Starter does not engage with engine?

Rover 218 SLD Turbo



When I go to start the engine the starter just whirrs and does not engage with the engine.



I guess it could be the solenoid? or perhaps the assembly needs cleaning and regreasing? hoping I don't need a new starter motor.



Pretty sure I recall hitting a starter to move a reluctant solenoid but as I don't know exactly where to hit it, I am not going to do that!



Anyone have any tips?
