R reg 400 engine in to a 45 ?

Happy New Year , Will this be possible 2001 45 1.6 and 1997 400 1.6 .

Uncle had not driven for over 12 months and apparently found his way in to the drivers seat.

Accelerator to the floor and foot on the clutch pedal the car only went a mile and a half before the clutch burnt out and there's gear box damage as well .

I am thinking of of replacing engine as well as the gearbox would it be a straight forward job or are there to many differences?.

Battery draining quickly

So as you, I didn't drive xmas day, went to go out Boxing day and the battery was dead. Got a jump start took it for a 20 mile drive on a dual carriage way (70 mph - approx 2500~3000 rpm) gave the battery a good charge. Next day again it struggles to start and gives the impression it was about to give up the ghost before it eventually fired up.

Day after same thing.

What could be draining the battery this much?

The battery is a few months old, and is heavy duty. The indicator on the battery suggests it's in good health.

O-rings - 1.8 thermostat housing

Hi all,

It is approx 9 months since I swapped the engine in my 1.8 tourer and things has worked greatly. I discovered a slight loss off coolant the last months and found the leak to be at the outer O-ring in the thermostat housing. Firstly I found it strange as I replaced both O-rings during the engine swap. One of them was a genuine seal from Rimmers, and the other one came from a low cost bottom end seal kit. Thermostat housing was removed and seals inspected. The inner O-ring was in sound condition. It felt soft and was only slightly deformed, which is quite normal. The other one was hard, cracked and deformed. It snapped during removal. No need to say that this one was not the correct grade for the job.

I did not have any OEM spare available so I measured the O-ring groove and picked a standard O-ring in a size and material grade based on common engineering practice which was a Ø33mm Inner Diameter with Ø3mm cross section. Material NBR/Nitrile. Everything put together and works fine. I have no doubt about the size, but would like to know what are the most common used elastomer seal material for OAT based cooling systems. For all I know, the cheap one was standard NBR material??

So what would the conclusion be??

Don`t by cheap, buy quality :)

ABS / Speedo Not Working

Last week my ABS light came on and the speedo stopped working. In the days since it has worked intermittently, some times they work, some times they don't.

I took it to the garage today to fit a new sensor on the front drivers side. The mechanic asked me if i was sure it was the drivers side as he says its usually the passenger side front on most cars but i said it was and he fitted it.

Unfortunately, it hasn't solved the problem. He said to me to book it in again and try the passenger front. Is it worth doing that?

The one he took off on the drivers side did have a split in the cable so i was sure that was the problem but obviously not.

Any ideas anyone?

Guess the UK Registrations for MG for 2015

Yes, for the whole year.

I thought this would get some discussion going. You have to predict the registrations from Jan 2015 to Dec 2015. This will be a lot a harder than a monthly guess as a lot can change in a year and we have become pretty good at predicting the sales now.

I will close this at the end of January just before the Jan figures come out from the SMMT.

2014 will probably end up between 2300 and 2400. I need to be optimistic so I will start with:

Hi all, just a couple of windscreen wiper funnies that I wanted to ask about:

1) Is it my imagination, or is it possible that the delay from when you first turn on the ignition and select intermittent wipe to the wipers moving could be getting longer as my car gets older? Sometimes, it can take between 6 and 8 seconds before the wipers actually move!

2) When you wash/wipe the windscreen, shouldn't the water come out first so that the wipers don't scrape over dry glass?

L series derv into Landrover

Hi all, currently own a Series 3 which weve put a Perkins Prima Turbo into. Great engine and very easy conversion from the petrol engine that was originally there.

Problem is prima stuff is getting rarer and more expensive, the fuel pump has just developed a major leak and has a major oil leak behind the cambelt cover so shes currently off the road being fixed.

This got us thinking, how easy would it be to put an L series in? Excellent engine, cheap donor cars about and parts plentiful.

We are thinking an that in the 80bhp form with mechanical pump would be the easiest route?

Has any one done this? seen some crazy guy that put one in a sherpa campervan but seemed a hell of alot of work compared to a perkins conversion?

Does anyone know with 100% certainty what the differences between the kv6 180 and 190 are?

Been searching but the best anyone seems to have is guesswork

Some sujestions....

Larger exhaust bore on 190

Larger intake bore 60mm on 190 (57mm on 180)

Different ecu map

And finally the bit that worrys me.... different cams.

180 engines seem to be easier to find than 190's so if the differences are easily swapped then it expands my options for finding an engine.

Im fairly sure the 160 would need cams which means new belts etc (when swapping cams over) which increases costs so want to avoid that

I have a radiator, thermostat & engine temp sensor to fit. I started today but thought it was too much taking the bumper off as it was getting late and cold.

I'm going to go at it again tomorrow. I'm just wondering firstly whether I need to take the bumper off at all? I have a pit and don't have a car with AC. Is there enough access for me to get it off?

Secondly, is it possible to get the thermostat out without taking off the inlet manifold? I simply don't have a replacement gasket, but these problems are causing my mpg to drop significantly so want them done asap. I'm happy doing a flush again if I need to fit a new gasket, but I have no coolant leaks so I don't see it as a must at the moment.

Thirdly, do I simply follow pengys guide for replacing the coolant? I've seen some people fill theirs with water and take it out for a drive, then flushing again?

Revised thermostat available - 75 / ZT Diesel models

Hello chaps,

Recently I've been working on a project with a manufacturing company who make thermostats and plastic housings - we've been looking at the thermostat fitted to the 75/ZT diesel models (as well as the Freelander TD4 etc) as a target for a 'new' item to hopefully solve the early opening problem.

I've just heard back with an update:

'Hi Mat,

We are confident the item discussed will not suffer with early opening or sticking, and should work properly for many years. The thermostat and housing will be made by us in house, using previously tried and tested designs.'

The most important factor is the cost - the complete housing and thermostat is £18.99.

A rather sharp contrast to current pricing of mid to late £30s.

I'll be offering a 2 year warranty on the item too.

You can order them here: M47 Revised Thermostat - 75/ZT

Cheers

I suspect is leaking coolant overnight between water jacket and cylinder, coolant isnt being pushed out under pressure and the car runs fine and idles perfect once its going, no oil and water mixing in any direction.

Inlet gasket was changed in 2013 as I thought the HG had gone then, but it was the inlet gasket.

I reckon its the original gasket on the head but I cant confirm mileage as at some point before our ownership it had a used engine put into it.

After doing the cam timing on our mk1 recently I am going to have a crack at this job myself, the parts arent too dear, and I have somebody who knows about this job on hand if I need owt.

Only thing is the car will still be used in the meantime while I get everything together to do the job, oh I wish I had a nice warm garage to work in but no I will have to be brave and work out in the back yard in the frost!! :(

Major water ingress

The recent slushy weather has delivered a soggy surpise. I appear to be taking in water at the front and the back - yesterday I found a damp patch in the boot right at the bottom, in the slightly sunken section at the lowest point, which appears to be weeping in through the light cluster. I'll get some silicone on that later...

Then I got into the car to discover an actual puddle in the passenger footwell, complete with a skin of ice on top! I've had issues with the drainage channel on the passenger side a-post before - but looks like a lump of slush was positioned just-so and essentially melted and drained into the car. bummer :/

regarding the 'tubing fix' for the door leak, can someone explain exactly how much tubing and how far to insert it? should it be a piece that just goes into the seal where it meets the cheater, or should it be the full length of the a-post right up to the top corner of the windscreen? also, what is the optimal width tubing to use? thanks in advance :)

Does this sound like an inlet manifold gasket leak? It's only a year old! Can the IMG leak externally?

PICS of the new SUV

MG has revealed its new GTS SUV in a series of official photographs.

First previewed by the CS concept at the Shanghai motor show back in 2013, the new five-seat SUV is planned to go on sale in China next May with a UK introduction earmarked for early 2016, according to officials from MG parent company Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation.

The production version of the GTS was styled under the guise of MG design boss Anthony Williams-Kenny, in a collaboration between the company’s Shanghai and Longbridge design teams.

The first ever MG SUV adheres closely to the look of the well received CS concept with a highly contemporary look featuring a clear family resemblance to the recently introduced MG3, MG5 and MG6.

Key styling elements include a simple grille featuring the traditional octagonal Morris Garages badge, heavily adorned two tone front bumper, trapezoidal shaped headlamps, sheer surfacing, structured flanks, blacked out pillars and angled tailgate.

At 4500mm in length, 1855mm in width and 1675mm in height, the GTS is 73mm longer, 46mm wider and 8mm lower than the Volkswagen Tiguan.

While earlier speculative reports suggested the new SUV was based on the same platform at the latest Ssangyong Rexton, MG says the GTS rides on a new scalable SUV architecture developed in partnership with parent company SAIC. It has a wheelbase of 2650mm – 46mm longer than that of the Tiguan.

MG has confirmed one engine for the GTS, although others are planned to follow according to officials from parent company SAIC’s UK engineering headquarters in Longbridge. The in-house developed turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine delivers a class competitive 217bhp and 258lb ft of torque.

On the initial GTS model pictured here, drive is channeled through a standard six-speed dual clutch gearbox, with buyers set to be offered the choice of either front- or four-wheel drive. In four-wheel drive guise, the new MG is claimed to accelerate from 0-62mph in “around 8.0sec”. However, more detailed performance and economy claims are yet to be made public.

Following its introduction to the Chinese market in early 2015, MG is also expected to offer the new GTS with a more affordable turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine producing 168bhp and 184lb ft.

Also planned for selected markets, including the UK, is a diesel variant of the GTS. It is earmarked to receive the same turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder common rail unit already offered in various MG models, where it delivers 148bhp and 258lb ft of torque.

  4. The Symbol light on the actual switch lights normal and is not effected...

Could this by the relay at fault? They have worked fine for over 2 years...

52 Plate Rover 45 Wiring Diagram

Hi all,

So I got myself a Rover 45 and it had a crappy aftermarket stereo in it. Upon inspection all of the wires had been cut and were in a right mess. Managed to tidy most of it up but I have a few wires that don't seem to match up with anything else. I have a lone blue wire that seems separate to the other wires.

Also my new stereo doesn't hold memory of clock or settings. I know I need to swap a red and a yellow over but I only have a yellow power wire. There is a red and black loose and not connected up but no red on my new stereo harness.

If anyone has a wiring diagram that would be great.

Hello all, I'm recovering the engine and g'box from a 1997 Rover 216 Vi [1.8 K series VVC engine] with about 110Km on it. It's an ex Japan export and came to NZ in 2006.

I also got the red box from the back of the interior fuse box which is in front of the driver.

Sadly there were no key/s of fobs.

Re the wiring loom: I cut this away under the ABS modulator where it then continued and disappeared through the fire wall in front of the glove box. Have I got enough to do this transplant?

MGF heater suddenly blowing cold

Hi all, my girlfriend's 2001 MGF has developed an issue of the heater only blowing cold air, and I can't figure out the cause. As long as she has had the car, it's been the case that the heater will only blow hot when the knob is turned up to the max, but it has always worked. When turning the knob, you don't get any resistance until it is nearly all the way to max, then you get a small amount of resistance that changes the air from cold to hot.

About 2 weeks ago, I was driving it and switched the heater from hot to cold. When then switching it back to hot, the temperature didn't change and the air continued to blow cold. There is now no resistance at all when turning the temperature knob between cold and hot.

The car has continued to drive with no problems, coolant temp gauge remains normal, coolant usage is normal and oil is fine. I did a 2.5 hour drive yesterday with no issues, other than a lack of hot air! I have removed the heating knob and can see that the spindle continues to turn between hot and cold.

Any ideas as to what may have caused the sudden lack of hot air? I have done a search of the forum, but have not been able to find anything relevant other than the recommendation to check the cables to the left of the clutch pedal, which I will do.

Claimed 0-60Mph and 0-100Km/h for 25 TD

What is the real factory claimed acceleration for the Rover 25 2.0D 99bhp?

I live in Portugal and here we use metric system and acceleration is measured in 0-100Km/h instead of 0-60Mph.

I always have seen 0-100Km/h in 9.9s but lately i´m seeing 10.7s in a lot of websites. About the 0-60Mph i already have seen 9.9s and 9.1s.

So i´m really confused. Maybe it´s 9.9s for 0-60Mph and 10.7s for 0-100Km/h but some sites and magazines makes a direct conversion presuming 0-60Mph are the same as 0-100Km/h? But i really doubt the car takes 0.8s between 60 and 62mph (true 100km/h) unless they change from 3th to 4th in that time.

Hi,

I've planned to increase fob range on my 45. I looked at this website : http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2...iser/index.htm

I saw that I have to put a wire on the fob, around the resonator. But this photo is for a Lucas 3TXA, on my fob 3TXD I have a resonator EPCOS R2701 which I found the datasheet here : http://html.alldatasheet.fr/html-pdf...8/1/R2701.html

The problem is that I don't really understand where I have to put the wire. It seems to be an antenna on the pin 2, and at the middle length of the antenna, there is a resistor (a CMS 330 I think) which it links to a second antenna and a lot of components.

Does someone have an idea ? I could send a photo if needed.

Thank you

I was also advised to use the Payne head bolts and on reading the instructions they say to torque the head we must use the following procedure. First 20NM then four times 90 degree turns not the normal 20NM then 2 times 180 degrees. Engineering logic this sounds like a more even pull down. After watching a promotion video on the net and seeing how they torque this head, each bolt is tightened on a torque jig all at the same time first to 20NM then one turn to 360 degrees so no crisscross sequence. So when it got cold a few weeks ago I started having cold start issues, I new battery seemed to resolve this.

But this morning the car would not start and the battery drained.

It started first time when jumped from a 1.5 dci clio.

Just to confirm the likely issue

Fuel pump timing?

Dodge alternator?

Thank All (again)

VVC Inlet port models- Std and modified

In what has become an odyssey, I have been gradually building CAD models of the various flow components of the cylinder head.

Previously I showed some port cutaways;

Inlet: http://ift.tt/1HNSjjo

Outlet: http://ift.tt/1x8DlmB

These photos shows the differences between a standard VVC inlet port and one that has been modified on a head i'm currently working on.

There is not particular point to this, just comparison photos to help visualise the air in an inlet port, while I ready the good stuff.

People versed in port modification will clearly spot that it is by no means heavily modified; maybe a 75% job?

A lot more material could come out of the valve guide boss 'hump', although (and it's not clear from the photos) the idea was to try to create a soft transition from the long side radius wall to the valve guide, which was shaped to guide around the valve stem.

The head is a demonstrator for something else, so that's as far as that modification will go.

You can see a remnant of a casting line on the modified port - the head had pretty bad casting misalignment and I didn't want to chase it too far, and this is why i'm not putting a lot of work into the head.

The photos are back to back and there are notes at the end of the post.

Std port, as cast:

A back to back shot showing the dip around the valve guide boss in the standard port flattening the long side radius around the valve protrusion. The modified port shows that material removed to improve the flow around the hump but, as mentioned above, there is more that could be done there if one was going to continue with the head. The inside wall (where the bifurcation is, the centreline) is much better in that respect.

And what a half port to 1 valve looks like:

The main items to note are:

The misalignment of the valve seats to the ports is much improved - always a winning modification.

The surface roughness is significantly decreased - also a winning modification. People often scoff and say they want (my favourite internet engine quote here) 'a nice bit of turbulence' and so claim the port should be rough. I've not found a port fuel injected engine that performs better with a cast surface.

The amount of flow disturbing features and size of them has been reduced; the valve guide bosses and the bowl has been reshaped to make the radius a bit more coherent.

If that's all you could manage to do to a head you would be happy with the results.

Then you'd want more.

205/50/R16 vs 205/55/R16

Hi guys, its weird but my MGZS first came with 205/50/R16 tyres and thats what I have always put on the car. However whenever I have searched via the car registration, it always comes up as 205/55/R16? Would it make a difference if I put one of the 55's on whilst the other 3 are '50s'? I ask as the 55s are LOTS cheaper?!...

Hi guys as per my other threads my heat blower has been cold takes ages to warm up I've checked my haynes I cannot find the control valve it is not where it's ment to be and there's nothing else on the pipe work ......... I've heard one pop from behind the glove box when I had a air lock no idea what it is but it's still working and this was after the original issues ...... then just took my cap off because tank looked empty as I did a massive amount of pressure was released and coolent came rushing into the tank like it was unable to get into the tank because of the pressure I've had no fluid loss is it possible I have a air lock in the heater matrix and not in the cooling system and how I.I bleed is it best to leave cap off and let it run?

MG F wheel on ZR

I've searched google and the forum and can't find a definitive answer to this, so it'd be good if it was stickied :)

I'm buying an F wheel for my ZR. Do I simply need to bring across the coupler from the F, add it to my ZR, and the horn buttons will work fine?

Alternatively, I read that you can manually feed horn buttons from the ZR wheel instead? Does this keep the airbag functioning properly too?

New Owner From Birmingham

Hi All,

Now a Rover 45 owner, 1.6 and 02 plate. Only passed my test a month ago. Purchased a Renault Megane convertible for my first car but the timing belt went after 3 weeks and i had to scrap it. Great start to motoring!

I now have a Rover 45. Few minor problems but nothing that cant easily and most importantly, be cheap to fix. Living in Birmingham may have its advantages at the supply of parts!

Anyway just wanted to say hi and will no doubt be firing questions about!

Happy Holidays!

Jake

Engine Warning Light - R25 1.4 103ps

Hi all,

I'm new here! Got a 1.4L iL 103ps 52 plate, had it 6 months and recently the engine warning light has come on. At first it came on, stayed lit for about 45 minutes of driving, and then went away when I turned engine off and restarted. Took it to 2 Kwik Fits and they couldn't read the ECU - first one thought there was something wrong with their Bosch kit, second one couldn't connect (I wasn't charged). Exactly a week later the light came back on and has stayed on since (5 days).

I've got no other symptoms - no funny noises, performance is unchanged and I'm always checking the coolant after head gasket failure on my old Vauxhall Corsa. Oil was topped up recently.

The only thing that I thought was strange at the time was that I'd fitted a new stereo on the day the light first came on and also changed the wood centre console facia which involved unplugging the console switches - but I don't see why this would cause an engine fault code? Squealing alternator belt was tightened about a week before the light first came on. Car doesn't have A/C or ABS.

Has anyone ever had anything like this before - specifically being unable to read the ECU? Any thoughts on what the likely culprit is? The guy at Kwik Fit thought it was likely just the ECU having a tantrum that cleared itself, but then the light came back on...
