musical 75

My 2002 75 diesel estate started having a strange musical hum particularly on the overrun and when power was taken off. The sound, a sort of 'middle C' coming it seems to me from somewhere the other side of th dashboard/bulkhead toward the middle /passenger side of the car. Add to that , the engine management light flicking on and off seemingly at random but then realised it too was flashing when lifting off the accelorator. My local garage plugged the car in and said it looked to be a fuel pressure switch/sensor (?). having 'cleared' the fault the management light would scease to flash for a while. Now though I'm getting the sound of what sounds like a small pump running fast...all from the same area from the interior. Like the flashing management light, the new sound is not always continuous ! I've got it booked in for after Christmas to look at again but any help would be welcome. I have to say though, the car still runs ok ! It does my 70 miles a day without complaint !
