MG ZS Crackshaft Pully Help !!

Hi , Im new to this forum and need some HELP :-)

My Mg ZS has had a HGF , i'm in the process of stripping down the engine and I have a question re the crankshaft pully timing marks..

I have the camshafts in the right position ( i think ) they are locked with a cam lock tool. and the timing mark was lined up on the crackshaft pulley with the line at approx 1 o clock on the timing case.

The instructions i have been following said to loose the crankshaft pulley nut by putting the car in gear and have someone press the brake.

I did this and the nut is loose :-) however when i have checked the crankshaft pully has moved position its now no longer where it was its moved anticlockwise and is lining up with the 16 mark on the case!!!

I have tried rotating the wheel and seeing if i can get it lined up again ( the crackshaft nut is handtight ) and it rotates but keeps coming back to the same position.

so questions ...

1. how do i get it back lined up ?? could it have slipped when i was using the breaker bar and 22mm socket to undo the nut?? i obviously could see as i was under the car :-) i did have the sprockets locked while i was undoing the bolt , i dont know if this was right or not :-(

2. if the cam sprockets are locked would it be in the " safe position " so when i come to put the pulley back on does it go in the position it is now or do i line it up with the timing mark ( 1 'oclock ) ??

obviously getting it wrong could be a big problem , and i havent removed any more bolts or the belt yet, so i hope its not gone beyond the point of no return

HELP !!!

Cheers

Carl

p.s i was trying to add pics , but i can't get it to work :-(
