Cable-convertible hood tension

Can I thread a new cable tension through the hood channel without taking the soft top apart? I would just join the new cable to the old broken one and pull it through. Although I noticed they are out of stock most places I go to at the moment. I may have to build one from stainless steel wire myself. Peter.
