it won't start

Its a little complicated, I'll try to be brief....

I've been given a 75 tourer. It was free, 'cos the thermostat housing was leaking. I've sorted that (what a ******* of a job) so its time for an MOT. This morning I drove it briefly for a final check and then went for breakfast.

A couple of extra details. When I got it the key fob was broken (the rubber buttons had fallen out, so remote didn't work). Also, the owner told me it had had a drowned ECU, which had been replaced. They were meant to have reprogrammed the fob, but it hadn't worked since.

As I had a few minutes, I replaced the fob plastic cover and the battery, and pressed the buttons. The little LED lit up - so that is working.

When I tried it on the car, nothing happened - so it looks like she was right and it doesn't work. This may be a red herring (tho' its a heck of a coincidence) but.............

The car won't start. Turn the key and all the dashboard lights come on - but turn it to position 2 to start it and absolutely nothing happens. There follow a few question:-

if the immobiliser has been enabled, will the dashboard lights come on in key position one?

If the immobiliser has been enabled, will disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes or so reset it?

Can anyone suggest any other reason it might not work? Its in Park, so I've not been a complete muppet, but might I have forgotten something else? Its far too good to scrap, but we are having a relationship crisis and it doesn't owe me much so it shouldn't push its luck.

One more thing - It is just possible to read in what is left of te orange display (do they all fail with lots of vertical lines) that it says "engine disabled". What would cause that?
