Intermittent misfire

I've recently developed a problem. If I push down on the accelerator, the engine cuts out. If I keep my foot on the accelerator it cuts back in again, then does the same. This is not a problem around town unless I want to pull out into a line of traffic, but on the motorway, if I'm in fifth and want to pull into the third lane I can get stranded with no power. I've changed the fuel filter in case there is water in the fuel line, but this has made no difference. Any and all suggestions would be welcome.
