Lambo door mods

I know this will likely only interest a few..

But got Andy Watson coming to mine next weekend to sort out his Lambo door kit

We fitted the NAS sport kit last year.. Which took forever.. Yes its a bolt on kit.. But the cable routing suggested doesn't work and had a problem with the front edges of the doors catching the wings when opening

I've done a lot of modding to my hinges.. And now my doors open up much tighter to the car (door only opens 13") and up more vertically

Not doing the same on Andys but we are sorting the 'blowing in the wind' effect when upright and also replacing the supplied gas struts with some new 28mm gas struts with ball joints on the ends

Happy to take pics and post if other owners of the same hinges want?

Nothing wrong with the kit supplied by NAS sport.. I fact I think its cheap compared to other kits for other cars.. But I (just me) think it needs a few Tweeks to sort the wobble when door up and the gas struts supplied ain't up to the job..

MG-Rover North East ---April report

MG-Rover North East April meet report.

April and the latest meet of MG-Rover North East, with a great turn out.

Unfortunately the weather was rubbish again, but that didnt put people off too much.

Although I got there before 11:30, I wasn't the first as I was greeted by Aidrian Mathews in his ZT and a couple of new members, Adam Hall and Dean Linley in Adams nice example MGF..Dean promises he'll be in his 200 next time.

Numbers started to increace with many regulars turning up, including Simon in a monogram 'typhoon' ZR and Daniel in his newly white wrapped ZR.. and a lovely job has been done to it too...with Another new face of Gary McKitten in his ZS. As always there was a nice veriety of cars, including Rover 45 Rover 75 MG F, ZR, ZS, ZT and ZT-T.

I'd also like to extend a warm welcome to Steven Walton who turned up in a Triumph Dolomite.. its great to get some veriety of other british cars linked to the Rover Group. Our next meet will be 25th May and although I'll not be able to make it, I hope you'll all get together and get some more pictures..

Back from the garage!

Hey all,

I posted in the "Introduce yourself" page that we'd bought a 2002 ZS 120 for £400.

The day after we bought it we had it in the garage for a suspected wheel bearing. Turned out the lug nuts were falling off. Found a water leak from the thermostat housing. Had that replaced. Then one of the coolant hoses busted. Had that replaced. Next day it over heated. Back to the garage to be told it was HGF. We'd had the car for 7 days, 5 of which it had been in the garage. I said in my post I'd write down what the outcome was as it's been in the garage now for 17 days and we've just got it back. Here's a break down of what this little gem has cost us in 3 weeks.

Cost of the vehicle - £400

Replacement lug nuts - £26

Thermostat housing and fitting -£146

Coolant hose and fitting - £100

HGF (breakdown of parts and labor)

Labour £324

Spark plugs - £27.60

Water pump - £32.34

MLS head gasket and stretch bolt kit - £120

Cam belt kit - £53.33

Cylinder head and hoses (scrap yard) - £180

Pressure test and skim (first cylinder head) - £67.50

Pressure test (second cylinder head) - £45

Oil filter - £5.46

10/40 semi synthetic oil - £27

Radiator (mine was faulty) - £61.90

Antifreeze - £15

VAT - £170.66

Grand total - £1695.93!!

Not bad for a car I've only driven for 2 days. Sure does run pretty sweet now though.

rTi Ride height?

Just wondering what the standard ride height of the 620Ti should be. Bought mine already lowered, old ad says 20mm lower but it's very low to my eyes, so low that speedbumps cause it to scrape horrendously and some driveways are a major pain to get on and off. I'm actually really concerned about driving to work as it's on a hill with some speedbumps round the corner, not sure if it'll make it there!

If anyone could tell me the standard ride height it'd be much appreciated so I can see how much lower mine is. I think I might be buying a set of standard shocks etc and getting them swapped over ASAP at this rate! It is on 17s which possibly doesn't help much, but those were factory fit on this SW Autodesign I'm led to believe.

Places to check for rust immediately? Mk1 ZS td

Hi all

Collecting my new mk1 ZS td in a week and a bit, and just want to know where I should begin to check for rust in places I might not have been able to check when I viewed it?

The car was waxoiled over the underside, wheel arches and engine mounts have been done, this was last year

There is a small amount of paint cracking/surface corrosion on the passenger rear quarter by the back screen but I should be able to flat this, rust treat then blow over?

When I get it I plan to remove the wings and bumpers to check behind there, but is there anywhere else I should be concerned about?

Love the car and will be wanting to keep it in top condition hence my paranoia about rust lol it seems to be a big problem?

Also, when do you suggest I get a full £400 waxoil/underseal treatment done again? I was thinking next year, 2 years after the last one?

Cheers

My Cherry Bomb MG3

Hello all,

Have been lurking on this forum for a while reading others' experiences before taking the plunge and getting a MG3 Style (Cherry Bomb) of my own, so thought it was only fair to share my own updates.

Ordered in mid-Feb from SMC Woking and was a couple of months until collection, so have had the pleasure of the car for around a fortnight now. MG for some reason apparently delivered it with leather seats (which I didn't want) so that put an extra few days until collection while that was sorted out.

(Apparently if you want a Cherry Bomb 3, it's a wait until August, but plenty of white ones available at much shorter notice!)

Pros

  • A general like of driving the thing.... the handling, and especially the feel of it pulling into 2nd and 3rd; and a satisfying noise when cruising in 5th

  • Parking sensors doing their job well

  • Carried four passengers on its first day - all commented how surprisingly spacious it was inside

  • Averaging almost 40mpg according to the computer despite being early days for the engine

Downsides/niggles:

  • A week after buying, some **** decided to key all the way down the driver's side  so need to get down to a repair shop to sort that

  • The phone connectivity kit seems a bit odd (I ordered the iPhone 5 kit). You can't fit a USB cable with the cradle in place; and to use the cradle you need to put the iPhone in a third party case (which was provided - Griffin I think). No issues hooking it up via Bluetooth though, that all works a treat.

  • The 1st/2nd over-rev thing. As others have noted, not an issue at very low or very high revs, but its taking a while to get used to.

  • The stereo 'rattles' the passenger side speaker at some frequencies

  • Auto-wipers are ever-so-slightly slower than what I would choose if they were being manually operated. Not enough to be unsafe, but enough to annoy me slightly :)

  • According to the other half, the horn is a bit wimpy...

Happy to answer any questions... if you see a Cherry MG3 around SW London/Sussex/Surrey that may well be me so give a wave!

75 1.8T Temperature Guage Cool

Hi, I have a 2003 Rover 75 1.8T SE petrol with about 56,000 miles on the clock. I had the head gasket done in 2011. Just after that there were a few coolant leaks as some tubes burst but once all leaks were plugged it's run very smoothly and quietly and still is today. I also had the problem of the temperature gauge dropping to zero a few years ago and got that replaced. That's the history, anyway a few months ago I noticed when I was doing 80 or 90 particularly downhill the temperature gauge would drop slightly from 9 oclock to about 7 or 8 o clock but when I got back to a normal speed it went back to 9. Today I noticed that nearly the entire motorway journey it was on 8 oclock, the faster I went the cooler the gauge got but when I idle or do 30 it's always bang on at 9 oclock. Anyone else seen this specific issue ?

Thanks

Battery Question

Hi All,

Provided the weather is OK I'm hoping to be able to update my other thread re wet carpet this weekend as I should finally have time to get the seat out etc.

In the meantime, I also need a replace the battery (it has a MG Rover part number so I'm assuming it is original). I found a post on here saying that I need a type 96 battery so thats what I looked for, but when I searched on the part number to double check the results seem to suggest that it is a type 75 battery and the 96 was for the diesel, so now I'm confused again. The engine is a 1.8T. Also I'm assuming putting in a bigger battery wouldn't affect the alternator? (probably a silly question!)

What to do? re: Clutch

Hi all - just after some opinions really. I've had a 1998 Rover 200 1.4 for 2 years now. Few bits and bobs gone on but generally a good runner. For the past year there has been a rattle when the engine is hot and the clutch is depressed. Quiet as a mouse until it heats up though. I am led to believe this is the release bearing. Its slowly getting worse so clearly will need replacing. However, the crux of the matter is that I'm leaving the country for over a year in 2 and a half months time and therefore only need the car to limp by until then. I understand that even with getting mates rates at a local garage and buying the parts myself I'm still looking at £200 minimum to change the clutch. SO, my question is, what would YOU do? Just bite the bullet and get it done, or wait and see if it makes it another 10 weeks? Bearing in mind that its lasted over a year already, and I'm not going to be doing any long distance journeys in it. Thanks in advance guys

First timer!

Hello everyone,

My name is Tommy and I'm an American living in the UK with my wife of 21 years and 6 children.

3 weeks ago we bought a Rover MG ZS 120 on a 52 plate in Trophy Blue.

It was being sold on the side of the road and the only reason I'd seen it for sale was because I'd decided to go a different route than normal to put petrol in our Mazda.

I'd always loved the look of the MG ZS's and ZR's so it immediately caught my eye. It looked in great shape. Paint work had some minor scratches and parking dings. The only thing that stood out was a rust bubble on the bonnet edge just above the passenger side head light. For £400 it seemed a bargain and was listed as "a great runner".

Contacted the guy and he said it was a great car. I was told "it has 150000 miles but at £400 it is what it is". Clearly my appreciation of the model impaired my sensible judgement I usually exercise when buying a used car. I test drove it. There was a noise coming from the drivers side wheel. It sounded very much like a wheel bearing and I thought to myself that it was an inexpensive fix. I bought the car.

The next morning I took it to the garage who investigated the problem. It turned out the wheels only had 3 lug nuts on each wheel and the drivers side front was literally only on by a few remaining threads. I got lucky. All lugs tightened and new lugs bought. £26 all in. I asked them to do a general inspection bumper to bumper for me. They found a water leak at the thermostat housing. Next day I dropped it off to be repaired. The thermostat housing was found to be broken beyond repair. New housing and labor £146. Next day I drove the car 1 mile from our house. Coolant hose explodes and I lose all coolant. I call the garage and they come to my rescue because I was literally 200 yards away. New coolant hose, labor £100. At this point we've owned the car for 7 days. 5 of which it has been in the garage. Next day I'm off to the scrap yard which is 3 miles away. Almost there and I notice the temp gauge is going up. I pull over and wait for 30 mins. I call my wife who calls the garage and they said to bring it in. I limp home stopping 4 times to wait 30 min each time for the car to cool down. 2 hours to go 2 miles. At the garage they do a head gasket test. It turns green. HGF!!

Their advice was to scrap it. 8 days owned, 2 days driven. We named the car MeG (Meg). At this point we are £600 in. I call the wife. She's upset of course but she says, "Don't scrap Meg". We're quoted £400 - £600 for the job. 3 days later we receive a call from the garage. The cylinder head is no good. We still, of course have to pay the £60 it cost to have it tested. 5 days later a new cylinder head is sourced from a scrap yard off of a ZS that had 20000 miles in the clock. All of the coolant hoses are robbed from the engine as well because mine are extremely weak. The cylinder head is sent off to be tested and is given the all clear. Today is the 2 week mark and I'm told Meg should be out of the hospital today our tomorrow. We're really worried about the cost but we believe we have enough in our savings to cover it.

I've since seen many good examples for sale on fleabay that went for little money. Including a couple of very nice 180's with body kits that had low miles.

The moral of this story is that I was ignorant to the inherent problems of HGF with these cars. We've owned the car for 3 weeks and in that time we've driven it for 2 days. I know my ignorance was taken advantage of however the responsibility ultimately lies with me the buyer. I'm normally quite patient when inspecting a used car. In my defence I did check the water level and oil / filler cap and nothing looked untoward.

I've used this time to learn a lot more about Rover MG's. I've come to the conclusion that I'm still very happy to have Meg and I'm quite excited she's coming home within the next day or 2. Though we won't be getting rid of her I will be keeping my eye out for a 180 as and when I can afford it!

Kind regards,

Tommy

A Smell Of Petrol....

Hi Guys

I wonder if you can help.

When the car (MGF 1999) has been stood overnight the first thing that hits you when you open the door is a smell of petrol. Once on the move and with the heating fan on the smell clears ...air being expelled. But if you switch the heater fan off even while travelling at dual carriageway speeds the smell of petrol returns and becomes quite nauseating.

I've checked for leaks with the engine running, engine cover off and I can't see any weeping anywhere. All the connections are dry !!! I thought I might have a leaking petrol tank but I cannot see it.

Can I get access to the tank from inside the car behind the seats or am I missing something or is the charcoal filter responsible.

Thanks

Tone

Suspention Arm replacment problem

Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone has experienced the following:

Over the weekend I replaced the driver’s side suspension arm and rear bush on my 05 MG ZTT.

Knocking sound over bumps, noticeable play in ball joint.

Having owned a 75 CDTi previously I have replaced these arms several times!

With my MG everything went well, too well, the 2 troublesome bolts on the rear bush removed effortlessly, the ball joint into the sub frame one hit with my splitter and it released. With my old 75 I was there for hours with pry bars and 2 splitters.

I knew it was too good to be true.

The new arm and bush fitted was then fitted.

Then I put the wheel back on to check for play, should be solid with new part fitted.

NO!! - Loads of play when I moved wheel up and down. On further inspection I noticed that the lower ball joint is not being held in place properly with the pinch bolt.

You can clearly see the lower ball joint move up and down within the Hub-swivel:

This leaves 3 possibilities:

1. Pinch bolt worn?

2. Hub swivel worn?

3. New suspension arm fault?

Has anyone else experienced this???

1.1 down pipe blanking bolt

I'm wondering if anyone can help me.

I've just purchased a new down pipe for my '96 Rover 100 1.1 GSI.

Where the Lambda sensor screws in there's a thread on the opposite side, where i know there should be a blanking bolt, but this wasn't supplied with the pipe.

I'm not sure what this bolt is called or where i can get one.

Lots of diagrams on sites selling this pipe show this, but no part number.

On Rimmer brothers there is something shown, but is named as exhaust gas sampling, but looks like there's some kind of tube attached to it.

Can anyone tell me if this is the right part?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Problem is - no manuals for it, and I have no idea how to use the exposure meter. The rest of it makes sense of course.

ZR 1.4 Over Heating Issue

Fingers crossed this isn't HG failure, as the head gasket was only done 18 months ago.

Several weeks ago while in heavy stationary traffic my ZR overheated and I lost all the water from the expansion bottle. I did turn the engine of straight away and allowed the engine to cool fully before refilling. Since then no major issues apart from very minor water loss which as been the norm. Then last night I had to travel 55 mile home, and checked the water level before leaving and the bottle was on the max line. After driving 8 mile I hit stationary traffic and within five minutes the engine overheated again. Once again I pulled over and shut the engine down, waited for the engine to cool and filled the bottle up. Waited for the traffic to clear and drove the 50 miles home on the M5 with no issues.

I have checked for water in the oil, and visa versa and all is good. So is this a fault with the thermostat or the fan?

Just want to say bye to all the people who have helped me during the 5 years I have owned my ZTT. Your help and support has been invaluable from day one. I know some members grumble about the forum but it has been great for me. I sold the car on ebay today for almost a grand. I hope the new owner enjoys it as much as I have. It been a great car with surprisingly few niggles (other than the constant fault with the air bag warning light and constant blowing of headlight bulbs!) I have done 100,000 miles in it and it still brings a smile to my face.

Still have the MG6 and my wife still has her TF so we are not abandoning the brand. I hope the 6 proves to be as good a buy as the ZTT.

My girlfriends car is getting harder and harder to start. It's a 2001 Rover 25 1.4

It usually only does this in the cold weather but now the warmer weather is here it's started playing up again...and becoming worse.

Rather than me trying to explain it using words I recorded a video of it in action which I've posted the link to below.

For the first half of the actual attempt to start it my foot wasn't on the throttle pedal and the second half its about half way down. Note that when it does actually fire up the revs stay at 1,000rpm but my foot is still half way on the throttle. It feels at this point rather lumpy so half throttle is still needed to stop it from stalling before it finally clears it's throat, hence the burst to 5,000rpm.

Sorry about the poor sound quality...full volume may be needed to hear it.

He has helped so much with sorting the new bits on my car and is the kind of guy who is great at solving a problem, rather than saying it can't be done (like a lot of mechanics do concerning our beloved MG's). I say this in reference to the problems we had fitting my new Bilstein shocks due to having 'experimental' Mexican suspension parts fitted to my car upon it's release from Longbridge!

A little bit out of Birmingham and surrounding areas, but Andy is well worth a call if you are having mechanical problems or simply need a decent service for a decent cost. Well recommended...

Breaking Mk2 MG ZS 180

Hi guys. I've re made this thread as the last one didnt show correctly for me (not sure if it was the same for anyone else).

Heres my grey zs180 for breaking/spares or repair. I would prefer to sell as is but am willing to break for parts.

MOT has just expired. Just as I moved it onto the drive getting ready to sort its faults out when the clutch slave decided its had enough. To get through an MOT it will need new brakes all round, 2 new rear tyres, battery clamp and a clutch slave cylinder.

It has recently had an oil and filter change along with 2 new front tyres. Current engine sits at 84k miles, however this is its second engine. It had a transplant in the past at 120k miles and the odometer was reset to show current engine mileage. This was prior to my ownership

Currently the inlet is rattling, I have a spare Gutted inlet from a previous zt-t I had with VIS motors. Both pairs of VIS motors work.

It starts and drives fine and the slave cylinder maybe able to hold fluid long enough for a spin up the road. The only bad points are stone chips on the front bumper, a small chip in the front drivers side wheel arch (can see in pics) and a dent in passenger rear door after parking next to the hulk who must have picked up his car with its door open and slammed it against mine, this has also put a small crack in the body kit.

Parts of note:

Spare Gutted inlet (no leaks works as it should) £50

Current rattly inlet £30 but i can gut and seal it for £50

SCU wiring vvc engine conversion

I have a 1.4 mk1 zr that i have removed the engine from, and are currently in the process of putting a 1.8 vvc from a mk2 zr, I have removed the old scu from under the steering wheel on the mk1 a few months ago.

I have just today removed the scu from the donor car and gone to fit it in my mk1. When I removed it from the MK2 it had 4 or 5 wires to disconnect now going to plug it back into the mk1 it has only a large green and a large orange connector.

Is this all I need or am I missing something?

Car is a rally car so has no central locking etc, but runs standard ecu with fob and alarm.

Cam pulley locking up, HELP PLEASE

Hi guys, I have just changed cylinder head on my daughters streetwise 1.4 16v due to the old head having bent valves, when I got the replacement head I noticed that the pulleys had been put on the wrong way so I changed them over before fitting the head, I got the head on but when I try to move the inlet pulley it jams up even with all 4 pistons meeting halfway. any ideas why it would be jamming up would be much appreciated, thanks in advance Andy ps I have the pulleys lined up 3 and 9 oclock reading exhaust in -exhaust in and the crank between the 2 dots at 12 oclock, so I wondered if the guy I got the head from could have put the camshafts back in wrong when he stripped the head

Really cheeky request

Hi

Been watching the forum closely in the last two years of ownership of my zr

As it has always been limited to 5500 rpm, I've tried everything that's within

My skills as in making sure the the solenoids wires are the right way round

And checking the resistance all seem fine I wanted to have a check of the timing

But Im not sure id know what to look at I've read the Haynes manual a millon

Times, now the cheeky bit! Is there anyone near horsham that would maybe have a look and possibly resolve my problem I don't have much money to pay

Otherwise I'd take it to a garage but I'd be willing to do pretty much anything to pay someone for their time ie gardening, painting, I'm a floor layer so could do some flooring in return

Thanks

Ryan

Perplexed at what may be wrong here!

Have a TF with a Kenwood Radio/CD player. Radio only plays thro the LH door speaker. Stripped out RH door card and all looks fine with connections etc. Tried a CD and that plays as it should thro both speakers!!

Clearly speakers are fine and I presume outputs are shared between Radio and CD.......... or not!

Anyone any ideas?

PS I have a bog standard 115, so only 2 speakers.

MG after a polish

Spent some time polishing the car on Friday, used Meguiars paint restorer kit to see if I could remove any lights scratches and the finished off with some auto fineness polish. Here is the results delighted to say the least. Didn't have time to do the black trim as the rain was on its way but think it's still looking decent.

driver side window

ok so my drivers side front window has finally stopped working. Luckly it stopped just below my wind deflector so looks like its closed and will hopefully keep rain out. But from reading whats on here it could be a number of things.

a while ago the window started getting slower when going up, unevenly and screechy. After a while of it being veryvery slow, i decided to remove door card and take a look. didnt see anything to sprayed it with some silicone spray. sorted it nicely and was working great! but very reandomly it kept slowing down then speeding up. tonight, got home pulled the button to make it go up and it just grumbled and sounded bad.. then pushed the button to make it go down and it did. pulled it back up with button again but then nothing. wont go up or down now ... at all.

Is it the relay in the BCU? or motor? or what? im limited on money as im moving house at the moment so cant splash out on a few things it might be or not be...

People, check your sills! Also, Waxoyl tips would be brill, if you've got the time...

So I had, what I thought, was a tiny bit of rust on my o/s/r wheel arch, right where it joins the plastic sill skirt. I saw this went under the skirt, so logically take it off, thinking 'quick job, sand, treat, paint.

How wrong I was...

To be fair, it's not as bad as others that people have posted on here, but the holes for the clips of the skirt have definitely started to rust out well... Needless to say I wasn't particularly happy...

So my message to you all: If you have a 400/45/ZS, PLEASE make sure you have a look under that plastic cover!

So anyway, it's sanding off the rust with a wire wheel drill bit for me, and fibreglassing over the holes it's made.

I've noticed that the inside of the sills are rusting as well (completely expected for a 1996 'bubble' 400 I know), but I want to at least slow it down. Got me some Waxoyl and a pump for it today. Does anyone have any tips on how to spray the inside of the sills etc? Where are the best access points to spray in? are any hidden under the inside carpet, or are they all on the outside and under the chrome footplates?

Any help is good help, (and it's all appreciated)!

Thank you!

Ben

New rear brakes smell

Hi, MG drivers

I need a bit of advice,

I've had my mechanic refit new rear brake discs and pads, and I can smell a continuous burning smell from the rear is this normal and will it fade away, as couple of weeks ago my rear brake caught fire and I had to call the fire brigade and the AA due to the problem my handbrake seized on the rear brakes but didn't take any notice and whilst driving the vehicle seem a bit stiff, and the AA mechanic said it was due to a wheel bearing which has been replaced, if this burning smell isn't normal then I will discontinue driving the MG. I also have the handbrake light on dash while the handbrake is off Thanks

MGF rear brakes binding after new caliper, discs and pads

Hi all

Having a problem with my dads MGF Trophy. OSR brake was binding on. lifted the car up and it looked like the calliper was seized as it didn't move when the hand brake was released compared to the NSR.

Removed discs, pads and OSR caliper. Replaced calliper with remanufactured one by Pagid from Euro Car Parts and rebuilt both sides with new discs and pads after cleaning everything with rotary brush.

Brakes were fine when I went out in it for a test drive but as i was returning the rear brakes have started to bind on to the point that the car would begin to slow down when changing gear!

I am not sure if I have adjusted handbrake properly. I bleed the brake before operating the handbrake but didn't change anything from previously.

Has anyone got any ideas of what it might be and more importantly, how to fix it? Car is fab to drive but at the moment it goes about 2 miles before brakes are binding severely.

Thanks in advance

Mitch

Replacement Wheel Bearings

Hi All,

Both front wheel bearing need replaced on my car. The job itself doesn't look too bad at all however, I just wondered if anyone had any advice on which bearing to get. Euro are doing an "orbis" bearing kit for £28 which seems reasonable.

Does anyone have any experience with orbis bearings?

I believe the preferred option is SKF or similar (I think that's the name anyway).

The car has cost me a lot recently so trying to keep spend to a minimum.

If no one knows about the orbis bearings I may get a pair and let the forum know how it goes.

Thanks,

Ollie

Diesel Autobox problems , AGAIN!!!!

OK, so a while back I put the 75 off the road, too many cars not enough money. Had it in a unit, but it got moved in and out almost daily, after a while the battery went flat as it wasn't getting run enough to charge it up, charged it up and fine, I half heartedly put an ad on here as spares or repairs, didn't really want to get rid of it, but no takers anyway.

Anyway, my son didn't have a car and his employer decided that because he was using the company vehicle to go and pick up his Kids once a week a mile away from home, that he was responsible for the repairs when it broke a spring and needed a tyre, so i said no chance, why don't you take the rover, as in BORROW, it's still mine. You can Tax it, Insure it, and use it. He was happy with that.

So I threw 2 new front tyres on it and chucked it up for an MOT, passed with flying colours, he taxed and insured it and off he went, 2 days later he said, it's stopped and won't start, Off the top of my head and through previous experience, i said, how much fuel is in it, He said 1/4 of a tank, bugger, I said, stick a gallon in it and try it again, he did and off it went, I explained the fault and not to let it below 1/2 a tank until i can fix it.

Another 2 days and, it's not driving right, not changing up, tried it myself for a couple of days, Put it in Drive and once it passes second it drops all drive and has to be restarted before you can get any drive, leave it in 2 and it drives, but obviously wont go past second, ok for very short journeys. Having had problems with the Autobox, and 2 previous, and obviously failed attempts by me to repair it, I said, ok find a box and I will chuck it in, Picked one up off Ebay for just under £200 delivered. Noticed that the Autobox Oil cooler under the N/S headlight, was quite mucky, stripped it out while the Subframe and box were out and cleaned it up with a jet wash and some air, took the fan off and free'd it up as it was stuck and not running, got it running, but it's a bit noisy, and also noticed that the temperature sensor on the cooler was broken, now I'm wondering if this has been a possible cause of the problems I had with the box, The fluid always smelt burnt whenever i drained any off so I will get a temperature sensor and throw that in ASAP, about £33 new from rover, then I will check the fan is working properly.

Box in and car driving like a dream again, but now the heater fan has stopped working, I checked the fan itself, and it's good, so I went for the usual suspect, the heater resistor pack, picked up a used one for £15, and put it in, fan ran for a day, now it won't go again, but i have just read on the forum of a similar fault, and that was traced to the relay under the bonnet, so I will have a look at that when he gets home
