Notchy reverse gear

I drive a 2002 MG TF 160 with 103,000km on the clock. (64,000 miles for you UK folks).

I struggle to get into reverse gear sometimes. I have to depress the clutch twice before it will go in. It seems very notchy. Other times it goes in easily.

All other gears seem fine.

Not sure what the issue may be? Linkages perhaps? Is it a common problem?
