Mg zr van mot pass

I have had my van in for mot, I had been sat on my drive since February as I needed to change the driveshafts
Motel it today passed with a few minor issues
I have a Renault kangoo van that is a couple of years old (replacement for zr)
And it's decided to break up its injector pump to the tune of 1800 to rectify
Love the MG

QuestionHow to replace the key case for Rover 75

Dear all,

I have newly bought a wonderful carefully used Rover 75 from 2004. While buying I got the old key and the new case, to change the case myself. I have managed to change the case and the circuit board, all is working. But how do I transfer the key itself? Very thankful for any insights into this.

With kind regards,

Caroline from Sweden

Two MG dealers win at the prestigious Car Dealer Magazine Awards.

Two dealers from MG’s national franchise network have been recognised for their service and sales excellence at the prestigious Car Dealer Magazine Awards. Taking place at The Brewery in London on 28 November, the highly-acclaimed event is the highlight of the used car calendar.

Brecon Motors, which has been serving the motorists of Wales since the early 1900s, received nominations for the Service & Repair Outlet and Used Car Sales Team categories. Adding to the celebrations, John Stuart & Warrington MG received a nomination for the Used Car Award 2016 (dealership with more than 100 cars).

All three categories are set to be hotly contested, with leading car dealerships from across the UK vying to take home the sought-after titles.

Jonathan Williams, Managing Director at Brecon Motors, commented: “It’s a real privilege to be nominated for two categories in the Car Dealer Awards. As a showcase of the UK’s best used car dealerships, we’re thrilled to have received these nominations as a representative of the MG brand.”

James Drinkwater, General Manager at John Stuart & Warrington MG, commented: “As a family-owned business, we pride ourselves on delivering expert advice, a friendly welcome and the best possible customer service from start to finish. Being recognised in the Car Dealer Awards is not only testament to our hard work, but also the dedication and commitment of each member of staff.”

Matthew Cheyne, Head of Sales & Marketing at MG Motor UK, added: “Having two dealers nominated in the Car Dealer Awards is a huge achievement. Both Brecon Motors and John Stuart & Warrington MG should be incredibly proud of their accomplishments. Everyone here at Longbridge will have their fingers crossed on 28 November!”

Protip for changing your cambelt

Protip for changing your cambelt

I've had this recommended to me by a mechanic and it's one of those "do at your own idiotic risk" but it's perfectly sane and safe if done correctly.

If you haven't got a cam locking tool what you do is simply cut your old cambelt down the middle essentially slicing it into two equal pieces. rotating the knife along the middle of the belt.

This is assuming you can rotate the cams freely so ungear that sucker first.

Then simply loosen the tensioner, slide your new belt into place using the old one as a guide.

Now comes the careful bit. You then simply cut away from the new belt into the old one and peel it off. The new belt should now be half in place and just needs to be pushed onto the cams fully.

No locking tool required, not panic over whether the cams are out of alignment.

Tighten up the tensioner and you're done.

Engine mount compatibility

Hi guys.

Can you help me to try to find out if the LR Freelander KKB102480 engine mount is compatible with the one for Rover 25 / MG ZR with the following PN KKB000421?

I have to replace ASAP this engine mount in my MG ZR and hey seem to be the same by photos.

I am about to try the LR engine mount as it is way too cheaper than the MG-Rover ones.

Did anybody try this previously?

Btw, I took some measures of my failed MG-R engine mount (not very precise though), so if anyone of you has a spare LR engine mount and doesn't mind of measure it to see if it matches, I would be very thankful.

Engine rebuild

I am in the middle of stripping down the original engine that came with my scrapyard car as my early winter project and I have some questions.

The liners seem to be level with the block and, as far as I can tell, each other (I plan to recheck). Am I better to fit shims to the bottom of the liners and use the MLS gasket or stick with the updated MG rover elastomer gasket? If I fit shims, I will need to take the pistons out and that means disturbing the shells, the crank etc. I'm prepared to do all that but I would appreciate some advice. The head looks to be level according to my straight edge and feeler gauge. It looks like the elastomer gasket, that was in place, failed.

If I take the pistons out, do I need to replace the bolts at the crank or am I able to re-use these?

The engine oil was fairly manky. Should I replace the bottom rail or is it possible to clean it and re-use? I'm about to take the sump off today and don't yet know which version of the rail is hiding there. If it's the older one, I plan to replace it anyway.

Lastly, what are the current arrangements for tightening head bolts? I saw somewhere a figure in nm (that I can't find right now for some reason) followed by 180 and a 2nd 180 turn? I thought it was 90 turns and a higher torque setting. So I'd appreciate latest advice.

Getting into bonnet from outside

Getting into bonnet from outside

Hi All,

So I just bought this MG ZR. The battery has gone flat with the cold weather (I think the alternator needs replacing), the car is locked and key isn't going into the lock on the driver's door. I was locking it and unlocking it using the remote and hadn't actually tried the keys in the lock, though they both work in the petrol cap and ignition. It's definitely not just a case of an iced up lock. So how can I release the bonnet from the outside to hook some jump leads up and re-power the car so I can open it ?

Any help would be gratefully received !

Dave.

Can't engage driveshaft with hub splines

Hi,

I set about changing a torn C.V. boot, drivers side boot at hub, 1.4 K 45 2005.

My approach was release the lower arm balljoint and nothing else.

Now upon reassembly I find that I just can't get the driveshaft splines to engage with those of the hub.

Am I going to have to take the hub off the upper mount and the tie-rod to get it onto the shaft?

There must be some trick to it.

One other thing that worried me. I am using the manual from my old 400, which describes a stop ring and a circlip. Upon dissassembly, there was no stop ring. Is that right for 2005?

Any help much appreciated.

Door strip decals

Two questions here.

1. On a silver 25, what colour should the background be behind the "25" decal on the front door protector strips? On mine the drivers side one is silver, but on the passenger side it is black. I am guessing that either one has faded or the other one has darkened somehow.

2. How do I fix the one that is the incorrect colour? Is it just a sticker or is the protector strip sprayed in that colour?

I bought my Rover 25 back in September, and I am just getting round to sorting these jobs out.

New MG3 owner with a reversing issue!

Hi guys!

Has been some time since I've been on this forum due to letting my MGF Trophy 160 go a couple of years ago.

I decided to jump back into MG ownership with a brand new MG3 in October.

Pretty pleased with it up until a couple of weeks ago when the engine just decided to cut out when reversing. Initially, I thought it was my error first time it occurred with it being a new car. Has since happened another 5 times over the past week.

It's not as though it has stalled, if anything it's more like the energy saving feature kicks in and the engine starts again once I put my foot on the clutch. It also doesn't happen everytime. Some days it doesn't happen at all when reversing. Really odd!

I've now booked into a main dealer in Bristol to be checked over next week but just intrigued to see if anyone else has experienced anything similar as dealers appeared baffled when I explained it to them.

Any info/suggestions would be fab!

Thanks guys!

Krissy

I've slowly been sorting my 25 now that I have had my SCU back from Technozen, who worked his magic on it

The latest issue is that both front doors locks have been unplugged. I am thinking that they had a deadlock issue in the past, as there is lots of damage to the area around the passenger door catch. Possibly from smashing out the old lock.

I saw somewhere that some one said a wire can be cut to disable the deadlock motor, but I don't remember which.

Been on the Alfa forums, not much in the way of hands on how-to's like here. Diesel looks like a complete arse to service, oil filter buried under the engine.
Also, seems like the DPF is as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit.

Not sure if free stuff qualifies as selling or not - apologies mods if I'm breaking any rules.

Not been on the forum for a long while, as I sold my ZS nearly a year ago. I've had a clear out of my garage stuff today, and I have some stuff left over from my ZS and 420 GDSi.

I don't want anything for them; if there's no takers it's going in the bin anyway but I'd rather forum members can make use of them if possible. The only catch is you have to collect from West Sussex (Crawley / Horsham areas) and it's first come, first served.

I have:

1) Un-opened 5L container of Halfords 10W-40 semi-synth engine oil to suit K series petrol engines. It has some notes written on the bottle from my old car but otherwise as new.

2) Approx. 2L of MTF-94 transmission oil. The container is open but the oil's clean. Suits the PG1 gearboxes.

3) 2 x Halfords oil filters HOF 231. I believe this fits the L series diesel cars but please check this yourself.

Hope everyone's keeping well

Sump cover gasket

Since I bought my F it has been dripping oil from the sump cover. I discovered when installing the uprated oil rail that on the block, that most of the threaded holes that the sump bolts thread into had been stripped. I repaired the threads using helicoids but I buggered one on the front side of the engine. I used the correct anaerobic sealant on the sump.
This past summer the sump started leaking again, leaving a lovely little puddle of oil directly below the one sump screw that doesn’t tighten; the one I buggered.
This winter I am going to try to fix that buggered thread but I was wondering if the oil sump gasket, part # LVF100290, used on the Rover200/25/ 400/45/MG ZR/ZS can be used on the MGF’s sump cover? According to Rimmer, the Rover200/25/ 400/45/MG ZR/ZS use the same block at the MGF and TF, so I would think that the gasket would work/fit. Has anyone used the oil sump gasket on an MGF’s k-series engine?

Beware Car Insurance Cover on new cars......

Beware Car Insurance Cover on new cars......

Hi all,
I've just taken delivery of a new MG3
As a consequence, I've been looking at the small print on my AA car insurance policy, in conjunction with Gap Insurance policies. I did think that, in the event of a write-off or loss (theft) in the first year (actually 13 months with the AA) then the AA would replace the vehicle on a like-for-like new for old, so long as the repair costs 60% or more of the new car list price. Until I found this, purely by chance:

http://ift.tt/2go9rqU

- at which point I read the small print on my AA policy again. And strangely they don't make clear at what point (with respect to market value) they declare a car to be a write-off.

Basically, it is possible for your new car to be declared a write-off, yet still not qualify for the "new for old" clause. It could leave you very out of pocket. I've emailed the AA to seek written confirmation of their "write-off" policy.......

The bottom line is that it could be (probably is) very wise to start a Gap Insurance policy from Day One, rather than defer it for 12 months in the belief that the standard Car Insurance Policy will provide full cover in the first year.

Help with my buying mg tf

Help with my buying mg tf

Hi All,

I am looking into buying an MG TF. I saw a guide somewhere and followed it (will give link later). According to the guide there is only one bad point I.e corrosion on part of subframe. The clutch, engine condition is fine.

The real issue I see is that the heater on full or medium or low blast in all three settings was cycling between hot and cold air. Is this something to worry about? I think it's the thermostat because the head gasket was changed not long ago. There is no mixture in the coolant or the oil. On cold setting it kept the air cool so the seller thinks it is cycling on the hot setting to regulate the temperature inside the cabin, can this be true?

He didn't let me drive the car due to insurance but took me for a drive and I'm in love with the car. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

MG I6 and E6

So do we think the Roewe E6 and I6 will become the new MG 6 for the UK?

Given that one comes with a 1.0 turbo and electric motor producing a total of over 200bop and the other with 170bhp 1.5 turbo surely that would sell better than the 6 did especially a hybrid vehicle.

I can see this being a good move for the UK, in theory if would also tie up with the BTCC announcement that they would be developing a refreshed 6 within the next 3 years at the start of the new 3 year deal with 888.

We can hope of course I have no knowledge saying this will happen, just in my opinion should happen.

Heated rear windscreen wiring

Does the standard loom have heated rear screen wiring built in? I've found a likely looking bit on near side adjacent to rear screen.
Is the switch wiring in and how do I access the switch panel? I don't want to break anything and the panel doesn't seem to want to move.

Throttle cable purchase

Hi everyone!

Can someone please help me- I need to get another throttle cable as the one presently on the car is frayed, with bits sticking out everywhere ( I keep *****ing my fingers as I try to smooth them down!). Decided that a new one is in order but I don't seem to be having much luck finding one! I have found loads of throttle body's on eBay and Google search but no cable. Does anybody know any part numbers or perhaps have one for sale?
For MG ZR 160, 54 plate if there is any difference..... Many thanks

It seems that all the Sheel station that were at a resonable distance from me, have been closed by a couple of months now, so I'm stuck, mainly, with other brands.

It's the second time I've refuelled at BP with premioul petrol but it's possible to get a nearly 40 miles difference with a full tank using V-Power?
With BP I make around 260 miles in the city, around 300 with V-Power.

Replacement Dial Faces

Hello,

I’m now registered as a trader so can promote my range of plastic replacement dial faces.

I have started with a selection for the TF and will add designs for the MGF if there is enough interest.

They are professionally multi-layer printed onto plastic and cut out with a computer controlled cutter to ensure they fit correctly.

Most of the designs can be backlit if you want to modify your cluster or used with the original front illumination.

You can get £10 discount on the website prices for mg dials by using the code mgforum001 (code expires at the end of December)

I can also do custom designs.

Thanks

Blue tinted headlamps?

Legal or not? There are various opinions on the interweb, with a common theme seeming to be that there should be no blue lights shown on the front of the vehicle. This morning a lorry coming the other way on the M4 had about 20 of them for decoration!

I bought some cheapo ebay bulbs, but now I'm not sure about fitting them. They're listed as 6000k, and I've read that the limit for white light is about 4200. I see cars with a blue tint to the headlamps every day. So, what's the score???

The ones I've got are rated at 100/90W, so will the wiring and fuses be ok?

No big deal if I can't use them, they were only £5.75 for 4!

ECU Wiring diagram

Does anyone have a good clear diagram of which connectors run which system on the main ECU for the k-series?

I am going to need to re-jig a few things in due course including the RPM and also send some false signals for the injectors possibly but need to be able to have the functions like central locking etc still working of the 12V source.

Long story short, i'm converting an MG 135 to electric and need to be able to send signals/current to the bits that are not petrol engine related.

I have looked around already but there are limited images available.

The Haynes manual has some of the stuff I need but it's a bit vague.

MG F/TF Amp for door speakers

Hey guys,

Just joined the forum Got my 2004 MG TF in April. So far I've replaced the alternator and head gasket so hopefully it's gonna be ok now! So anyway I fitted a stereo last week, this is what i got...

http://ift.tt/2gvBHe1
http://ift.tt/2gvAaES
http://ift.tt/2gvBEPB

So it sounds pretty good but I was wondering if amping up the head unit will make much of a difference and if so, what would it change? I didn't know if the guy was trying to sell me something i didn't really need - the amp was £100. He said the head unit is "amp ready" so playing with the idea of getting one. Would be awesome if someone could tell me what it would do and any recommendations for an amp that would work well with my setup but would hopefully be less than £100! But if I need to spend that to get the most out of it I will.

Nice one guys

Another Tyre recommentdation post

Hi Guys,

I have a bit of an issue with my car feeling light/vague and drifting, I did all the initial checks, made sure its running the correct air pressure, etc., then took it for a 4 wheel laser alignment and still it drifts. Interestingly the company that did my alignment specialises in tuning lotus cars for track and they said that I have the wrong tyres which is most likely the problem.

I read up on the tyre specifics of cars and it certainly seems to be the case. I have cheap Maxxis tyres on the front and 2 different types of low budget on the rear. So I understand all the points and that I should stick to the 2/3 "recommended" brands and types, however from what I read these are not that great in the wet. Which is a problem for me.

As my car has a hard top on I intend to use it through most of the winter, but the problem is I travel some distances at times and I need tyres that are not going to see me aquaplaning along a motorway at 65mph or ditch hunting (I live in rural Suffolk) in a little frost, plus have the attributes for not wandering.

So with all that being said can anyone advise on a brand/tyre model that is either winter or all season that would tick all the boxes for the 15" wheels to help improve my handling and be winter safe?

Thanks in advance.

Si

To anyone who is interested there is a nice van come up on eBay, I would do a link but don't know how ?.
I had a nose the other day as you do, it's a nice low mileage car and it seems to be in good condition by the pictures. It seems to want a bit of paint but nothing serious. If I hadn't put so much money into mine I would consider it myself, it's blue rather than my starlight silver one so a better colour too, typical lol.
Just thought I'd let everyone know in case anyone here is on the look out. Please note also I have nothing to do with the car, I am just an enthusiast who would like to see someone who would appreciate it get it rather then a cheap run around which will end up scrapped.

I had my windscreen replaced, but as you can see in the photos the trims at the top (left and right are not seated properly. The fitter said this is because the clips used were not quite the same as Rover ones.
Obviously I said this was unacceptable, and they have said they will try to get the proper ones.
I don't hold out much hope for them doing this successfully, but I see they are available from Rimmers, £10 for a compelte set for each side.
If i get these, will it be an easy DIY, without damaging the glass or rubber finisher/trim?

Flat Battery alarm

Hi, I've had similar problems before but it seems cold weather brings them on. I only use my 54 ZR about once a week, and during cold periods I have problems with the battery going flat. This is the first time this year that it's happened.

I've got a mobile jump starter battery that I want to use. I can unlock the doors using the key in the door and pop the bonnet but once I connect the charger the alarm goes off. I'm guessing the battery is completely dead. I left it for about 5 minutes charging and it did turn on the electronics inside but it wasn't enough to start the engine. After that the alarm just kept going off, so I gave up so as not to have my neighbours kill me. Is it possible to disconnect the alarm by taking a fuse out so I can do this in silence?

52mm Throttle bodies For Sale

I have a number of used 52mm Alloy Throttle Bodies for sale which include the throttle position sensors.

These were fitted as standard to the MG VVC engines and on the TF135. They are an ideal upgrade to other K series engines that were fitted with smaller throttle bodies that often stick, or if you have one of the plastic ones. They will fit the MGTF, MGF. MGZR, Rover 25/200 etc.

The 52mm TB gives a crisper throttle response and a slight power gain.

They are genuine items fitted by MG made by Dellorto in Italy.

They are priced at £55 including delivery.

Payment by cheque or Bank Transfer please. Thanks
