This one, to be precise

MG Zt-T 2.0 115 CDTi + 5dr

He has a Mk4 Mondeo, but it just hasn't worked out for him the way he hoped (he hates the violence of the brakes in particular). It's partly my fault he's looking at one now, (well me and mom to be honest), although he has a couple of reservations:

1. How hard is the suspension compared to other cars?

2. How economical is it?

3. Is the performance any good?

He's not worried about reliability as much, since it's a BMW lump and there's no cam belt to change.

SAIC Motor Technical Centre has announced the appointment of Kestor Sleeman.

SAIC Motor Technical Centre has announced the appointment of Kestor Sleeman.

SAIC Motor Technical Centre (SMTC UK), the sister company to MG Motor and based at the UK headquarters in Longbridge, Birmingham, has announced the appointment of Kestor Sleeman to the role of Powertrain Electronic Control (PTEC) as a graduate engineer.

A recent University of Birmingham graduate, Kester previously undertook a year-long internship programme at SMTC UK, as part of his undergraduate degree programme, Kester was able to take on real engineering tasks and issues to develop his knowledge and experience. The company also provided specialised automotive training programmes to enhance his skills along with the completion of an exciting project that the intern team were able to project manage, engineer and develop into an actual running vehicle.

Taking up his full-time position later this month, Kester’s main area of responsibility will be diagnostics and electrical integration, as well as helping to test and prove-out brand new software.

Phil Newman, Senior Manager of Powertrain Integration at SMTC UK, commented: “Inspiring and attracting the next generation of automotive professionals is a key responsibility for us here at SMTC UK. As such, we work closely with leading colleges and universities from across the country, offering a number of internship and graduate schemes.

“A highly talented graduate engineer with considerable potential for the future, we’re delighted to announce Kestor’s appointment within the Powertrain Department. After undertaking our 12-month internship programme, Kestor demonstrated his aptitude, commitment and creative flair – which led to us offering a full-time role at the SMTC following his graduation from Birmingham University.”

As a global engineering and design technical centre for SAIC Motor Corporation Limited – the parent company of MG Motor, SMTC employs more than 300 people and is responsible for key phases of the engineering, research, design and development programmes for all new SAIC products worldwide.

Kester added: “Joining such an integral division is a real privilege. The team is incredibly talented and delivers world-leading projects for the vehicles of tomorrow. Over the coming months, I look forward to further developing my skills within the business and becoming an integral part of the powertrain department.”

Announcing the appointment of Kestor Sleeman is the latest in a long line of successes for the SMTC. Alongside accepting seven new students onto its Automotive Engineering Internship programme last month (August), the centre has recently completed an expansion project at its electrical component testing facilities to increase pre-production testing capabilities and efficiencies.

S/wheel now matching

Been slacking lately as I haven't done anything to the ZED for ages but health as held me back if I'm honest. One job that needed doing and has bugged me for ages is finally done. The s/wheel is no longer X power grey and matches the silver sparkle that I did console, dash trim and door caps.
I know it won't be to everyone's taste but I like it so I suppose that's all that counts as its in my car lol

I went on the site for a laugh, no supprise that they valued the daughters ZS at £99
I would rarther leave it sit where it has for the last month lol. I have put in up on for sale section one last time but don't hold out much hope on it selling as most people on here either want parts off it or try and buy it for peanuts to break themselves.
I think our cars have hit that point where they aren't worth selling, so just run them till they die I say. We went through the same on the rover 800 forum, posts get less and parts don't sell etc and so on.
The ZS will most likely got to the rear of my house in a week or two ready to break after Christmas or when I feel like which is a shame but that's the position we are at I think, have noticed the last few on sale section have not shifted. Suppose it will give me something to do next year.

Hi everyone went to start my car this morning but just wouldn't start. All seemed ok with car before this morning. I'm put a link to a video on YouTube of what it sounds like trying to start. Also just noticed the battery light on dashboard is flashing?. I've plugged a reader in and it's showing no fault codes. Anyone no why this is happening please.

Here's link to sound.

Mk2 MGZS120 with factory fitted 180 kit

The daughters ZS is up for sale as she has new Nissan SUV ( don't ask me lol ) she needed a 7 seater due to birth of her new baby boy so the ZS has been sat for a month, if it doesn't sell I will store it out the rear of my house and strip it for parts after Christmas.
It's an 05plate on 94 thousand miles and has been in the family for 6 years, in that time it's never lets us down only needing tyres, brakes, oil and filters apart from trailing arm bushes last year and front lower arms the year before so not bad really. Always starts first time everytime drives well and stops as it should.
It's firefrost red with original paint and panels no accident damage or welding anywhere, it's a good solid and straight example. Factory fitted 180 body kit which makes a big difference from standard ZS also has the 11 spoke alloys which are much sort after. Just had oil and genuine filter and benefits from a cat back s/steel longlife system with lifetime guarantee and paper work. Everything on the car works ie ice cold air con with digital climate control, front and rear electric windows, electric and heated mirrors, heated front seats and rear parking sensors.
Interior is Monaco half leather (not pvc as used on the matrix seats which always split ) drivers bolster is excellent which is unusual for one of these nowadays. Interior also has Honda front light and a Renault rear interior light both with map lights a nice upgrade.
Two recent front tyres fitted with receipt, old mots included along with original owners hand book, radio code card with key code and also Mcgaurd code card for locking wheel nuts , obviously one locking key comes with car.
Recent mot beginning of August was straight through no advisories as usual so 10 months left on current mot. It had the head gasket done in 2009 before we purchased it and there is a receipt in there for £500.
It's up for £750 Ono if anyone is interested.

New SCU Pektron

Hello.
Im not from Great Britain, and i have rover streetwise 2004, which is very rare car in our place. So, sorry for my English, please.
As i said some times ago my SCU Pektron doesnt work correctly.
Central locking doesnt work for open.
I`ve changed pektron relays and TPIC but it still doesnt work
So i`ve tried to find new ECU kit from ebay with fobs and SCU, but...
I know that MG3SW is a chineese variant of rover streetwise.
I`ve found new SCU Pektron module at taobao site -
http://ift.tt/2cQpaif

It looks same as my own SCU. Part number same. And its new!
Seller tells that its complitely new and clear SCU.
But what does it mean? O_o
If I just replace my device with this new SCU, will it work without programming key fobs and ECU?
Same question about K14 engine
http://ift.tt/2cQoc5C

Is it same engine that deployed in my rover streetwise 1.4 76Kw?
Thanks for answers.

Hi all,
I've just managed to get myself into the situation where my MGF's bonnet is shut and pulling the release lever in the boot is not achieving anything (cable seems tight, but the latch just is not moving). Thanks, Jim

Future MG ideas

I'm new here-here's my tuppence worth of what I think MG should be doing next.
1. Design cool cars-already done with the Icon concept and 5 concept. Stunning looking cars.
2. Make new concepts a reality-With the great reception these car designs recieved it really is a backward decision not to bring them out. Even a very similar model.
3. Bring the GT out-It looks like a facelifted 6. Change the awful arse on it though. So near a good GT design.
4. Bring some assembly back here in the future by giving us a car (any of the above) the public would buy in droves. SAIC can't bang on enough about the British link to MG with Union flags etc. all over adverts and promotions. It is becoming irritating, more so now assembly has stopped altogether here. To get public trust in the UK build a car here when volumes allow. If MG are only designing cars here then that is fine to an extent but without manufacturing any cars it's a problem. Unless the designs come out looking so great like the concepts and they push the designed in Britain angle. Then I don't think the public would mind as much.
5. Make a sports retro classic. If it ever comes that should be the car that's built here. That would heal the brand big time.
Sometimes you just wish you could have input to MG. Dream dream.
6. When the next BTTC car comes along sell a version that actually looks a lot like it. Body kit. Large wheels. Tuned engine.
7. Don't make the new small crossover look like every other mundane copy. Seeing the latest spy shots it looks naff. It should look like the Icon.
8. Bring out another GS which looks even more like the concept GS. (Facelift).
There.

MG ZT Harman/Kardon radio needs a code

Hi,
i'm from Poland, so dont be angry cause of my language.

2 weeks ago i bought a MG ZT 190 2.5V6 from 2001year. I have inside a Harman/Kardon sound system with a Navi,TV, and a alpine display in the "front desk!?". I thought that code is in radio module, i read a content from a 24C16 EEPROM in BMW BUSINESS RDS: philips 22 dc 785/23 E, which is located in boot. Codes from this EEPROM doesn't work on my car.

When i'm typing a code into a display, i have a message like "Turn your ignition key to position "0". I dont have any message like "code is right" or "wrong code". When i'm running the radio after it i have the same screen as the first time.. Nothing has changed

Can You help me?

Blind insurance valuation & settlement after prang........

Blind insurance valuation & settlement after prang........

Anyone ever heard of this???

Long story short (well, short-ish!).

My F was parked stationary in a car park and another vehicle reversed into my rear passenger quarter panel and bumper causing some paintwork damage mainly to the bumper along with some scuffs to the rear passenger wheel arch.

Fortunately, we were coming back to the car and caught the driver in the act as she was about to drive off. We shouted at her to stop and yelled "you've just reversed into my car!!" and she did. Not sure she actually felt it as she was driving a big Vauxhall Insignia and the impact speed must have been minimal.

Anyway, we exchanged details and I'd been waiting to hear from her insurance company for a few days, finally got a call yesterday with an offer of resolution which I was not really familiar with. I'll explain:

So, the girl comes on the phone....tells me that they can offer me what they termed as a "blind valuation and settlement" - the upshot of which meant they would put a blind value on my car, take off the scrap value and send me a cheque for the difference and I keep and repair the car myself.

At first, I was sceptical of this being a Category D insurance write off, but after a long conversation with the insurance company, they assured me that there would be no detriment to my car and nothing recorded to indicate anything remotely to do with insurance write off.

She promised to call me back Today with their "blind valuation" figures and she did so. I was expecting a really measly figure, given that my car is a base 1.6 2001 Y plate F, so I was prepared to argue over condition etc etc.

As it worked out thus far, the "blind" figure they put on her was £1,545. She then went on to say that as I'd be keeping the car, they'd have to take off their "scrap value" figure which was £315 - which I thought was a bit steep.

The upshot of it all - as I gather - is that I get to keep the car, it is NOT classified as any kind of insurance write off and the insurers send me a cheque for £1,230.......

I've got them to confirm via email that insurance write off is NOT happening and I have saved that just in case. She said that it did not matter if the cost of the repair was less than this figure and if it was, I simply keep the extra money if it is cheaper to repair - no need to pay it back.

To be honest, I was kind of gob smacked - the cost of the repair is no where near that kind of money, so in a manner of speaking, I'm on to a right winner.

Just wondered if anyone else had heard of this kind of insurance settlement?

1st 3rd and 5th ok - 2nd 4th and rev not so much

I think my gear linkage cables are stretching. I can select 1st, 3rd and 5th ok, but not 2nd, 4th or reverse.

The gear stick kind of goes into 2nd, but I only get a sound of gears not quite meshing.

I've been quoted 4 hours to do the job and about £140 for each cable, which all comes out at about £600 inc vat

This is not much different to the value of the car.

So, a few questions:

o is 4 hours a reasonable estimate for a mechanic who has doen the job before?

o Is it worth considering getting used cables?

o If the cables are being changed, what else should I consider doing at the same time?

Thanks,

Mike

Odd smell in header tank

Hi all,
My 45 1.6 is still running perfectly 4 years after head gasket change, but my son-in-law's identical car has started losing coolant at 78,000. There are no visible leaks from the usual places. In the header tank I found a fair amount of what looks like engine oil. This is liquid oil and hasn't emulsified with the coolant. The car uses very little oil between changes and is still just below the full mark. Here's where it gets odd. Dipping a finger in and smelling it (ooh missus) reveals a strong distinctive reek of hypoid gear oil, which is impossible. That rotten fish smell is hard to miss. My question is whether anyone else has ever had this slightly weird situation, as I'm baffled by it. The lad doesn't posess any gear oil, so he hasn't had a brainstorm and put that in.

Cheers,
Stu

Aerial to radio in my 75

Hi guys. I've already posted this in the radio section of the forum, and I haven't had a response. So I thought I'd chuck it here to see if I have any more luck.

All the current radio tuner/sat nav/ cd changer is in the boot at the moment, and my radio has finally kicked the bucket. if i was to install a new radio into my 75, i am guessing that i would need to run a new aerial cable from the back window, to the new head unit. As the aerial goes to the tuner in the boot at the moment.

what cable and connectors would be best to do this??

Plans regarding a future Rover 75 2.5 V6

Good evening,

I will tell you a "short" story:

When i was young my dad bought a Rover 600, 2.0 Gasoline, Green exterior and beige cloth interior. I was mesmerized by that car. It was a big leap forward from the rusty old Dacia of the family(you know the "New Dacia Sandero" =)) .

Short time after buying the 600, the new 75 made its debut and i was standing for hours in front of the brochures admiring the 75.

Fast forward 20 years later:

Now i am 26 years old and after spending 3 years with a brand new Hyundai(ok soulless car) i want to move forward and buy a second hand car.

Mandatory requirements:

  • 2.4 -2.6 engine( tax bracket in our country);
  • gasoline(duuh);
  • Automatic transmission.
  • Pre facelift version(i like it more).
I want an auto because i will be using the car in town and i like the comfort provided by an auto. For the stick lovers: When i will be in the mood for stick, i will change gears in my Mazda Mx-5 until my hand will fall off.

Alternatives:
- BMW E91 325 i , a bit too expensive for what it offers;
- Alfa 156 2.5 Busso! The engine is the only thing that i love from that car.

Optional for Rover 75 :

  • British racing green( it could be repainted if not);
  • Cloth(reminds me of the old 600);
  • Estate( more beautiful than a sedan, even if the 75 sedan it's one of the few cars that is as gorgeous as the estate version).
The purchase will be made in ~2017-2018 when i will have money to afford it.

Questions:

-Is the 2.5 V6(pre-facelift) Euro 3? Because in my country the registration tax is 2k euro for Euro 3 and 1 k for Euro 2. I have seen somewhere that it may be Euro 2 but i doubt it.

- I know a handy mechanic no problem about that;
- I highly doubt that i will find the perfect combination(engine, auto, green, cloth beige interior and estate) but i am willing to give up the estate and cloth points if it's too hard to find.

From what you already guessed, i don't mind fuel consumption, stick shifter, performance etc. I just want a car which i love , driving her nice and now and then hearing the V6 simphony .

What you guys think about my plan?

MGF: Clutch after-bleed

Here I am with my request support.

So, my gear change was starting to be too horrible.
After doing all things I could (bell crank rose joints, gearbox oil change, stick shortening and gear selector tightening) I've decided to change the master/slave cylinders.

I've also bleed the clutch, not in the most professional way, but I believe succesfully.

The first 2 weeks the clutch was hard and absolutely a smooth change.
The third week the pedal felt more spongie, still operating decently.
Now, it seems to pedal feel have been stabilized, but gear change is worse than three weeks ago.

I was planning to re-bleed the clutch, and tight more master slave cylinders.
Any other idea?

Next plan is to have a full Mike Satur solution from manifold to backbox, since the MOT said my exhaust is probably due in max 6 months.

Constant low-pitched hum - but not every time I drive!

hi all,

I have a 2005 diesel Streetwise which I really like (previous few cars have been Citroens! ) but I have noticed that sometimes when I drive it there is a constant low-pitched hum that sounds like its coming from the top right of the engine bay (when sat in the driver seat) but cannot confirm when I get out of car and listen from the bonnet area...

Could someone tell me if they have experienced this and what was it?

also, as you look under the bonnet, what is the cylinder in the top left corner as you face the engine? was wondering if it could be this...

finally - does anyone know where I can get grommets/blanking plugs for the holes that are in the boot below the light units? Have had water creating a small pond around the spare wheel like so many other posts - may have cured this by tightening the light fittings...

many thanks

Cris

R25 Tyre Load/Speed Ratings

I can't get my head around why the tyre load and speed specs vary (randomly?) with the wheel size.

Specs from the R25 owner handbook:-
14" alloy is 86T/86H
15" alloy is 82H
16" alloy is 83V (45 prof), 87H (50 prof)
17" alloy is 84V

Why all the differences if the same vehicle could have any of those wheel sizes fitted?

Arrgh... THERMOSTAT housing!

Arrgh... THERMOSTAT housing!

Argh...! So I thought I would be clever and replace the metal pipes around the engine. My car has always leaked water but only when idling. So I bought SS pipes and New Thermostat and housing (NON PRT). When I had finally excavated all I got the old pipes out still in fairly good condition. Removing the thermostat revealed that it was fractured around the sealing ring on the engine side and completely separated around the ring. (Broken parts removed). Had fortunately purchased new. Finally got all together. What a sods opera (inlet manifold still in place). Refilled and bled and it is pouring water between the new pipes and thermostat. No room to adjust because everything bolts into place. Everything clean and fresh. I never thought to check the three bolts around the housing but it all looked good and ready to apply. Does anybody have any advice or experience? Can't face doing this again myself and don't want to put back old steel pipes. You have to be a limbo dancer with universal joints at elbows and wrists. What have I done wrong? Totally fed up. Impossible to see at dusk but by feeling water seems to come from the compression joint to pipes and is pouring out even without pressure. The rings were in place. Advice welcome

Wow thanks for sharing that find.

So sad seeing it is still such a forlorn factory after all this time. Think how many Land Rovers could have come down that line if LR had needed the capacity back in 2005...shame they didn't.

It is good the pics were captured before the St Modwen bulldozers move in for the final time.

R600 Sub-forum - ghostly!

This sub-forum has become fairly sad and quiet place! I guess it's a consequence of the fact that there are a diminishing number of 600's around and they are so reliable, so little to talk about. I think the only work I've done on mine during 2016 was spend a good few hours underneath it applying paint - and even that was a pre-emptive task. Of course last year, it needed epic work doing on it; both CV gaiters need replacing costing £15 or £16. I told it, "If you're going to start getting difficult, you are going!". It got the message .

'96 MGF Alternator not working

'96 MGF Alternator not working

Hi all!

I am having some trouble getting my '96 MGF back on the road after a HGF repair.
The problem strangely is not with the engine (the garage managed to fix that OK), but with the alternator.
The original one had a cracked casing so we decided to replace it instead of waiting for it to disintegrate on the Autobahn.
The engine/gear subframe was removed for the HG replacement.
But now the fun started:
The replacement alternator from Rimmer Bros: DOA (?) No generator light when switching ignition on, no battery charge.
A refurbished part from a German company came with the wrong (past '01) connectors but was made to work, well for a day or so, then while driving I got this sequence:
Generator light on for 30 sec, then off, then after some time ABS light on, then power steering light on with steering getting stiff (not bad BTW, who needs power steering for such a small car?) and then (after an additonal 30 km) engine stuttering and I organized a pick-up.... Battery voltage was down to below 9V.
Ignition on with engine off: No generator light, hence most likly no ground path (again).
I checked all ground connections I could find. The one in the engine bay looked good. The one for the battery under the front bonnet, too.
Any ideas where else I could check? The car currently is at the garage where they agreed to fix their repair, but any hints might ease their work and reduce my costs...

Any comments appreciated,
regards,
Stefan

96 MGF - Greetings from Germany

Hi all!

Will keep this short as my experiences are in no way special. Bought an '96 MGF (mostly, some parts from '98, some from '01) dirt cheap and had maximum fun driving it.
Had an HGF, had troubles finding a garage to fix it at a halfway decent price, now getting the car back on road before the summer is done.
It is an imported RHD car and I absolutely love driving it. It is pretty well kept for its age but I will have to do some work on it during the winter.

Trying to use this forum to answer several questions; as I said, nothing special, isn't that why we all are here?

Greetings,
Stefan

Need a photo of a small part...

Need a photo of a small part...

Hi,

Today i disassembled the interior light to give a good cleanup in the electric contacts but unfortunately as soon as i unfastened the last of the 3 small screws, a small piece jumped to an unknown place. It´s dark and i can´t find it.

I have an idea what kind of piece it is because i already disassembled it before but i´m not sure. It´s that small piece that sticks in the switch (i guess in a spring) to give the feeling when switching between one of the 3 possible positions. Now the switch works but it´s kind of "free".

Tomorrow i will have a new look to see if i can find it but it would be easier if someone could post a photo of that small piece so i could know what i´m looking for.

Thanks a lot.

Now there's a thing...

Now there's a thing...

My 03 TF has lost water every since I bought it in 2017 at 31.000.
Drive hard all day on motorways and it loses nothing, sit in traffic at Blackwall Tunnel for 45 minutes and the tank will be empty. It blew the head gasket at 34.000.
Russel sorted and pressure tested OK.
Now on 70.000 but check coolant frequently.
Did the underfloor pipes 7 years ago.
2 waterpumps and cambelts in that time.
Always look closely at MOT and can find nothing.
It burst a hose (the complex F shaped one) recently not far from home.
I got back by pouring loads of water in.
So now I have judiciously replaced numerous original hoses as a precaution.
Treated myself to some SS engine pipes.
What a nightmare but it is possible with the Inlet manifold still in place.
Replace elbow joints with universal joints in your arms and get ready for much limbo dancing.
Anyway I have got the old pipes off and new pipes are now roughly in position but other commitments prevent completion today. At least I am past half way mark.
Quite disappointed when I took the old steel pipes off they look VGC.
"If it's not broken" and all that...
Until I found this.
Fortunately I decided in advance to buy a new Thermostat and housing.
The whole end of the thermostat has fracture away leaving the ring loose.
Hopefully this is the end of my problems

CoolTrophy blue MGTF with X-power decal photos?

I have purchased a Trophy blue MGTF 160 to mainly do track days and I am looking at giving it a bit more of a "race car" look with some X-power decals etc. Does anyone have any images of any MGTF's that have decals/stickers fitted, and preferably Trophy blue ones as I have trawled the internet and failed to find any at all(except a baby blue one on an Ebay sellers sight that I really don't like.). The only images I can find are of MG-ZR's and ZT's.
Hopefully someone can help.

Almost 200 Car fans gathered at the WH Brand MG dealership in Lincolnshire

Almost 200 automotive aficionados gathered at the WH Brand MG dealership in Lincolnshire last weekend (18 September), to showcase their prized vehicles from the past and present.

The event, which was organised to raise money for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, saw a whole host of MG cars displayed – from classics and customs, to kit builds and brand new models.

In addition to hosting the exhibition, the dealership organised a number of stalls, stands and games, while visitors were also able to test drive MG’s latest models – the all-new MG GS SUV and MG3 supermini. A collection for the Air Ambulance was taken throughout the day, raising money for a hugely worthwhile cause.

Adam Brand, sales manager at WH Brand, commented: “We were delighted to welcome so many MG fans to the dealership last weekend for our enthusiast event. It was a brilliant day that showcased pristine examples of British engineering through the ages.

“We’d like to thank the individuals and car clubs from across the region who helped make the day run so smoothly and hope to build on the its success next year with an even bigger and better event.”

Matthew Cheyne, Head of Sales and Marketing at MG Motor UK, added: “WH Brand’s event was an excellent initiative – bringing together the local community and raising money for a great charity alongside. With MGs, both old and new, on display throughout the day, the event was certainly a must see for enthusiasts!”

Replacement rear bumper and parking sensors

I was rear-ended last night causing a large split in my rear bumper and the parking sensor now just makes a long (5sec?) continual beep when reverse is engaged.

What's the chances of me finding a new replacement Rover 45 bumper, and where should look? Does any stock still exist?

I've looked for second hand ones on eBay but ones in my colour are pretty scarce at the moment.

Is the reverse sensor just a plug and play job? Would it be easier to find a bumper with one already fitted or are they pretty easy to swap in and out?

Thanks!

Disposing of my Ti. Only two owners from new with excellent service history. Recently had cambelt & oil/filter changed.
Drives very well, however, has been loosing coolant every 2/3 weeks or 200-300 miles. Have been told the dreaded HEAD GASKET is to blame - slightly pressuring the cooling system and forcing coolant out at the hose joints.
BRG in colour, sunroof, 6-CD player, 1/2 leather etc, and a few car park mods.
Any interest, just PM me. Located in Plymouth, Devon

On the hunt again...

On the hunt again...

Hi folks

Long time no see

I'm soon to be on the lookout for an MG ZT-T (preferred) or ZT 190 V6 (I 'may' consider the 180 Auto if it's in very good condition). However, I may consider the 2.0 CDTi 135 engine as well (never owned one of these) and even maybe the 1.8T, but not interested in the 1.8 or V6 160, sorry

Happy with pre and post facelift

Ideally would like cruise, xenons with working washers and good service history/receipts etc

I'm selling my 2002 BMW E39 530i Sport as I want to chuck some money back into my business, but also, I'm a habitual car-swapper, much to my wifes chagrin haha.

** I could be interested in a swap with the right car and cash my way; let me know if this could be of interest, the car is for sale on BMW E39 pages on here, eBay, Pistonheads and the BMW 5 forums too **

I'm only really interested in solid-condition ZTs that have had the necessary timing belt work and with an engine/running gear that's in A1 condition.

Not after rust-buckets or damaged cars, don't mind rough alloys as they can soon be refurbed, low-tread tyres & also not too bothered by cosmetic car-park dings (we all know these can't be avoided), but no major dents/scratches/bad paintwork etc

Budget is around £1500, but will pay for the right car.

I'm based in Preston, but happy to travel for the right vehicle!

Just wanted to see if anyone on these forums may know of such vehicle etc... I'm not desperate and happy to wait for the right motor. Ideally the 530i needs to sell first, so we've room on the drive for maneuver etc

Thanks

MG ZS Radiator fan - Wire To Toggle Switch

MG ZS Radiator fan - Wire To Toggle Switch

Hi Folks,

The wiring for the radiator fan on my ZS is shorting out somewhere ( new fuse pops each time installed and I've wired the fan directly to the battery and the motor runs.) ( I did notice some smoke coming from under the bonnet a while ago and since then no radiator fan and the fuse pops each time ignition is turned on, hence it being a short)

I'd like to wire it to a switch on the dash so I can turn the fan on whenever I want but have no idea how to go about it and any youtube videos I've seen have been pants home made ones. All the garages I've seen have said they wont touch it as its an electrical issue as opposed to mechanical and even if I could get someone to look at it no doubt it would cost a fortune to diagnose where the bare wires are shorting.

Any help, screenshots on what to do etc would be great.

Many thanks.

Darren.

Car lover's experience of claiming with Chris Knott

Hi, you'll be aware we regularly post examples of the feedback we receive and these are geared more around members' experience of our prices. But here's an unsolicited tale of the experience of one car club member who needed our help when his car was stolen...

"Well as promised here is my review of the sad experience of having my pride and joy stolen. The MK4 VW R32 was stolen after what looks like a targeted burglary at my home. It was last seen with a group of Pakistanis in the Bradford area. The car was apparently HPI checked in the weeks prior to the theft, and also the week after the theft. Perhaps this implies it was targeted and was then attempted to be sold on.

Anyone who knows me and the car knows for the last 5-6 years of ownership how much that car was cherished. I'd spent thousands on it even in the last few months and weeks before it was stolen and it was planned to be kept forever. It was soul-destroying to see it stolen and in the hands of scum, but we were not harmed so I am grateful for that. All else is insured which helps one move on with their life.

To that end, I was expecting a nightmare from the insurers. You hear horror stories of low-ball offers of perceived market value and long protracted arguments of what your payout should be. You wonder when you will get paid, you wonder what car you will be able to get from the payout, you mentally prepare for bad news and insult to injury with the impending offer from the insurance company.

Thankfully with Chris Knott, and Highway Insurance, my experience of my first ever such claim on insurance was reassuringly good, and better than what I expected.

Claims for damage are relatively easy going, you get a quote and take the car for repair, drive a courtesy car, pay your excess, and then collect your car. Job done. Not so with a theft and Total Loss claim.

Something to be aware of which I wasn't:- in a total loss claim, where your car is deemed unrecoverable/unrepairable, you do not have access to a courtesy car. You have to get your own car or hire one at your own expense for the duration of the claims process upto the point you buy a replacement vehicle. £120 per week for a tiny supermini, not including insurance waivers and other extras. If you need something larger you pay more. If it takes 4 weeks to get a payout, and a new car thereafter, you are easily £500 out of pocket already.

I needed a car to get to work etc. so the pressure was on to get the matter resolved. In my heart I wanted the car back, but after hearing of the lowlife ragging it around their dumps in Mannigham and Firzinghall I decided I no longer wanted it back, and wanted to move on. A sad end to lovely years with the best car I'd ever had.

I made the claim to Chris Knott, and was put in touch with several departments and then finally the claims handlers. They collected information and investigated the claim. I was under a lot of financial pressure, as well as being quite emotionally charged just from the whole incident. I was concerned for my wife and was in the midst of making the house like Fort Knox. So I kept in regular contact with the claims handlers. There was a lady called Amy as well as others who showed great patience with me, and remembered me when I called.

The handlers investigated the claim and until that was complete the claim could not be passed forward for conclusion by the technical engineers. This took the best part of 3 weeks from the theft date. I contacted them every few days for an update and to let them know the issues I was facing.

Then it finally came to an offer from the technical engineer which, as expected, was a low-ball offer which they said was based on the Glass's Guide for my mileage. So I had to write to them about the car, its history, its condition, its equipment and how it differed from other cars which were being advertised at lower prices.

I eventually got a call from the engineer who in all honesty was a really nice guy, and reasonable. He explained his role and his payout limitations and being able to justify to auditors any value he agrees. We discussed my car at length and I felt he was sensitive to the situation of losing a car which one is passionate about, as opposed to a monetary loss of a form of transport. He himself was a car enthusiast which made me feel as if he understood me.

In the end I am happy to say that we were able to agree a settlement which I was happy with. I felt I was treated like an individual, and I was treated fairly. The final agreed offer brought closure to the issue, as opposed to add to the pain. The cheque for the payout arrived within days of the agreement being reached.

Such was my overall experience with Chris Knott and Highway, that they will be my first choice for a renewal quote from now on. The last thing you want in a time of painful issue is for more insult to be added to injury with hassle and poor payout. Chris Knott are understanding to people who cherish their cars, modify them and look after them." JamesBaby, R32 Owners Club

If you'd like to be looked after by a broker who understands your needs and the passion you have for a car that is more than just a mode of transport, we'd be happy to talk.

Your yearly budget is?

I have read a few posts were people here have mentioned that they have forgotten how much they have lovingly invested in their MG F/ TF. So...

I wondered how much do you budget each year?

Here is my list. Yours will be different no doubt.
General costs:- Insurance, Garage Service, Mot, Road tax, Fuel = about £990 pa.

Everything else I allow around £500.
This year so far. Tyres £100, Door handles £45, Paint £15, Aerial £10, Paint sealer £24,
Polish £4, Bulbs £10, Roof spray £15, dehumidifying crystals £2, steering rack new £165, Garage work £200.
Spend so far £590. So slightly over.

Total spend £1580 Too much? Too little?

My Father in Law has just lost £9k in 3 years at trade in. £3k a year depreciation. Gulp.
That would keep my Tf on the road .... years.

Air filter and throttle body position

Air filter and throttle body position

Hi,
This is a bit of a techy question relating to the position of the air filter (on a 180 specifically, but I guess it relates to any vehicle). In general, there would appear to be two options, first with the air filter next to/ near the TB and a cold air collection pipe running in to the inner wing (for example), or secondly, have something like a foam cone filter in the inner wing and a pipe from this to the TB. So, the air tract length from the TB to the inner wing is the same, but key is the position of the filter, either close to, or remote of, the TB.
From a performance point of view, which is better? If one is better, why is this the case? What is the reason for one having a benefit over the other? This assumes both are drawing cold air from the same place. Or does it not matter at all? Would be interesting to understand if there are differences.
Cheers!

Since I have had my cambelt replaced I can hear a hissing sound when I accelerate some one hS said it could be my turbo on way out but would it make that noise or just go pop altogether.some has said it could be a split hose sucking air in as I accelerate but can't seem to see anything.
Have just had my back box and centre exhaust sections replaced and guy said flexi pipe is looking a bit ropey so maybe could be that.

MG to end UK car production at Longbridge with switch to China

MG to end UK car production at Longbridge with switch to China - BBC News

Quote:

They've had a flawed business model in that it was importing virtually the entire car for Longbridge with some very limited assembly, about 40 to 50 workers.
I think what has really scuppered them is the Brexit vote.
They had fundamental business problems in that they were not selling as many cars as they hoped and they had the big import costs of components.
Post Brexit though, the costs of import are much more expensive so costs are higher and there is uncertainty about the future on the trading relationships in Europe.
What they had hoped to do was use the UK as a launch pad for selling into Europe. If - big if - we are no longer part of the single market what is the point of investing there?

Time to say farewell to my MGF

I'm afraid my lovely 2001 MGF CVT has succumbed to HGF and I've decided I'm going to dispose of it, partly because I can't really afford to get it repaired and also I don't fancy another Winter in a drop top. My question is whether to sell it on Gumtree or Ebay (I guess I'd get £150 tops) or offer it for breakage (bearing in mind I'm no mechanic). I would have thought the CVT gearbox would be worth a few quid on it's own.

Some thoughts and suggestions would be welcome please.

Rear back /dust plates

I have just purchased a pair of new complete rear back plates, with shoes, springs, adjusters etc, from DMGRS. My question is about the 4 bolts that fix the backplate to the rear arm.

The old plates have rusted so badly the shoe retaining spring and peg , have pulled straight through.

As I couldn't get new bolts anywhere I was wondering what type of head they have. Also are they a pig to remove.

Many thanks

Hold on. I have a good idea. 620ti Stowbar Content.

Hold on, I have an ...

My second project MG ZT ( Currently on long term SORN due to £270 VED P.A. ) came with the complete Witter Stowbar Frame attached, minus the all important quickly detachable Stowbar Ball attachment. I sourced the latter and transferred the complete assembly to my daily driver MG ZT Saloon after cleaning and painting the assembly to protect against corrosion. Impressive piece of Kit. :~

More recently, spotted another Stowbar Frame less ball attachment on a 75 in a local scrapyard. Removed that, refurbished it and fitted it to the ZT-T :~

Again a patient search on ebay produced the missing part for a few quid. Delighted with the result. These QD ( Quickly Detachable ) Stowbars and really useful and versatile. Used both a couple of times already. Recovering an MG Metro ( Contact Breaker points closed up ~ What's those Dad? ) and a few of trips to the Council tip to dispose of a trailer loads of assorted rubbish.

The second ebay Stowbar Ball Attachment came with the fixing bracket as well. So that was spare as I already had one. I wonder if it's possible to fit it to the Rover 620ti. Careful measurements showed it should be possible but drilling the additional mounting holes, removing excess metal from the 620ti's tow bar frame were beyond my resources. I used a local engineering firm ( in Stonehouse ) to do that for me ... cost thirty quid but they did a perfect job so money well spent. Here's the modified Frame with additional bolt hole :~

Trial fitment...perfect :~

Rubbed down the frame ( which I had painted/refurbished ten years previously when first fitted to the 620ti ) where needed and painted the bare metal with Hammerite Smooth Black and Gold. Just a few mms in the bottom of old tins I hate to see wasted.. My previous effort confirmed it was time well spent. The old tow bar was in very good shape and should live on for more years with fresh paint :~

Fitted to car :~

Stowbar locked in place. Takes a few seconds only to remove or replace.

Some years ago, a near neighbour had on pro-fitted to his car on the hard standing in front of his garage. He had little change out of four hundred quid. By patient searches of ebay and local breaker yards, three of my cars have Stowbars fitted to them for a mere fraction of that. They are a nice piece of kit.

They are always handy. Few years or so ago, a good friend phoned up late at night rather worried. His daughter's car had broken down a few miles away from me. Could I recover her car to their place a few miles away ... yes, of course I could. Few days later, my son phoned up. His clutch slave cylinder had packed up stranded in Cheltenham... losing fluid past that little seal ~ soon had his car back home. Then there was the BMW I pulled out of a ditch during a period of exceptional freakish sheet ice in Gloucestershire. His rear wheel drive car could not cope and slid into the ditch and nearly tipped over.,

That's what friends and Dads are for. However, if you prefer a more peaceful life with less interruptions, do NOT fit a tow bar ... or, do not let folks know your car has one...... .....

Let's block ads! (Why?)

Hold on. I have a good idea. 620ti Stowbar Content.
