mgf 1997 won't start

I have a 1997 mgf 1.8vcc. its been stood for a long time without a battery connected.

I have connected a new battery. it turns over but no attempt to fire up.

I want to rule out any imobilizer issues before looking elsewhere

the key fob opens and locks the car

when locked the red alarm light flashes

when opened the alarm light flashes faster a few times then goes out altogether

can I assume the imobilizer is now off ?
