MOT failure '53 MG TF 115 Sunstorm edition. Should I sell "as is" or Break?

Quick note to mods: I'm only after some advice and opinions on this post. Which ever way I decide to sell (as a whole or by breaking) I'll purchase membership and list in the correct thread.

Hi all,

I'm after some advice on whether to sell my MG TF as a whole or to break apart. I've enjoyed it over the last few years but it's time for it to go and I've been thinking of selling it for a while. It runs really nicely and until it failed an MOT a couple of days ago these were the only problems with it:

  1. Passenger door lock needs to be replaced. The remote central locking has stopped controling the passenger side and now only controls the drivers door. This stopped working a month ago and I've not got around to getting it fixed. As far as I'm aware, it's simply the passenger door lock that needs to be replaced.

  2. Squealing from what I think is the alternator belt on start up in wet and damp conditions. I think it simply needs a new belt.

I planned to fix the above soon and sell. I think it's a really nice example of a TF. However, it's MOT was due and 2 days ago it failed on the following:

  • 001 Nearside rear lower shock absorber has an excessively worn bush [2.7.4]

  • 002 Nearside front Track rod end ball joint has excessive play [2.2.B.1f]

  • 003 Offside front lower suspension arm corroded and seriously weakened [2.4.G.1]

I think the entire shock absorber will need to be replaced as I've heard you can't just replace the bush on the TF. Along with the lower suspension arm replacement it looks like I'll be paying hundreds of pounds on the car when I'm planning on selling it.

Here are some details on my MG:

  • Black

  • 115 Sunstorm

  • Matching hard top

  • 16" 11 spoke alloys

  • Trim

  • 72k miles

Selling it in great condition and with a full MOT after fixing the niggles I'm thinking it will be worth around £1,800. It's really difficult as the prices vary so much with TF's. Completed listings on eBay vary a lot too, even when taking into consideration age, mileage and condition. If I got £1,500 for it in after fixing it I'd be happy.

So taking off around £500 it's going to cost me to get it into that position, if I can make £1k from it now I'll go down this route.

Without wanting to spend too much time breaking, selling the following parts gets me about £1k quite easily:

  • Hard top (approx. £400)

  • 5x (includes spare) 16" 11 spoke alloy wheels with good tyres (approx. £400)

  • Front AP calipers (approx. £100)

  • Scrap the rest (approx. £100)

I don't want to spend too much time on it so selling the above is really easy. Though, if someone asks for a door or the bonnet that will only add more. So I'm confident in getting around £1k.

I think it's such a shame though to kill her. So if I could sell it in the condition it is for 1k I would. This means it's still on the road and with someone who wants to give it a little TLC. It's a great example of a TF and has years of life left in it. I just don't want to put the time and money into fixing it when I'm only going to sell. And I need to let it go as I can't keep it.

What do you think? Do you think people would be interested in buying it as a whole for £1k or should I just break it up?

Many thanks!
