Reliability of 1.8 Turbo engine and AUTO box?

I am looking out for an estate car for my dad.



Preferred choice of car is Ford Mondeo or Vauxhall Astra estate, or possibly a Volkswagen Passat estate - although not sure about the reliability of the Passat. It must be a petrol.



I have come across a 2003 Rover 75 Tourer 1.8 turbo auto



How reliable are these? I have plenty of k series experience however not the turbocharged version - are they any less reliable than the normal 1.8? Is the turbocharger itself a long lasting part? I see a new turbo is £900 new.



Secondly, is the automatic gearbox reliable? I have purposefully avoided the manual as I know all about the hydraulic problems.
