K series engine ecu type?

I am helping a friend fit a 1.8 K series in a Mini Clubman!

The engine is from a breakers ( sad to learn of the demise of a MGF, but think of it as a heart transplant ) and we think it was from a 2000/1 MGF.

It has the twin coil packs on top of the plugs and plastic inlet manifolds.

So we think this is a 120bhp unit.

Would this engine use the Mems2 ECU or the Mems3?

Some information on line suggests that the twin coil pack was brought in with the Mems3 ECU. Is this so?

We have the associated ECU, immobiliser and wiring loom for the engine.

Also the instrument panel.

I am trying to work out which connections we need to marry the engine loom to the Mini loom so I need to positively identify which type of ECU we have.

Is it possible that there may be somebody out there with a wiring diagram for this kind of conversion?

Not sure if it's linked but on Friday, I had new tyres fitted on the front. Drove home with no issues. Started the car tonight and ABS light stayed on. The speedo isn't working either. Are they both driven from a front hub and could something have been disturbed? It's the only thing I can think of

Grounded - how bad can it be?

had a total disaster today. I was driving my 75 down a country lane and needed to let an oncoming vehicle come by, and the car literally fell off theedge of the road. Heard a big bang, and the car was totally stuck in the mud in the side of the road. left wheel spun like crazy with right wheel not moving at all on the road.

Finally dug myself out using an old plastic tray in the back of the car, but found the tyre had burst. Hopefully that was most of the noise I heard, and maybe not metal grounding. So I put the spare on and drove home. Car was pulling to the left (the side it went down the road), but no noticeable noises or anything. Even at speed seemed largely ok apart from the pull to the left. Suspension seems to work fine when rocked up and down too.

When i got home i saw the tyre had low pressure in it, and the tread was low. This was also a steel spare not an alloy. How likely is it that this is possibly a large part of it pulling to the left? I'm assuming it will have stuffed the tracking, but how bad can this get? Is suspension damage likely?

Worst timing ever as in 4 hours my car goes on a sorn break so I can't even get it to a garage to be checked out! I'd just gone out for 1 last pleasure drive with my pride and joy. Guess that back fired....

I have been helping out on an MGTF VVC head gasket replacement job and need some help in determining which of the solenoids on the VVC hydraulic unit is the Increase solenoid. Is it the one nearest to the main aluminium body of the hydraulic unit or is it the second solenoid further away from the aluminium body and beside the locking nut?

The two connectors are set up that they can go to either solenoid but would obviously cause the hyd unit to work in the opposite way if they were incorrecly connected.

No reply to my e-mail and when I tracked down their phone number and called them they said they would get back to me in a few minutues with a proposed price for at least 5 of them, min pder number for customs it seems, but that was last Thursday afternoon and no call and no e-mail.............................. seems they don't want the business :crying:.

Anyone know of a manifold manufacturer who might listen and does not want a price that suggests the item is made of pure platinum .

Not starting

Hello all, need help again.....

My car isn't starting, the problem started on Tuesday, the pump wasn't priming. I'm in a hotel that's not really in walking distance of a garage or a Halfords even but I managed to order new pump and relay from eBay and bought a cheap socket set.

I changed the relay first, started ok, ran a bit lumpy but I assumed it was because I disconnected the ecu so I reset that, put it back together and it happened again, back to square one, pump not priming. Changed the pump, started first time, took it for a drive no problems.

Went back to the hotel, showered changed and went back to the car and again not starting. The pump primes sometimes and not others but either way it just turns over and won't start.

I have limited tools and no multimeter. Is there anything else I can try before I fork out to get it towed to a garage? I'm also conscious I have no way to charge the battery so I'm worried about turning it over to much.

Thanks in advance :)

So of I trot in the works van and low and behold theyve used bright blue coolant mixed with the OAT.

Reeeaaallly Rounded Wheel Nut

So, I'm having a bad time at the moment. I replaced the engine tie bar bushes with polybushes from B&G and they might as well be made of mahogany for all the resilience they have. Then the vibration this surges through the car breaks the fan resistor pack resistors and I lose fan speeds 1 and 2. Then have a diffuse vibration through the car at 40 mph so I have all the wheels balanced and find a rear alloy has a buckled inner rim and crack in the rim...

The wheel balancing doesn't help the vibration (possibly binding brake) but today, since I had alternator belt squeal, I tried to take the rear o/s wheel off to get to the alternator belt, but one nut refuses to budge with the brace. I try a 19mm socket. It just graunches round. The socket, when finally removed, proudly carries the chrome nut cover inside as a trophy.

So I change to 18mm direct to the steel wheel nut now exposed and that rounds too. So I hammer on an 11/16 and that rounds too. So I hammer on a 17mm and THAT rounds too.

I think you can see the problem here.

So is it an Irvine Nut Extractor set purchase tomorrow or is there a clever way to get a nut off that is rounded smoother than a journal bearing?

Hi all,

I've got an annoying problem whereby the little cap on the end of the ignition barrel has come loose and falls out. I want to change the barrel as its a right PITA to get the key in when the little rollers drop in the absence of the cap. It appears that the part I need is this:

But I'm wondering about using a used part to save a few quid! The rimmers site suggests that the newer cars use a different barrel to the older cars, is that the case or can I fit one from any ZS/45? (This was I can get the door lock as well which would be good!)

Finally, any pointers on removing the old barrel and replacing would be appreciated.

the two wire's that are hanging in next pic are the wires that connected to the cut wires from pektron unit joined into main loom which left the two cut wires from pektron going nowhere.

Also there are wires running into plug that go's to window ecu from under the steering wheel cowling shown in next two pics

Do i have to (don't know how) retract the HCU piston again before i put the head on the engine (using N series HG and uprated oil rail plus new bolts, of course). Btw i didn't have had a HGF, i dismantled the engine head due to sealing issues (car was not running for 6 years when bought and all camshaft seals etc. were leaking more than my MGB engine). break disc LR blokked by hand brake

I noticed while driving that my rear left wheel is not turning freely and is delayed by the break disc. The disk runs very hot. The last service 20k ago the garage already had to fix this but apparently the same problem came back. Has anyone got the same experience with this? I looked at the cable underneath the car and it has a lot of bends around the axle. The rear right is cool and wheel is running freely.

Is it a closed system or can the be dirt inside the cable. I don't use it much but perhaps of the winter/cold weather/rain etc the cable if not moving freely anymore? Any solution to avoid having it done every 20k kms?

My papier mache exhaust heat shield is finally giving up the ghost - it has been cable-tied in place for a while now, and last summer I cut it back to clean it up. Now its falling off. I wonder if its the sort of thing I could ask someone who can work metal to reproduce in stainless or something? Or is it not worth the effort? (and I should just get another papier mache one and bodge it in??)

Thanks for any thoughts.

ZS questions

Hello all. As my Haynes hasn't arrived yet, could someone please help with a couple of questions I have :

Does the ZS (180 specifically) Mk1 have heated mirrors ?

Does anyone sell near side door handles ? I've seen loads of offside advertised but no passenger side ones. Alternatively, does anyone have one N/S front preferably in Trophy Blue ? How hard is it to replace these anyway ?

Are the 180 interiors exclusive ? My son-in-law-to-be needs a drivers side seat complete, or back only, or cover only. Mint condition, of course :hysteria: with blue inserts.

Has anyone perfected gas struts for the saloon bootlid yet ?

WTF memorial mass...

We meet here today to honour and pay tribute to the life of WTF, and to express our love and admiration, or contempt and disgust for him. Also to try to bring some comfort to those of his family and friends who are here and have been deeply hurt by his sudden passing.

WTF wasn't a particularly religious person, so it's befitting that this ceremony should reflect what he was, ...... a gentle, .....kind, ......loving person; devoted to his family of eco modders.

Its only natural that we should be sad today, because in a practical sense, WTF is no longer a part of our lives.

"We must die, we know" said a character in Shakespeare, " tis but the time and drawing days out that men stand upon", and so we all come to ponder the life and death of a truly wonderful petrol head with confused and mixed feelings.

For we have a powerful sense of loss; combined with a recognition that; if death must come, its as well that its not unduly prolonged, we don't want to see someone we love suffer, so this sorrow; and our sense of the fitness of things; don't sit easily together, one purpose of our proceedings here today; is in some way to try to reconcile those feelings.

Today is also a day for memories, today will be remembered for many reasons, but mainly I hope it will be remembered by you all; as a very special day, a special day in which you shared some time with others; in order to pay your last respects; and to say both mentally and physically; a sad and fond farewell to a wonderful man, ....a man whom we were all so very privileged to have known.

May WTF rest in peace.... And his spirit live on in the hearts of those who truly cared and appreciated his efforts.

ZS TD Thermostat Oring

Hi Gents,

I changed my thermostat on saturday and after a bit of head scratching (how to get top elbow bolt undone).

So i went to put it all back together and noticed there was no replacement oring (for the housing/elbow) with the new thermostat. The original one has swollen to buggery and wont go back in and does look a bit flat.

In the past week i've tried loads of places that i can think of (Motor Factors, Vospers, Rimmer Bros, MG Owners Club) for a replacement with no luck!

How bloody stupid that i cant buy something as silly as an oring. So now i have a car stuck car on the driveway. Ideally i'd like to buy the proper oring rather than make/scarf joint from a kit.

Does anyone know the ID & cross section, or could measure, an unused item so i can source one from BSL/Eriks?

The housing is almost 61.95mm OD and the lip on the cooler is ~56.4mm, but it appears the original oring is 4mm in diameter which doesn't add up?

Any thoughts welcome..... I'll make a list of stuff needed to make the job a bit easier after it goes back together.

My MG ZT-T diesel is not charging properly, noticed the battery was going flat and when trying to start just clicking, my immediate thoughts are it was a faulty battery so jst to make sure started the car and put a voltmeter across terminals for readings. The charging voltage at idle was onlt 12.4v, so i wired in a voltmeter to measure the voltage whilst driving and with fan, lights etc turned on. The maximum it charges at is 12.9v with nothing on, with sidelights it is around 12.7v with heater fan blowing 12.2v. Now it is obviously an alternator fault but any ideas what? rectifier, regulator? Best part is the wife has exactly the same problem on her Ford Focus but I am in the process of rebuilding an alternator for that as I have a spare.

rover 45 tdi problems

well ive given up my search on a 620 ti and ended up buying a silver rover 45 tdi on 03 plate that is very very tidy but has a few gremlins.

1) how noisey is the l series as this thing sounds like a ford transit   im assuming this is pump timing solenoid

2) she isnt hitting anywhere near peak boost at 3.5k im seeing 11.7psi but at 1800rpm as low as 4 is this weak acuator or screwed maf?

fuel economy seems fine, no smoke on start up or when running just seems low on power and next to noticeable pull from turbo scanned for fault codes and got nothing all clear, unplugged maf made no difference apart from 4k rev limit

another issue is it strugles like hell to accelerate up a hill (not good seeing as I have to go up hill every morning to join a motorway) other than that it seems fine.

hoping it isnt ought to serious as bought her to mix the zs/45 bits and add a bit of vag euro style to her aswell as body work is immaculate

Overheating Problem

Hey guys

This problem has seriously done my head in i hope you can help..... i have an MGZR 2005 1.4 105+

Last week my car started to overheat and noticed bubbling from the expansion tank and lost my heaters. so the first thing i thought was my thermosat so i changed that, still over heated and bubbles. so i had a spare head gasket so changed this head skimmed etc put it back together still over heated. so i took it down to the garage for some tests. all come back fine pressure test fumes test etc, they did not know the problem and was going to change what i have already done. ive checked the water pump all seems fine there.... the radiator hose gets hot but not the heater pipes when press the pipes over and over the water goes down so i thought there might be a blockage somewhere so i took all the pipes off from the heater matrix flushed the radiator etc still no luck.... if its a air lock its a bloody good one but the expansion return does not seem to return problem i.e pumping the coolant around properly but i dont no.

so here we are i have no clue where to go from here am out of ideas...

Help! lol

Rover 25 HGF again!!!

Hi Guys I know this thread has been brought up many times but I have a specific question where I can find an answer within the forum?

I had a HGF last year and upgraded the headgasket and had the cylinderhead skimmed and checked, everything was working lovely until the bottom hose came loose and dumped all the coolant on the motorway which in turn overheated the engine. Recently I've noticed the coolant level has been going down, I think I have another HGF ??

It's done about 1500 miles since the last headgasket change. Do I need to have the cylinderhead re skimmed and checked?? I can't really afford to have it off the road for too long.

Appreciate any feedback and thanks in advance guys!

On 7TH Oct 2014 I bought a replacement work van,the van was taxed but as of 1st Oct 2014 under the new rules I could not drive the van on the road without taxing it this I did online, and as a bonus to HM government the van was now taxed twice for the same month!!!!.

Today my van was legally parked on a housing estate,as I came back to the van a white van pulled up and 2 men with reflective jackets got out 1 went to the front of the van and I asked what he was doing he stated that the van was not taxed, turns out they where a clamping unit from VOSA and wanted to clamp the van as it had shown up on the ANPR as not taxed, fortunately they were not the usual jobs worths and were happy for me to show them the email from DVLA on my phone proving that I had taxed the van and suggested that I contact DVLA.

I phoned DVLA to be told that they had cancelled the tax and could give no reason why, when,or who by,but they had a record of me taxing the van and would "reinstate the tax as a priority" had I arrived later the van would have been clamped leaving me with huge problem to sort out and being self employed would have cost me in lost time and earnings.

Anyone know what happened to these custom inlet manifolds?

I've seen a few of these pics before but does anyone know what happened to these custom manifolds, was there ever any results posted?

First is this one which most of us have seen:

And then there's this interesting looking one which I've only just seen:

Not claiming to be an expert on the subject but I have done a bit of reaserch into inlet manifold design - the first one isn't bad, short runners and large plenum which from what I've read is ideal for our engines, it would benefit from some velocity stacks to smooth out air flow into the runners but apart from that looks like it would be an improvement over the standard one and relatively easy to make.

The 2nd design however is probably not ideal, no plenum and very long runners, but as I said I'm no expert so could be wrong. Interesting design though.

Does anyone know if anything ever came of them, suppose they're either scrapped or sat collecting dust in somebody's shed now?

SAIC has received more orders for Electric cars

SAIC Motor Corp. received an order for 1,000 electric cars and plug-in hybrids last week from a Shanghai supplier of battery charging equipment that plans to start a car-rental business.

SAIC says it will fill the order with Roewe E50 small electric cars and Roewe 550 compact plug-in hybrid sedans. The buyer, STGCON New Energy Technology Co., supplies battery chargers and related components, as well as battery charging posts and stations for electrified vehicles.

In addition to supplying the vehicles, SAIC pledged to build EV charging stations with STGCON in major Chinese cities.

The deal is SAIC's second major purchase order for electrified vehicles. Last August, eHi Car Services Co., a Shanghai car rental company, bought 1,000 units of the Roewe E50 and Roewe 550 plug-in hybrid.

Last year, state-owned SAIC sold 180,018 cars including EVs and plug-ins under its Roewe and MG brands, down 22 percent from 2013. The Shanghai company has yet to disclose separate sales mumbers of its EVs and plug-in hybrids for last year.

In addition, SAIC has joint ventures with General Motors and Volkswagen Group. It also runs a microvan joint venture with GM in the southwest China city of Liuzhou.

I've taken each HT lead off with the engine running and each cylinder drops out when the lead comes off. So can't be the HT leads.

I'll look at the spark plugs today for any deposits etc

I also have coolant leak down the back of my engine which only started Saturday. Could a failed inlet manifold gasket cause a misfire?

Thanks Steve

exhaust back boxes?

Does anyone know if all 600 rear silencers are the same? I need a new exhaust for my 623 and wondered if a backbox for a 620 will fit as they seem to be a bit cheaper on ebay and dont look different. I already bought a new downpipe and centre section so just need to get rear silencer and then i can fit the whole lot.

MG ZR Engine Conversion - Different Engines

Recently I have rarely come across a rover t16 turbo engine.

I have had a look around various forums and have not managed to come by any other engine conversions except from the usual t16 or one or two 1.8 turbo conversions.

What would be the possibility of fitting a saab engine to the car ?

Selling up :(

Well, I've been offered the chance to buy my friends Mk4 Golf Gti for a very reasonable £800. It has a full scorpion cat back exhaust, has a revo remap to approx 200 bhp, larger front intercooler, 18 inch BBS alloys with brand new tyres and coilovers. it was mostly resprayed last year and looks fantastic. It has been his labour of love for 4 years, but a change in his domestic situation means he needs something more family friendly. It would have been rude not to at that price.

I've really enjoyed owning my second ZR, they are such great little cars, but this is too good an opportunity to miss. I will be sad when the wee man goes...

Thanks for all the advice and help guys, it's been greatly appreciated!

ZS Coilovers

As above, a set of 4 GAZ coilovers for the ZS for sale

It is to be noted that these are in a poor condition, one of the coilovers has leaked (the one with the captive nut on the bottom) and one of the little top hat things has worn through (i used a washer either side of it which worked fine, but is not ideal)

Other 3 shocks have not leaked though the bodies are very rusty, have not attempted to move the adjusters as they would need a good wire wheeling down beforehand, all damper adjustment wheels work, though the one is missing its + - sticker

All springs are included and are in good condition (little to no rust, coatings still intact) brand new top nuts included aswell

These things cost nearly £800 new, i am asking £50

New MG book, from the start to the 80's

I just thought some peeps might be interested in this, i have no commercial interest in the book, just thought someone might like to see it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The MG, from being a Morris car modified in the corner of a backstreet workshop, evolved into a sports car in its own right. The demand for this fiery little car caused the production to move to four different and progressively larger sites in and around Oxford, finally moving out of the city ten miles away to Abingdon and a factory that might have been custom built for it.

This factory was on the site of a tannery that had inflated to over twice its size catering for the 1914-18 wartime demand for its leather products. The coming of peace caused it to deflate back to its previous level of production, leaving empty the rows of large hangars that had housed the wartime production effort.

It was to this factory that Cecil Kimber, who had resigned his position as Managing Director of Morris Garages, brought his brain-child that he called the MG. Twin rows of eighteen inch (45cm) high raised tracks were built. The chassis was brought from the workshop where it been made and, after the assembling of its suspension, it was mounted on to the track to start its journey from one stage to the next, finally emerging as a complete motor car.

The car would then be tested on the factory s own test track before being deemed fit for its eagerly awaiting new owner. The men who took part in the assembling of the car were but a part of the organisation that went toward the finished article. Managers, Office staff, Storemen, Inspectors, Painters, Test drivers, Labourers and cleaners were all members of the great team, all had their part to play.

As they worked together so did they play together, ground was obtained for a football pitch, room was found in the town for a snooker club and a place where the men could join for a well earned drink This later developed into a modern Sports Club with football, hockey and cricket pitches. The risk of fire in the factory was always present and to cope with this the factory had its own fire engine and a full time fireman augmented when needed by a volunteer crew of factory workers, who trained in their spare time.

MG Abingdon‘s famous racing reputation gained in the 1930s made it the obvious place to site BMCs Competition department with its maiden venture the 1955 Le Mans 24 hour race. The 160, many never seen before, pictures in this book chronicle every aspect of the factory from its opening amidst great euphoria in 1930 to its closing amidst great recriminations in 1980.

PRESS RELEASE - MG Crowned BTCC Champion by JEAN TODT at FIA Gala dinner

  • MG crowned 2014 MSA British Touring Car Championship Manufacturer at MSA Night of Champions

  • Trophy presented by FIA President Jean Todt

  • Plans confirmed to defend title in 2015 with Triple Eight, Andrew Jordan and Pirtek

  • MG also fastest growing automotive brand in 2014

  • Major expansion of MG dealer network

MG joined the elite of British motor sport at the MSA Night of Champions, to celebrate winning the 2014 MSA British Touring Car manufacturer trophy.

The event, held at the prestigious Royal Automobile Club on London’s Pall Mall, was hosted by broadcasters Steve Ryder and Louise Goodman. Alan Gow, Chairman of the Motor Sports Association (MSA) welcomed the winners whilst FIA president Jean Todt and Formula 1 and motorcycling legend John Surtees crowned the champions of UK motor sport’s most prestigious titles.

Jean Todt presented MG with the 2014 MSA British Touring Car Championship manufacturer trophy following a thrilling year of racing that saw the Triple Eight Racing works MG6GTs defeat four times champions Honda.

Victory in the BTCC completed a fantastic 90th anniversary year for MG that saw the iconic brand become the fastest growing automotive brand in the UK, with sales increasing 361% over 2013. A major expansion of the national dealer network played a key part in the sales growth, with an additional 24 new dealers in locations across the UK including Glasgow, Newcastle, Leicester, Coventry, Bicester, Brecon, Norwich, West London, Swindon, Maidstone, Exeter, Falmouth and Newtownabbey and Bangor in Northern Ireland. Further new dealers are already in the process of being appointed in 2015.

The MG6 also performed on the road receiving major accolades from its customers, who voted it Best Handling car in the 2014 Auto Express Driver Power survey. The MG brand was also voted the third best brand to own in Britain’s largest car owner survey.

After receiving the trophy from Jean Todt, Matthew Cheyne, Head of Marketing for MG, said: “I am delighted to be celebrating this achievement and the fact that we have just successfully completed the negotiations to return and defend our title in 2015 with Triple Eight Racing.

“The team and drivers did a great job in 2014 to secure the manufacturer title for MG and with Andrew Jordan and Pirtek already on board this year; we are looking forward to challenging for both the drivers and manufacturers titles in 2015.”

Tilted driver seat

The front driver seat is tilted to the centre console. When fitting the seat the rail was loose and you can rotate it. Then we found a little spring on the ground that was holding the rail to the seat tightly. The problem is that anything should be distorted because the seat was tilted in the car I took it from. I saw this after fitting seats in my rover.

Here is the pic to show you what am I talking about. You can see that the seat is touching the console.
