Oil leak, misfires and unstable idle!

Hi all,

I've had almost no engine problems in my car for the past 5 years other than standard, easy stuff. But suddenly I'm having a few problems and I'm wondering if I could get some insight from some of you guys. It might just be in need of a good service and the oil leak could be unrelated but here is what's happening:

Had my backbox replaced the other day because it was rusted rotten. Shortly after, I noticed that my idle speed was very unstable. It sometimes settles for a bit but other times seems to bounce around from anywhere between 500 rpm and 2000 rpm. It's not always that extreme but it just kind of fluctuates around, settles for a bit and then fluctuates again. When I first start the car from cold, the idle speed is around 2000 rpm but it soon drops and starts to fluctuate.

I also noticed that sometimes when I rev the engine, it sticks slightly at around 5000 rpm and is a little slow to return to idle, almost like the throttle body is slightly stuck or something? It's not always a smooth slow down to idle, it's a little rough...

Then last night I noticed that it was misfiring quite badly when I put my foot down in 4th gear - which made me wonder if my unstable idle was due to misfires.

Lastly, this morning I noticed an oil leak, Can't quite figure out where it's coming from but my oil level was very very low and I've had to put quite a lot in to top it up - I've possibly not been checking the level as often as I should - oops!

So - any thoughts on what could be causing all this? Could it be related or coincidental?

Thanks for your help guys...

Mike
