What is the relay attached to the heater blower motor

Hi guys, trying to get the heater blower going on our 418sld. The motor is fine, have checked once out of car. I have fitted a new blower resistor as before it packed up it only worked on 3 and 4 speeds

Still no joy

There is a large relay the is mounted using one of the heater blower motors mounting points. Is it for the heater blower motor and are they ever known to fail? I'm getting another switch as it rotates more than it should and gets out of line with the numbers on the panel. Could this have a bearing on tings?
