Could "Sport" mode on the auto be more economical?

I test drove a Merc this week and it was in Sport mode all the time, the owner said he gets better economy.
As an EX-IAM motorcyclist I know we hold the gears longer for a quick escape and get greater economy for being in a lower gear as the engine is less laboured in spite of higher revs.
Anyone done any testing on this?
