Blueish smoke & oil leak
Hi guys,
Last week I bought a high mileage Rover 75 CDT Tourer. All nice and well....so far. I had to go for a long distance drive of 650km and car started smoking.
It was already dark so didn't notice it that much. So when I parked the car here in Switzerland I saw a lot of smoke and thought it was white smoke. It was already late that night, so decided to check the day after. Seemed not to be white, but more blueish, so 1st thought oil leak, which was confirmed when I had a look under the car. Oil level was below minimum and I can see quite large amount from the valve cover downwards.
My first thought is: valve cover gasket. As the car has 300.000km, and had not been used for a longer period I guess, gasket must have broken somewhere causing oil leak on the outside and going into the valves.
Symptoms I noticed on the car (apart from the smoke)
- not so much power in the lower range until turbo comes into action
- apparently behaving normally (no problem starting the car, no loss of power).
- high usage (will fill up again when close to empty to be sure, but seems I will get only about 800km out of 65litres
My questions are: am I in the right direction with my thought of the valve cover gasket? Should I be able to drive home with this, of course keeping an eye on the oil level.
When arriving home I will change the valve cover gasket, all filters incl. PCV filter and check the MAF sensor, clean EGR Valve and check what's the results regarding diesel usage and smoke.
Any other things I should definitely check?
Thanks for your answers
