Need help with my rover!

Hi all I've recently bought a rover 416si auto. The thing is my key fob is very temperamental and only works when it wants to. I'm assuming it's the battery! I'm going to have a go at changing it myself but I'm worried incase it doesn't work. Or it sets off the immobiliser/alarm. Also wondering if the car will start if I just unlock/lock the car with my key rather than the fob. Any help would be great thanks
