45 rear door handle - would self tapper be ok?
My MOT is due next week and at a busy time, so that I wonder whether I can bodge the well known problem of the Rover 45 rear handle coming off the rear securing screw (making it difficult to open the door) by drilling one small hole through the handle casing and carry on drilling into the door and use a long thin self tapper with a washer.
The more exact detail is on a 52 plate Rover 45 JBH paint, and on the passenger side exterior rear door handle the usual problem seems to occur that the rear end on the exterior handle casing pulls away so that the door does not open. We are aware of various fixes all of which involve taking the door apart. That takes time and patience to avoid damaging various parts.
So I was thinking if a self tapper (and washer) went through the rear end of the casing of the door handle and was screwed into the metal of the inside of the door, that would hold and work for the MOT next week. I can put JBH touch up paint on the self tapper head and washer so that they do not notice so much
I do not have a garage and could then do a better fix in the summer. I have read somewhere that handles made after 2005 are of better quality but even if I wanted to keep the current door handle, I would only need to fill a small screw hole and cover with a small amount of touch up paint.
Are there any problems or draw backs with this idea?
