Remapping for dummies by a dummy.
It’s been about a year since I remapped a car for the first time. I was pushed into this as I wasn't happy with the prices being charged "by everyone offering the service".
It wasn't even for me.
I thought it would be a lot like flashing a ROM on a phone and it is. Although some phones today cost more than a Rover is worth.
It’s usually around £200 or more currently to get a remap done.
What do you get for your money?
Most will already have a map for your car that's proven with a known HP output.
Some who "know what they are doing" will be able to make you a custom map for any modifications you have made.
"Know what they are doing" Yes some people know less than me and and make a living from it.
If you have a man with a van turn up who takes a reading and then emails it off to a "master tuner" then he is charging you £200 or more for something you could do yourself for £30. REALLY!
Whats involved if you want to do it yourself?
I have two cables,a Galletto and an MPPS cable. They both cost less than £10 and although tuners will crib about this and the quality they are clones(copies) of what were once very expensive (around a grand) cables. They are readily available on eBay and Amazon.
First you take a reading of your current map through your OBD port on a 75. Other cars have the ECM removed and cracked open for access by a more expensive reader(I've never done this and won't spend £50 to experiment).
Once you have your map YOU can email it away to an eBay tuner and they will send you it back tuned.(typically 150-160hp)
What are they doing to tune it?
They are changing some numbers!
They like me have some software that identifies the areas to be tuned by loading up a "driver".
I have to copy and paste the maps in one at a time but "IF" I knew what I was doing I "think" it could be done with one click.
Sounds easy and it would be if tuners shared information but they don't and they don't want YOU to know either. The tuning sites I've been on you will get NO help at all and in my opinion they are only there for tuners to pick up work from someone struggling to learn.
I can only copy an existing tuned map but again if I knew what I was doing I could percentage tune those maps and this is what a lot of tuners do to actually make a tuned map in the first place. This is where again you have to know what you're doing and I DON'T.
The dangers involved!!!!
This is where people stop! they read all the horror stories about bricking. I've never bricked one and I'm an old fool.
I did my first remap armed with just this video:-
Almost all of the above is going to be addressed by TOAF. You won't need a flasher cable your TOAF cable will do. They are looking to charge for this service but I believe it will be inline with eBay prices. The options are there now in TOAF but flashing in a custom map right now will cause your car not to start.
They have their own maps with known outputs as the Polish members are usually a lot younger than us lot they are dyno testing all the time at their meets.
It looks like fun and it is.
Anything constructive and I'll engage?
I'll help if I can.
