) and have access to many other tools. So I thought, ok, I'd like to play with this, not for ££ Gain, just for fun!



So what I need is a pointer to any sites people have used and any feedback good or bad.



I hate re-inventing the wheel :-)
