MG TF Buying Advice

I'm about to buy a TF and I would appreciate your advice. I uploaded a few pictures here.

It's in fairly tatty condition externally and there is a knock/rattle when the engine is running. It's claiming to be a 160 VVC and i'm not sure what the best way to tell is (as badges can be faked), but i'm told there is a letter in the VIN which tells whether it is VVC or not so I got a picture of it. It's being sold for £550, reckon I should go for it?

1.4 / 1.8 conrods size

Hi

Does a 1.8 conrod fit onto a 1.4 crank ?

So to convert a 1.4 to 1.6 all I do is swap over 1.8 pistons and liners onto 1.4 bottom end ? Or is there more to it ?

I have all these parts and I am doing head and cam work so don't want to just buy a 1.6 .

Will car run safe without remap to get it remapped hope that makes sense .

I understand I need to inform insurance company

Thanks for help .

'Heavily revised' MG5 destined for UK?

According to an article on AR online, MG's uk bosses were/ are planning on launching a heavily revised MG5 in the uk. It's feasibly possible as the model was launched in 2012, so a mid life facelift is to be expected in a year or so. All speculation on my part, as I only know from what I read in the article. Thoughts? Do you think MG should bring the 5 over? Thanks.

Hi everyone,
I'm on the lookout for a bellhousing to fit between a K-series and Ford Type 9 gearbox (long input shaft).
Caterham do not have any in stock and won't manufacture anymore unless there's a significant demand for them, and I'd rather not pay a huge amount of money for a new one.
Does anyone have such a bellhousing they'd like to sell?
Thanks

Please help - my Rover 25 locks/immobiliser/alarm have gone a bit doolally

Hello,

Please forgive me as I know there are already posts on this topic, but they all seem to use the LUCAS system, while I have the Pektron System.

I am also not very technical at all.

I have a Rover 25 Impression. Drove it from London to Bristol and back on the weekend so you would think the battery would be fully charged.
On Monday I went to drive the car, the plip unlock worked but the alarm started sounding immediately and the driver's side indicator light was flashing.
Eventually the alarm stopped, plip was not not working, the engine would not start.
I locked the doors manually.

Thought the battery might be low due to not charging or something, so removed the battery and charged it overnight.

Put the battery back in the car but still no joy, wouldn't start, luckily no alarm sounding but there was a steady 'ticking' noise coming from under the bonnet.

Called Green Flag as we have Home Start and thought they might be able to fix it and save me a trip to the garage.

Plip unlock would not work on either fob, but he was able to unlock manually (no alarm sound). Engine would not start.

He attached his mobile battery pack with jump leads to the battery I had charged overnight and tried starting using the key. Engine tried to get going but would not start. Tried a couple of times but no joy.

Tried locking/unlocking on plip from within the car but car did not lock/unlock.

Tried starting again and engine came to life and stayed running! Hurrah!

Unplugged battery pack. Was able to start car. Hurrah!

Ticking noise from beneath the bonnet still happening for about 15 minutes but eventually stopped after starting the engine again.

However. Neither plip is working so door must be manually locked/unlocked. Also, the red light on the dashboard that usually flashes when the car is locked is not flashing.

I am GUESSING that perhaps something is wrong with the immobiliser or fobs?

I know my EKA code, and gave that a go, turning it in the lock the required number of times, then waiting 5 minutes and starting the car... but the fobs still don't work. I think this reset may only work for the LUCAS fobs?

Any help or advice would be gratefully received. As I said, I'm not very technical at all, and while it is not real hardship to use the keys and manually unlock, I'd rather it worked properly with the alarm and immobiliser and I'm in London and I do worry about my little car parked on the road

Thank you in advance.

hey all a couple of months ago i replaced a front coil spring on my ZS TD and after removing most of the front suspension to do it i decided to have the alignment done afterwards for good measure ... since then the handling has become terrible my old megane diesel was much better.. To describe it i think dull is the word loads of understeer and impossible to induce any kind of oversteer lift off or otherwise. Now after owning a ZR years ago i know what the Z cars should be capable of or am i expecting too much with it being a heavy diesel up front..does anybody know what the alignment settings should be? I also suspect they may have set it to either a rover 45 settings (are they different?) or guessed what it should be.. gonna take it back but could do with some hard evidence of the correct settings before hand

These are the coil packs I have found (http://ift.tt/2bzmec3) but not sure whether or not they are going to fit on plus the fact that two are coil packs and two are HT leads im not sure where to get the 2 leads from.

Run flats for ZS?

Following an unrepairable puncture to a good Michelin on the front nearside, I did look to replace it with a matching Firestone that is fitted on the front offside (like it when we bought the car). The Firestone is a run flat and I've been advised that the ZS should not be run on run flats, so looks like I'll need to get two new tyres

Firstly, what is the reason a ZS shouldn't be on run flats and secondly, if I have to get two new tyres, is there a decent budget tyre I could get for both fronts?

All coolant dropped

Did a full brake service on my low mileage F. I've put 2.3k on it since I bought it so thought it was time to spend a bit of time on the little bits.

I bought some stainless steel coolant pipes that haven't come yet, but sods law that a problem would arise before I did anything!

I heard a hissing noise in my right ear, and stopped a maximum of 30 seconds after. Coolant was still leaking everywhere when I stopped, so hopefully no lasting damage to the block, and I turned the engine off myself (it didn't cease).

I've looked, relatively briefly, at the condition of the hoses and none stand out as a likely cause of this.

I've checked for any sign of H.G. failure and the oil is at the right level, and the right colour, so I am ruling this out.

I haven't checked the waterpump, but would assume if this had failed it would have caused a bigger timing belt problem.

Can anyone suggest where to start, and how to look for leaks?

RTI/Finance GAP Cover from Chris Knott

Hi,

As well as offering members competitive car insurance, Chris Knott provides a couple of other products aimed at helping car enthusiasts like you to get back on the road quickly following an accident.

One such product is our RTI/Finance GAP Insurance - we call it 'Combination GAP'. This pays the difference between your car's purchase price and your insurer's payout following a total loss/write-off. If you've got the car on finance and there's a greater amount owing, the policy pays this higher amount instead. Great news!

Chris Knott GAP is available on all makes and models so it doesn't even have to be your club/forum car that you're arranging cover for.

The premium is based on the original invoice or finance amount for the vehicle and we have heard that car dealers, for example, want £399 or more for 3 years' cover on a £24,995 car.

Chris Knott's price for this same cover is just £120.00 and vehicles upto £15k are covered for an even cheaper £85.00.

Why not ask us for a quote if you're buying a new 66 plate car or even a slightly older model (cover can be arranged for any car under 8 years old with less than 80,000 miles on the clock).

This forum's dedicated link to quote and buy online is:

Dedicated GAP Quote & Buy link

or you can call us on 0800 917 2274 to speak to one of our friendly team members about this valuable protection.

best,
Nick

It's often weeks or months after picking up a car that you notice 'minor' things not working.

I got my 13K LE500 in June, but only noticed the other day that the full beam selector does not work. I can do the full beam flash, but cannot get full beam (blue light on dash) to stay on as the stalk selector does not seem to lock into place.

Anyone else had this issue? And how can it be fixed?

Also the screen wash is not working...no sound of a motor at all when the stalk is pulled...though the wipers go through their wash sequence to a dry screen.

Head gasket issues

Hi

Just changed the head gasket on 04 1.4 streetwise and everything went to plan and used mutli layer gasket and new bolts.

But i've just noticed a leak from right hand side of engine.

I borrowed the torch racket from mate and am wondering if it was faulty?

Can i use another and re tighten the bolts without having to take every thing else off ? Or will i need to start again ?

Thanks in advance

Battery Size

Afternoon all

The battery on my track-car has finally given up the ghost

I was having a look online and the 1.4's are recommended a 063 battery size, and the 1.8's a 075 size
I was wondering what the difference between the engine sizes requires a different battery.

I have a 1.4 shell with a VVC engine.

The cost difference isnt that much of a concern for me (but its £32 cheaper) but the 063 is a good few KG lighter and smaller dimensions.
My car doesnt have Air con, ABS, or an SRS system.

The car does spend a few weeks in a row without a good run out, and the 075 has bigger reserve capacity so thats something I am considering, but simply is the 1.4 battery alright to use on a VVC?

Remove window cheater with window up - is it possible?

Guys, I've thought about replacing my cheaters recently - mainly due to an electric mirror upgrade and I want to get rid of the unsightly 'hole' left on the inside where the manual arm to operate non-electric mirrors goes through.

Thing is, I know about the removal guides and how to remove them under normal circumstances, but how does one go about removing them from a car in the scrappie that has its windows up and no power to lower them to allow the bottom cheater to be pulled through the window channel ?????

Is there a way to manually lower the window or even remove the glass with it being stuck in the 'up / closed' position?

Thanks
Ste.

Rover 25 Streetwise few problems

Hi, i have a Rover 25 streetwise 04 plate.

First is SRS light. It's been on for a couple of months now, tried fixing it from under the seats, no luck, don't know how to get to the rotary coupler, don't even know where it is or what it is.

Second is a wiring problem When I have the lights on, the windscreen wipers on intermittent (wipe-pause-wipe), the signal for turning goes on (only the one on the right) and the boot tries opening by itself. I can hear it. The boot only opens from the remote btw.

Third problem is I cannot seem to find anywhere the rubber bush and the plastic bit from the gear stick. Mine can be pulled off from the inside, does not have a screw or anything. Tried at the scrap yard but no luck. All other rover 25's and streetwise have a different gearbox

Fitting a refurbished Witter "Stowbar" to my ZT-T 1.8t

Refurbished after removal from a 75 in a local scrap yard. My saloon MG ZT 1.8t came with the Witter Stowbar frame already fitted behind the bumper but without the detachable Stowbar and locking device itself. Careful searching ebay daily turned up the missing items at £15 collection from Birmingham. Picked up by combining the trip with dropping off eight ZT GRIDspoke alloy wheels for Powder Coating refurbishing.

So set about fitting the refurbished frame behind the ZT-T's rear bumper. Fiddling rather than difficult job. By the way, it helps enormously to give all the fasteners a good soaking in Penetrating fluid, particularly the two self-tappers securing the bottom of the Bumper to the wheel arch.

This shot shows work in progress preparing a template to cut out the recess in the rear bumper.

The attached images show how the work progressed.

"Hi" from New Zealand.

Hi.

I'm from New Zealand, have recently bought an MGF and am new to the forum. I hope to understand how to minimise the likelihood of developing HGF and, if it occurs, avoid engine damage. So far a thicker radiator having fans with more blades, a PRT and an engine oil cooler seem like the best enhancements to reduce the likelihood of developing HGF and a water level sensor the best to avoid engine damage. I'd like to make the changes myself, so need to know a lot of the detail.

Thanks.

I found the leak!!!!

At last after two winters (possibly more) of having a leaky passenger footwell I have today found the problem.

I pulled the wing off again and decided to start from the bottom and work my way up with the garden hose. It looks like I missed a seam that was behind the outer skin of the wheel arch which can be accessed from the small 2p sized hole.

The issue I have is I can't physically get to the seam in order to repair it. Any ideas on how I can access it? I don't really want to make the hose bigger and I am unsure whether coating the sod in cavity wax will work.

Here are some better shots of the other side (well as best I could)

What have you done to your MGF MGTF today? (Second Part)

Today have got to remove the failed front pipe.. Dammned thing has broken in the flexi. The outer mesh is fine it is the inner corrogated bit that has failed and this pipe was new in January.

This is the second one to fail like this .............................. first one was the replacemnt on Blue and now the one on the 75th has failed. Obviously cheaply made and the supplier wants it back to inspect as I made a complaint.. of course I have to pay for everything and will not have an exhaust while ths is being done but that does not seem to bother them one little bit.

Anyone have a suggestion where to get a decent 4 bolt flange front pipe that won't fall apart in a ew thousand miles?

Type of paint used in Rover 216?

Hi:
I want to add some clear coat in some places where it started to come off.

I bought this "Rust-Oleum Automotive Acrylic Lacquer Spray, Clear Gloss"

but now i'm wondering if it is the apropiate for this cars.

Is the Rover 216 Enamel Paint or Acrylic Lacquer Auto Paint?

see here for some explanation

There is a warning in the can that says: "Do not use Rust-Oleum Acrylic Lacquer Clear over existing air-dried enamel paints."

So, what type of paint is used in Rover 216 cars?. Mine is from 1998, CAQ (Nightfire Red 2)

thanks

MG Motor has accepted 7 students onto its acclaimed Automotive Engineering programme

Iconic British automotive brand, MG Motor UK, has accepted seven new students onto its acclaimed Automotive Engineering Internship programme for 2016/17. Open to all undergraduates taking relevant degrees within the engineering field, the initiative demonstrates the carmaker’s ongoing commitment to developing young talent.

The students, all from Bath or Oxford Brookes Universities, will spend the next year working at the SAIC Motor Technical Centre (SMTC), which is based at MG’s Longbridge site in Birmingham. Employing more than 250 qualified engineers, the SMTC delivers product engineering and design activity for MG Motor’s global operations, as well as providing automotive engineering services to other companies within the SAIC group.

Steve Jones, HR manager at the SMTC, said: “We’re incredibly privileged at the Longbridge site to operate as the global centre of excellence for design and engineering within the SAIC group. Manufacturing more than 5.6 million vehicles per year, our global business provides a massive opportunity for aspiring UK engineers, who are designing vehicles right here in Birmingham that are made and sold throughout the world.”

September 2016 marks the fourth intake of engineering interns to the annual programme. Each student is appointed a mentor from within the SAIC engineering team and spends the next 12 months working within a specific automotive engineering discipline.

Commenting on the continued development at the Longbridge site, Matthew Cheyne, head of sales and marketing at MG Motor, commented: “We’re proud to be attracting this calibre of graduates to the company. It shows that the future for MG and our product line-up is strong and growing in step with our sales and dealer network. We’re an evolving company and we need to continually look at what ideas and designs the new breed of designers and engineers can bring to the brand.”

The programme provides vital real-world engineering exposure alongside team building and classroom based training. Throughout their placement, interns will be immersed in all areas of the SMTC business, including design, advanced engineering, vehicle integration, body structure, powertrain applications, engine and chassis development.

Mk.2 Master cylinder trouble

Hi all,

I'm having a bit of trouble with the non-servoed brake master cylinder on my '89 Metro Mk.2 (1275). It's completely bunched, basically and needs to be replaced (have rebuilt it twice to no avail and have given up and taken it to a mechanic). The problem is, they're difficult to find in Ireland and especially at a reasonable price. I'd be looking at about €125 for a new one and Metros are so rare here that I can't find bits in a scrapper.

Naturally enough, I looked to Ebay and though I found a few promising secondhand ones, I wasn't sure if they'd be suitable for the car. They look reasonably sound though they seem to be missing that attachment to the side of my current master cylinder (it's a small little cylindrical attachment, about an inch and a half long- something to do with brake bias, I think). Would this one be suitable, do you think? Is that brake bias cylinder very important?
Austin metro master cylinder

Alternatively, given that it's an '89, would a master cylinder for a later Metro (1990 onwards) also fit?

Are there any Mini ones that would also work?

Scu/ Bcu relays

I replaced my Scu relays for the horn and drivers side window a few years ago (2013) for the pektron system. Post Aug. 2003.

The drivers window has stopped working again. I can hear the relay when I press the switch to make the window go up, but not hear the relay when I push the switch to go down.
Is there anything else, other than the relay on the scu board I can check?

Has anyone fitted relay holders or know of such a thing that would work with the 9 pin relays. It would be a lot easier to replace relays with a holder if this is going to be a regular thing every few years.
Cheers B

MGF Trophy interior

I've just bought a blue Trophy 160 that's done 82,000 miles and in need of TLC inside and out. Inside it's got the usual seat wear, the steering wheel blue and black leather are both worn and the blue door trims are chipped. I'm new to the forums and the whole world of restoration so have loads of questions.
  1. Any ideas on where I can get good condition replacement trim?
  2. I've seen a pair of cheap Trophy seats and am considering getting these refurbished - anyone got any experience of that?
  3. Does anyone know if the passenger seat can be swapped for the drivers - can the cushions be removed from the frames and swapped over?
  4. Does anyone know if those blue door trims can be repainted?
  5. I'd like to keep the interior as close to the original as possible, but an alternative to the seats would be to go for leather - does anyone know if the Trophy was available with a leather seat option?

I appreciate that's quite a lot of questions from a new-starter - any help and advice gratefully received, thanks!

Electrical radio gremlins

I've had a few issues with my 600. I melted some wiring popped a fuse and I thought I'd replaced it all to get everything working.

However my electrical aerial is no longer going up and down and my CD player is having none of it. The CD player is actually a rover 800 one (R960 radio and DC082 changer). I was hoping the two were linked to some fuse I'd not yet found.

Any ideas on what to check before I rip out the wiring or fit another stereo!

Hello from Berkshire

Hi

I have the possibility of picking up a MGTF that has two problems. The first is that it idles on 1,500 to 2000 rpm. Having read the forum this seems a common(ish) problem and it is likely to be the throttle body, or the Idle (thingy) valve.

The other issue is the fan doesn't work. This is perhaps more problematic and hard to get to?

My first challenge is to get the car from Chislehurst in Kent to Berkshire. I need to insure it, jump start it and hope I can drive it the 60 miles without it overheating etc.

Alternatively I need to trailer/transport it.

Any views, comments or thoughts would be very welcome.

Thanks

So my exhaust is very rusty and looks a bit ****.
Obviously the answer is to replace it, but what options do i have.

I'm finding it really hard to find an aftermarket 'direct fit' back box.
Are there even any available. I want one with a bit more noise but nothing over the top. How much would one cost from Janspeed and how do I go about getting one?

So it's a MK2 Hatch 1.8 Petrol, if it makes any difference (if sure it does)

Anyone seen one of these speedo trims before?

I found it lying about in a donor car I was working on in a scrapyard yesterday and thought it looked quite nice. I don't know if it's an aftermarket bit of trim or if it was standard on some cars. It was taken from a W reg F........

Not sure if I will use it or not yet, mainly as once you've started with adding trim, it kind of escalates to other things such as heater knobs, and other bits of 'bling'...........still, for £3 I thought I'd have it.....

I also came away with a few other bits and bobs - wiring loom for electric windows (as some of you might have read) and a nice clean coolant expansion tank as mine's looking a bit grubby even after I've cleaned it out.

£13 for the lot.....I must go the the scrappie more often....trouble is, it's addictive!

BCU goes crazy

Hi guys,

It s really annoying what s happening to me right now, i ll try to explain with all details. Starting some weeks ago, after it s raining my car goes crazy. What i noticed first, the wipers start work even if i m out of the car and the car is locked. The wipers stop just when i turn the 2nd position of the key. First i thought it s the rain sensor failure but past days i noticed even the interior lights turning on and off many times alone, the drivers windows switch not working anymore, but the windows are working if you use the other switches. Now i have to disconnect the battery all the time and after i reconnect it and turn the ignition on, one of the windows randomly goes down. Moreover i cant lock the car anymore through buttons of the key, the car do the horn noise as a door is opened. And if i can succed closing it like that, in some minutes the alarm will start alone and will not stop even if i turn the ignition on. It happened two times for me until now and everytime after some days after the rain, if it s hot outside the car work as before, without any problem. All the time i checked the ECU that is placed under the windscreen and notime it wasnt water there. Did anyone faced with such a problem ? Thank you a lot for your answers.

Sincerly,
Andrei.

Temp Gauge

The ECU (& therefore Torque) uses a separate temperature sensor than that used for the gauge. The 2 sensors are both on the coolant outlet elbow behind the alternator - I can't remember which is which but disconnecting one of them temporarily will tell you.

The fault could be the gauge sensor, the wiring, or the gauge. On a 25 I would say the engine bay wiring is probably most likely - but the gauge sensor is easily & not too expensively changed so could readily be eliminated as a problem. The choice of how to proceed is yours..........

Head up display unit - can it work with our cars?

Red faceHead up display unit - can it work with our cars?

I have a MG ZT 190+ from 2003 as well as a Rover 75 saloon from 2001, and both have ports under the steering column that look like OBD II ones.
I have seen head up display units for sale - 3 and 5 inch units - and something like this would be very useful for night time driving. It shows speed mostly on your screen as a projection. But it needs to connect to a OBD II port.
Will this work with the MG ZT and Rover 75?
I have heard scare stories of what happens if you connect a OBD connector to the port on MGs and Rovers - and would rather not find my car in a zillion pieces if I connect up a HUD to that port. So, what do you reckon? Will it kill the car to try? Might it work? If so it would really be a useful additional function.

Loud knocking coming from the front after lowering

This one has got me completely.

I fitted a set of Apex lowering springs to my car last week. Immediately on the test drive it was apparent there was a knocking from the NS front. Took NS front leg off again, stripped it down, and checked everything was correct and put it back together again and refitted it back to the car.

I came to the conclusion it was probably the anti roll bar links. Swapped these over this evening for a set of new ones, knocking is still there although not as pronounced, but still clearly evident and still just as annoying.

The strange thing is you can pound it down a bumpy road and its silent, go over one small bump and you get a loud knock. I've had the car up and down on the jack and i've checked everything and nothing seems evident. I cant find any play in anything and the springs are completely under compression and sitting where it should when the car is jacked up so i know the spring isn't moving.

Before i go down the road of replacing all the lower arms and also the tie bar bushes (Have a set of orange polybush ones to go on) is there anything i may have missed?

MGF electric /engine problem

Hello guys! I just took my F to ride again and now i have couple problems. First thing is; all the lights are flashing constantly (and also heater power is varying similar to lights). Tried to get videos to get the point, attached below. Now where could this come from? I have checked battery's connection and earth point, battery is brand new. Where should i look from problem?

Another problem is that idle revs are wondering, as you can see from second video. Also car seems to be running not perfect. Car has had headgasket changed in 2011 and has done probably 10 000km after that. Also same time was changed lots of other parts. car has green twister xl filter fitted with hose bypassing the original resonator box. Tried to do the idle air control valve reset - no change.

Hello,

Just had word from the mechanic that - surprise surprise - the head gasket has gone on my beloved Rover 45.

It's a bog standard 2000 1.4l Rover 45.

Can I just buy and fit another engine?

Can I upgrade it to a 1.8l engine without much bother?

Can anyone here sell me the engine and do the work? I know the car isn't worth much but it's in great nick and I love her!

Thanks,

Sam

I very much doubt that you will be able to siphon any fuel out at all - the bends in the filler neck will make it impossible to get a siphon pipe to drop down into the tank.

The best course of action would be to part the main underfloor fuel feed line (there is a connector at the rear of the passenger floorpan, just forward of the tank) and then turn the ignition switch so that the fuel pump operates - you just need the disconnected fuel pipe pointing into a suitable receptacle/fuel can (the pump will only operate for a few seconds, so you have to keep repeating the process, but it is surprising how much fuel will come out each time - it doesn't take all that many repeats to fill a 10 litre can).

I have changed the O-ring and tightened and retightened , put the old O-ring up and cleaned and tightened that one, its very tight but it keeps leaking and this is before its been bled and under pressure !

So I was wondering could it be leaking from the seam between the metal pipe and the sleeve of the union as pictured ( hope it clear enough)

Any advice appreciated before I give up £70 to Rimmers to replace the pipe.
