Rear fog light switch question

Hello all, been a while since I was last on here but now that my MGF 1996 VVC has failed it's MOT on a couple of items, I wonder if the forum experts could assist with a question?

The rear fog lights failed as not working, I've read on here that these are controlled via the Multi Function Relay Unit, so I bought a second-hand one, but still no fog lamps, no telltale lamp on the switch and none on the instument warning panel. All earth bonds have been checked, all rear lights and HRW work fine.

I've bridged the blue/geen and red/black wires, (I'm colour-blind) at the switch connector, and voila! the fog lights work as does the instrument warning light.

As an aside, I'm not even sure they ever worked - although the car last passed it's MOT at the same testing station.

My questions are the following:

Should I be hearing a click from the relay inside the MFRU or is it a solid-state relay?
Is it likely that the switch is fubar'd? I know it's not supposed to latch.
What holds the circuit on?
Any other suggestions are very welcome, as I'm an engineer - not an electrician.

Thanks for your time,

Vic
