Tapping/knocking/clicking noise

thanks. i have been having issues over winter with battery drain, so i wondered if in retrospect perhaps the alternator was failing and something has finally given. is it most likely to be the belt then, rather than a piece of the alternator?

i will do as suggested and put it in gear and push to have a look at the offending item.

insofar as changing the belt, is that something I can do easily enough myself?

ETA: my car has aircon, which is driven by the alternator belt i believe, whether that makes any difference?
