SRS problem

Got in my rover the other day and the SRS warning light stayed on, turned off the car and started it again, still showing the SRS light. Since this has to do with safety i drove straight to a repair shop to have it checked out. 30 pounds later the guy said "we cant get a read-out showing anything from the computer data box". He then said "you have to leave us your car because we need to investigate what the problem is and it can be expensive to fix". I drove home, disconnected the battery, connected the battery and the problem went away. How should i view this? Is the problem really solved or will it just return someday soon? Are the guys at the repair shop just fools or trying to just take my money?
