Plenum (again)

Hi guys, I know plenum's come up on here all the time, so everyone is pretty bored of them, but got a question. To start, yes I empty my plenum and yes I cut the hole in the plastic cover, but maybe I am just not coordinated enough to get a stick (or similar) through the cut out and down through the drain hole. So I have two question:

1 - what do you think about putting some drain cleaner or similar in to the plennum? I'm sure it would unblock the mud but would it damage/rust the body work or something?

2 - if the plenum is going to fill up with water anyway, and i need to unblock it anyway, is there a downside to cutting out a big section of the plastic cover rather than just a hole to make it a lot easier to get to the drain?
