Another interesting visit to a local Scrapyard.
On Monday, my regular visit to my local scrap yard saw a newly arrived 04-Reg 75 1.8t Saloon in white. Looked mint both externally and internally. The reason it was there? Coolant-Oil mix.
Yesterday, needing something else for my cars, I was surprised to see very little of this car had been removed in the four days since it arrived. That's very unusual.
With a few hours to play with, decided to remove a few useful parts such as Cylinder Head, Alternator and Radiator fan. Unfortunately, removal of coolant and oil from the car as part of the decontamination process, the useful top and bottom hoses had been sawn through rendering them useless. It takes a couple of seconds to pull the retaining clip off the Top Hose and off it comes from the coolant elbow without damage.
Checking the Cylinder Head on removal I was delighted to see it in remarkably good shape. Hardly any indentation of Fire Rings ~ just usual witness marks. The elastomer seals mostly displaced was the reason for the oil-coolant mix. There was some play in the Turbocharger's Turbine shaft... so ideally would need a recore, otherwise I would have taken that too.
The couple of images attached show the work area. It was very warm with continuous sunshine so I worked at a very leisurely pace. Even so, perspiration on my shirt collar turned white where the salt had dried. Sometimes when perspiration reaches my eyes it really stings. Whilst working, four folks came over and asked to borrow tools. Three not having English as their first language. It's like a league of nations there every visit nowadays. An Indian chap was so pleased with the tool he borrowed he offered to help me remove the head. He is self-employed mechanic and appeared to have a good understanding of the much maligned K-Series.
Not just MGs and Rovers, some of the cars us Brits throw away nowadays verges on criminal waste. It's what we do.
This was the area I worked in :~
Removal of the Bumper, Crash Bar, Electric Fan, Radiator, Intercooler and AirCon condenser takes time. Having done all that, made a start on removing the Cylinder Head. This is yet another of the many cars which meet a premature end and dealers or owners do not think they're worth bothering with. This white Rover 75 1.8 Turbo was unmarked when I saw it soon after arrival a few days before.
The parts I removed will come in handy ... one day ... they always do. Opportunities like this nice "donor" car will not be available in a year or so.
Thus, as the old saying goes ...as me old Granny used to say many many moons ago when I was nine ...

Good advice and very apt in life particularly where car maintenance is concerned.
For those not familiar with that old saying... the rest :~
