MG ZS 180 MK2 Ignition Blue

Well I've finally got round to looking at my summer project.

I'm trying to ensure my 180 is perfect mechanically and electrically for next pride of long bridge meet.

I've given her a full major service.

the only thing that I thought may have been fixed in the service that wasn't (think I was trying to be over positive about this) is the fact that there seems to be a slight electrical fault on start up.

This fault hasn't recorded any fault codes.

what happens is if the car is started straight away (before the immobilizer is activated) it starts first time.
If you leave the car once unlocked and you sit in and wait for the immobilizer to activate then it won't play. the engine turns over as long as the key is turned and just won't actually fire.
it's like it's starved of fuel cam sensor fault for example. if you press unlock on the fob and start it with immobilizer off then no problem again.

the other thing is if you let the fuel pump finish it's prime before turning the key this also makes it turn over for ever and not fire up.

I went on a run to scotland in december with the car and it died i got lambda sensor error, low fuel pressure and random multiple misfire this coupled with the fact that i noticed a big surge in performance after brimming the tank helped me diagnose fuel pump failure after checking the flow rate of the pump.

so what is left can't be a fueling issue although if the pump stops priming then it wont fire up.

I'm starting to think it may be dreaded electric problems but just wondered if anyone else has any thoughts before I investigate further?

Regards,

Chris

Fluid Leak around Passenger side front drive shaft?

Replacing the brake fluid and came across this on the front passenger side driveshaft.

The fluid looks to be sprayed in a circular pattern perpendicular to the end of the rubber boot.

I've had a Google and the closest thing I can find is it being a driveshaft / differential oil seal? It's had three clutches (don't ask) and for the last two the driveshafts were removed without the seals being replaced.

If it is the above - is it something easily DIY-able? RAVE makes it looks ok except for the gearbox oil and using a special tool to remove the driveshaft.

Horn sounding randomly

Just acquired a very nice 2005/6 MG TF and really enjoying it, but have an annoying problem.

When the car is parked and unattended, every now and then (maybe hours apart) the horn will sound a single blast. There doesn't seem to be any alarm activation going on and the car is starting and driving perfectly otherwise.

Any ideas what might be causing it ?

For now the recently aquired Classic SE CDT is running on my spare Crowns that have 205/65 R15 Winter tyres on them. However we really need to in the fairly near future get some normal all season/summer treads.

So looking on varous sites I see Black Circles has Avon ZV7's at a very reasonable price fitted so am considerign these for her.

Your thoughts and input is most welcome.

Battery light flashing!

Just replaced cambelt and bits after near catastrophe with crank pully dropping off.

Everything back together, but when starting the engine, the battery light goes off for a few seconds, then starts flashing!

This is a very repetitive flashing, and does not seem random, such as a slipping belt would cause. It seems a "controlled" flashing!

Car started fine, but after a short spin the battery was dead and would not start car.

battery is now on charge and will see if this resolves the problem.

It is likely the battery was low on charge, but has anyone experience of this flashing battery light?

Possible new project - 1.4 to 1.6 Conversion

The Mrs is after a different car after her Astra decided to throw
out vague fault codes to problems we have no idea to fix. I have
managed to convince her to come back to ROVER as there cheap
and easy to fix and run.

Found a desperately cheap 1.4 25 but she hate the lack of power
but after driving my latest 1.6 project and my 1.6 Cabby she said
she would be happy with the 1600 engine, guess the spanners
will be coming out again then.

I vaguely remember that you can just drop in a 1.6 and use the
same gearbox and ECU, just a straight swap, would be great if
someone could confirm this.

Dealership target

We often see quoted the target of getting to 100 dealers. Great when it happens but it currently seems to be one step forwards and then one backwards.

The news of a new dealership opening in Bradford is welcomed, but the loss of dealerships in Plymouth and Newcastle sort of cancels this out.

With MG now offloading cars through Motorpoint so that Motorpoint can sell them at less than a dealer is expected to payis only going to put off any dealerships that are considering taking on a franchise.

Thoughts please.

Boot leaks

Boot leaks

I know this subject has been done heaps of times before but just finally tracked down a leak point which I was lucky to find.
On the drivers side rear quarter panel inside the boot there is a plastic box (a bit hidden if you have reversing sensors as the electronic box is in front of it.) which is an air vent and has 3 small flaps which keep the water out but allows air in.
Had a look at it and it appeared slightly dislodged,at the bottom so pushed it back thinking it would all be good, but not so.
Pulled the box out to find the top flap not sealing as it had become obstructed by a clip on the bumper and the rubber seal around the box had a couple of suspect points.
The leak would cover the flat panel on the side of the boot and eventually would drain down into the spare tyre area.
Siliconed up the seal around the box and all is well.
Unless you knew it, it almost looks like it was a leak from either the tail light or one of the chrome strip clips.

Towbar fitting

I hope this may be of use to others who want to fit a tow-bar to an MG3.

I ordered the bar from the online MG shop as it comes with the correct electrics (more on this later).
It arrived next day. MG have made no secret that it is a Witter bar, it comes in a Witter box with Witter fittings. The ball assembly is what Witter call a fixed flange i.e. you need tools to remove it.
The electrics kit is labelled as MG3 / MG6, and the instructions are only MG6.

Fitting the bar itself is quite straight forward, the instructions are easy to follow – after working out how to remove the rear bumper! MG advise cutting a 50mm diameter hole in the bumper, I only had a 54mm hole saw, but this is better as with 50 there would be insufficient space for the electric cable. Also the distance from the edge of the bumper (140mm ), is from the original line of the plastic, mine has been cut away to clear the towing eye. But all the bolts line up so no issues with fit. You do need to fit the electric cable before refitting the bumper.

I'm having having a small problem with the electrics not disabling the parking sensors. Once I've resolved this I'll write up the rest of the installation. Suffice it to say that I think it best to work on the right hand side of the car, not the left as per the instructions. The Park Distance Control box is there – it must be on the left in a 6. It also mean you don't need to drill another hole for the trailer wire as you can use the existing wiring grommet, just cut a hole in the rubber for it to pass through.

LMCFox [Need a replacement rear screen]

I got a replacement vinyl screen from a lady called (I think) Silvia, in Middlesex, possibly Ilford? You send yours away and get it back repaired by return of post. It's Special Delivery so not too long a turnaround. I saw her name mentioned on here back in the day and just Googled for it.

It was about £90 back then (several years ago), you get rivets and a bit of Velcro and a new zip clasp thingy (if you need it) with the returned rear window.

You do have to drill out the rivets to remove the rear window panel. Plus, you have to rivet it back in (along the bottom). It wasn't the most difficult job I've ever done, I reckon it took about two hours of my time all told, not including sending the rear window off then collecting it. I borrowed a rivet gun but they don't look expensive. Skill level is not 'Absolute Beginner', but it's not 'Ninja' either, it would suit someone with some common sense and some reasonable amount of mechanical/craft skills.

Pre-MoT Check up on latest MG ZT-T acquisition.

Although the car has a current MoT until 30th November, I took advantage of the offer of £25 for an MoT with the firm I now use. I explained that I want a full MoT on the car which is still a bit of an unknown quantity. Just in case the check reveals some safety issue in need of attention. I stressed I did not want it logged. Incidentally, as the £25 was NOT for the actual MoT Test, it was subject to VAT so cost me £30.... Even so money well spent as although it revealed several minor MoT fails, two bulbs including front offside dipped beam, nothing serious. There was some emissions problems that confirmed as I expected, due to the poor state of the rear silencer. Here's images of the car and the Silencer. They allowed me to take a range of pictures of the underside of the car whilst it was high up on the ramps. Took twenty in all which when magnified on my LapTop, are very informative about the car's condition.

Here's the car after the check-up.

This rear silencer is well past it's sell by date ...

I also took along a set of recently refurbished 18" Hairpins from my Le Mans Green MG ZT ... in brilliant white which I think are brilliant. They fitted new valves and the tyres for a total of £20 which I think is reasonable. They were careful with the freshly refurbished wheels too which is good service.

Jobs for a Long Weekend

I am lucky enough to have a few days off work so have a long weekend so will undertake a few jobs on the old 1995 MGF including a service (oil, filters, plugs 'etc'). I am also treating her to 2 new rear tyres, I am thinking Toyo's (I know there are views on these but I will ensure they are both from the same factory) as there seems to be some bargains out there including fitting!

One other job I want to do is pump up the Spheres on the off side as they are a little low, I can't see any signs of leakage and they have not been done for some years. I have called at quite a few garages around the Liverpool area and no one seems to have the equipment to do it, I have also emailed several garages who have been recommended to me by other garages however, they have not responded (obviously do not need the custom). I have checked the hydro-gas register and there is only one place listed in St Helens so hoped there would be one a bit nearer to me in South Liverpool?

Has anyone used a local garage around the Liverpool area they could recommend?

Finally, she will be treated to a full wash, wax, polish..the full works Cheers, Kenny

New ROVER 25 Project for my Dad - (Great time to buy a 25)

DAY 2 - Fixing the NigglesGot up early to get cracking, the car needs a major internal and external
clean but I really could not be bothered, just wanted to get the screw
drivers out and raid my spare parts stash to fix the niggles.

Front indicators
I replaced the drivers side and replaced the bulb, major paint overspray
and it was generally dingy, the passenger side cleaned up with brake
cleaner.

Numberplates
I removed the front plate, covered in overpsray and it was original, as was
the rear but it was badly delaminated and looked awful.

Parcel Shelf
The shelf has a broken lug and it has been like that for some time sagging
into the boot and has ended up bent into an odd shape so I replaced it
with my old shelf from my 25, its been in the garage for 12 years lol.

WIRING WOES
The previous owner had an upgraded sound system as there are signs they
have removed it, badly, only one front speaker works and the rear speaker
wiring has been mullered, I fixed the wiring as the plugs were missing but
the speakers have been blown, so the head unit had popped them and the
speakers were replaced, they have wired LED's into the side light feed but
used tape, they have been removed and the wires soldered and heat shrink
applied, the bootlight wiring was also cut to bits and the light itself was
missing, I fixed the wiring and fitted a switched lamp unit with a 21w bulb
as the 10w doesn't cut it, plus its switched so you can use it as required.

Radio & Speakers
The original radio was long gone, in its place is something that has just
been thrown in, some random Panasonic jobby with no surround, I took it
out and threw in my 25X's original proper factory ROVER Blaupunkt, looks
miles better, sounds great through the one working speaker lol.

I will be fitting the the rear speakers out of my 25X, they are still in place
as I use them when I remove the MDF shelf with the JBL meadly in them
but they are redundant 99% of the time, just need to investigate the
drivers speaker.

MISC Dash Bits
Asides the head unit I also fitted a heater speed control knob, it was not
there for some random reason, the metal clip was there so I popped it off
and fitted it into a spare knob without one, speed 3 is not working so that
will be a jobs for next week, I have one resistor kit left so happy days.

No cigar lighter insert, again the parts bin is fruitful, fitted it, tested it, the
thing got to temp then flew out into the passenger footwell lol, as the
centre console need to come out to fit and new gear gaiter which is tatty
I will fit a 12v socket as no bugger smokes these days, shame really as the
bulb still works.

Lights and Bulbs
The bulbs didn't work in the following items, I have fixed them all.

Front and Rear sidelights, front N/S and rear O/S were out, I have loads of
LED bulbs lying about so I fitted 9 SMD chip Warm White 501's to the front
lights and 19 SMD chip Red LED bulbs to the rear, looks OEM but nice and
bright.

Bootlight (The light itself was missing)

Main Interior Light (No bulb fitted, was probably LED and removed)
I fitted a nice bright cool white 48 LED panel I had lying around.

Numberplate lights, they were wet inside from the dent in the bootlid, lots
of blue corosion, only one was working, I cleaned up all the contacts, dried
out the seals and wiped the lenses, I popped in a couple of used but nice
and clear glassed bulbs, will pop in warm white LED's once the dent is
fixed.

The Clock bulb, Hazard Bulb and Front Fog bulb were all out, I had loads
of spare grain of rice bulbs left over from LED conversions, I will tweek
them more over time but the dash fully lights now.

Weird Boot Lid Rattle
As it says, the lid rattled, I removed the internal trim and found a brass
bolt inside, it was one of the 3 holding the wiper motor, I refitted it but
one is still missing, it was probably de-wipered or replaced at some point
but I will find a bolt in my fixings tubs but for now its solid.

MISC Bits
Under the bonnet is mint and very tidy, the fuel filter looks new and the oil
is a good colour, engine is well serviced, I will do a minor service next week
once the bits arrive, the airbox is in place and all the original clips are still
there so no indiction kits have been fitted by the looks of it, I took out the
resonator tube, just coz I can OK !

The power steering and coolant labels were missing, I had spares, looks
much better with them.

MISSING TRIMS
Tweeter Covers (LeRich is on the case)
Front Door Handle Covers (Will dig out spares in my pile)
Door Lock Pin Trims (Need all 4, anyone help ?)
Passenger Seat Mech Lower Cover (I have one, somewhere)
Rear Parcel Shelf Lug Seat Metal Retaining Clip (Again anyone got one ?)
Most the boot carpet clips but I have spares

NEXT LIST OF JOBS
Where to start, lots to do but asides the clutch nothing major.

Clutch kit fitted.

Oil & Filter
Air and Pollen Filter
NGK Platinum Plugs and New Leads
Air Con Leak Check and Regas

MAJOR valet, might do a separate thread on detailing the car just to see if
you can polish a turd, yes I know Mythbusters say yes but you know what
I mean lol.

Any comments, hints, tips, suggestions, help, spare parts and general "you
were ripped off" ribbings are most welcome, I will post up updates soon.

Extra In-Box Space

Following on from MG John's topic 'here' I think its time to expand the
PM box for non-supporters, lets be honest here, non-supporters are
the majority on this forum, yes the paid up members get space for 200
for being paid up but the site is not as enticing as it used to be and
people are unwilling to pay the £12 a year so how about just giving us
an inbox capacity of 20 or 30 as it is a pain to moderate some days.

I still think the £12 should be reduced to £5 a year, more people would
pay up for the 12 months in my opinion, but that is another story, plus
the lack of a 'Welcome Pack' in the post or at the least a sticker of
some kind makes it less enticing than on other forums.

Motorpoint alert!

Most of the new cars that go through Motorpoint will either be imports in weird specs or models that manufacturers are struggling to sell that their dealer networks won't take for whatever reason. Last year, we looked at a cheap, brand new Focus they had in (not for me) and it was an import with low spec. I had previously looked at delivery mileage Suzuki Kizashis they had in at strong discounts which were UK spec but a model that had not sold very well.

Whatever the reason, £6,999 for a pre-registered 3 Form Sport is a lot of car for the money.

Exhaust Wrap: How much do I need ?

Posting this in here as the R8 section can be a bit quiet of late.

My 200 Cabby manifold spits out some heat and I am wanting to
reduce it, i'm on the hunt for a 25/ZR heat shield for starters but
my mate suggested heat wrapping the manifold too.

There is more pipework on these than a 25/ZR as the CAT is past
the manifold and not integral like the 25/ZR.

So how much wrap will I need on a 1.6 K-Series 200/216 Manifold ?

(Pic is for reference)

Matallic noise from head reduces once warm

Hi all,

Its not my first post but I have not been on here for over two years and since then it seems a lot of change has taken place. One of which is the password situation and for the life of me I could not remember which email address I signed up with as ajmetro so it is easier to just register a new one. Any how I'm digressing. I have been getting a matallic noise from what seems to be the head. my innitial thoughts were lifters and perhaps heat sheild or spark plugs. Checked all of these and nothing. Changed the oil and filters twice, nothing.
Cleaned the oil system out with the dreaded controversial cleanse and changed oil and filters... nothing.
Searched the web for indication of the problem and came across the VVC rattle which linked into what was happening but after hearing it on utube it does not seem as matallic or intense as that on my vvc MGTF. checked all of the heat sheilds nothing. Wondered if I had forgotten what the lifters sound like so started the engine without oil in it and it is not the same sound.
If I find out how to upload images or video I will post the sound and the inside of the cam case as I needed to change the gasket.

Any suggestions as to what this sound is would be great. It is usually present from start up and rattles with the revs, when you put your foot down on the accelerator it tends to get louder and then disappears (oil not getting somewhere?). The sound tends to reduce/ disappear when the engine heats up to normal temp. Nothing wrong with the gears or box and no oil leaks.
It certainly sounds as if it is coming from the cam area though. After taking the top offI found nothin untoward apart from a nick on one of the components that was like a scratch about 0.5cm in circumference. The scratch as near where there is like a magnetic injector or something (not sure what it was) that was facing that part of the cam nearer to the filler hole and on the injector side of the engine.

Everyone is usually so helpful here so any advice/solutions would be appreciated.
Was tempted t contact Russell in kent but not sure if he would be able to do anything with it if he did not have a diagnosis before visiting.

MAF - Which one? Bosch or Low Gain Pierburg with Digimafam?

Hi,

Today i noticed my Bosch MAF values on Scangauge are really low at idle.

I remember to see values around 2x m/s and now it´s showing 11-12 m/s. I usually check those value when the engine was cold and today i check them when the engine was hot but i think it will make no difference. However i´ll check again tomorrow with the engine cold.

I have a Digimafam and i remember it made some nice difference in the past when i installed it with the Bosch MAF (even when it was good) but now it seems to make little to no difference regarding those values and driveability. It seems to increase 1/2 m/s at idle at most.

I unplugged the MAF and the car seems quicker below 2000RPM, so i guess my MAF must be almost shot.

Tomorrow i´ll try to clean it up but i have not much hope.

So, the question is, which MAF should i get? Original Bosch or Low Gain Pierburg?

Low Gain Pierburg seems a good option since i already have a Digimafam and SDi injectors but i´m afraid the power delivered by Low Gain Pierburg + Digimaf will be lower than a original Bosch. I think i remember saw somewhere values around 10 m/s at idle with this combo? Will Pierburg + Digimafam really match original Bosch performance?

Whats your opinion? Which MAF should i go? Original Bosch (if you know anywhere i can buy it cheaper let me know please) or Low Gain Pierburg?

seat belt replacement

The ash grey belts in my TF have seen better days and I would like to change them for black Securon ones without the pretensioners.

I have read about the battery disconnection, and waiting before working with the pretension stalks, and also about the need to replace the pretensioner wiring with a resistor to make the SRS system think there is a pretensioner fitted.

Has anyone done this, and if so what value of resistor is required for a TF?
There seem to be different ones available for different cars, but obviously I need to get the right one for a TF!

Any useful advice as ever gratefully appreciated.

Rear drum/cylinder help

A cylinder has stopped working (one of the pistons doesn't push out when press the brakes) on my 45 and I have no idea how to remove it. The one on the opposite side has a bolt next to where the brake pipe attaches behind but there isn't one on the one I need off which makes me worry it's been sheared off, if that's how it's attached anyway?
I have a donor car and need to sort this asap so whether it's easier to swap the cylinder or the whole drum I don't know?

Rover 200 Shock Absorbers - help!

Hi,

I've got a bubble shaped 200, which is my everyday car. In the quest for an improvement in handling (and, importantly, a nicer ride height!) i bought a full set of rover 200 BRM shocks and springs (used).

after being left a while sitting, i finally had time to take them apart to clean them up before fitting, but, sadly, it seems one of the front shock absorbers has bitten the dust.

while 3 of the four shocks take a firm push to compress them (just the bare shock, no springs!) then return by themselves, one takes less force (but still some) to push down, but then doesn't return.

as i can't seem to find any of the correct BRM part number shocks, are they interchangeable with any other shocks from 200s, 25s or ZRs? seems that people have different opinions of whether or not all 200s had the same shock and it's only the spring and bump stops that's different (which would be great, i could just swap the springs to my current standard shocks) or not.

hoping someone can clear this up for me!

cheers

Schools out, The GS is launched so it is now time to kit it out and have fun.

School’s out and it’s time for summer and that means holidays or at the very least a fun, family day out.

MG Motor UK’s newest model, the MG GS, is the perfect solution for getting a family and all the necessary equipment in whilst still maintaining comfort and space. To make the MG GS even more family and adventure friendly, there is a fantastic array of accessories available.

For those looking to head out on their bikes, roof cross bars (£204.00) are the perfect accessory to hold cycle carriers (£192.00). Or, if the preference is to place bikes on the back, a tow bar cycle carrier (from £131.99) is also available to carry them neatly to the chosen destination. The roof cross bars are also ideal for a roof box. The 360-litre roof box (£420.00) with a three-point locking system, for additional security, has a quick attachment that fits the box to the roof bars entirely from the inside.

Hoping to tow a caravan or trailer? Great news, the MG GS has a towing capacity (braked) of 1,750kg. A tow bar is also available in the accessories range making it easier to fit, hook-up and tow.

For the more practical customer, who might want to kid-proof or simply protect their MG GS, there is a range of rubber mats (from £30.00) for the front, rear and boot. These handy accessories protect the car’s interior from mud, spillages and water keeping the MG GS in showroom condition. Those looking for a dog-friendly vehicle will be pleased to hear that the MG GS is also available with a dog guard (£75.00).

There are a number of other accessories for customers looking to make their MG GS stand out even more, including chrome effect side grilles, a chrome effect tailgate finisher and speed flash decals. For the full range and prices, visit http://ift.tt/2aocA9v.

The MG GS range starts from £14,995 and is currently available with a number of great offers, including:

An £850 deposit contribution on all MG GS models
0% APR representative finance, which is available up to five years with a minimum 20% deposit
A five year or 80,000 mile (which occurs first) manufacturer parts and labour warranty

Check out Chris Knott's new Top 20 clubs

Well, the figures can't lie - as promised here's the Chris Knott Top 20 car club forum rankings for the first half of 2016.

As you know, Chris Knott Insurance specialises in looking after the insurance needs of car enthusiasts, working to help the members of around 200 car clubs/forums across the UK.

To feature in our Top 20, a club/forum will be producing a high number of quote enquiries and we're converting a strong percentage into policies. It hints at the makes and models we're best at but not entirely as one club for the marque might be doing better than another club for the same marque that is not featured.

Our average conversion rate is 42% at the moment (v. good for a single provider), so you've a strong chance of saving money by calling us for a quote.

And if your club features it means you're more likely to save money on your standard/modified/multicar insurance when you ask Chris Knott to quote, based on past performance.

If your forum doesn't feature or it did before but has dropped out of our Top 20, get calling us and help us get you up there. It's all about picking up the phone (0800 917 2274) or completing our online quote request form to see how much you could save on your car insurance.

Remember that we're happy to share our earnings with your club for every policy that goes ahead or renews so you'll benefit the club/forum too.

"My renewal came up at £440 with my usual insurance company this year, found a cheaper quote online with AF but CK beat them. Policy amount this year with CK is £280...massive difference. Cheers CK and specifically Ian who works for you." ScoobyGT, UK Legacy forum

"All paid up Nick, just have to print off and sign, top marks to all at Chris Knott." Mick.M, Focus ST Owners Club

"I've just renewed with CK. Their price was around £400 cheaper than elsewhere." ChrisSB, Jaginfo

"My insurance with Chris Knott started today. Thanks guys for best price!" M015T, Hyundai Coupe Owners Club

"According to my phone log, it took me 5mins and 34 seconds to: Dial, Connect, Navigate the menus, Talk to Emma about changing insurance from one car to another, and take my money (a very very reasonable £15 admin fee), then get a "how much" on changing again to another car later next week, And then a bit of "social", End the call.....in the same amount of time, I have been on hold with various other companies, listening to rather awful music that's so loud it's distorted. My thanks to Emma @ Chris Knott for making the whole process, quick, easy and painless. This is how it should be done! Once again 10/10." RainbowFire, Briskoda

“New policy is now with you starting 12 June - very helpful and very competitive! Thanks” Mr Tidy, Z4 Forum

“Well I've accepted my quote today. Happy with how I was quoted and beat my renewal quote by nearly £300. Most comparison websites were a little over £100 more on how I was getting my quotes done, but Ian talked me through it all and got it down to just a little bit under £500 on my THP165 Ultra Prestige. Very happy with that! Thanks very much.” Mjogreen, DS3 Owners Club

"I've just joined CK, great quote and all confirmed by email this morning." Nyx1962, Hyundai Coupe Owners Club

Headlight Washer Hose Leak

Headlight Washer Hose Leak

Hi all,

The hose directly connected to my headlight washer pump has an annoying 'drip drip' leak. I have asked my garage to take a look and report back (had the wishbones replaced so while it was up on the ramp it was easy for them to take a look).

When the pump is activated to wash the headlights (I only have this working at all because of MOT regulations...) the washer moves slightly and is not held in place strongly enough by the retaining clip.

This is the hose coming directly out of the washer pump just to clarify.

Is there anywhere I can purchase a washer/clip that does not involve me buying the whole length of pipe feeding the headlight jets? I have searched extensively and bar going to a scappies and grubbing about on my hands and knees I am out of options!

PTFE tape only works so long as the pump is not active. As soon as the pump is started, the leak returns. It is becoming a pain to have to constantly fill the bottle up!

Over the years I've been using this enthusiasts web-site, now lost count of the times I've tried to send a PM to members only to have it rejected with the following warning message :~

Quote:

Sometimes results in losing a lengthy message which is wasteful.

Is there some way members can be advised that their PM Box is full with an "Auto-alert" so that they can pre-empt lost messaging in that way?

random engine miss fire still!!!

Is the forum search working? I have a random engine miss fire with the Error code P0300 from the testbook diagnostic.

The car is a new addition and is a 2002 MGTF VVC160

I have done the following:
NEW
(1) coil pak
(2) ignition leads that come with coil packs
(3) correct spark plugs

Run the above 3 items through a race diagnostic tester and they exceed set standard

Replaced thermostat
replaced temp sensor
drained and refilled with red coolant
bled cooling system at ALL points

The random miss is ANY and ALL cylinders

Takes about 10klm to show. Engine miss fire is at:
low revs
or high revs
or mid range revs

have checked for leaks in induction and exhaust

using NO coolant

No coolant in oil
No oil in coolant

No signs of weeping on the block

So engine miss fire is only after the car is hot. Car is carefully warmed before exceeding 3000RPM

engine will Rev past 6000RPM

engine warning light flashes and goes solid. I can keep the miss fire away after this if I increase RPM carefully. But the engine light is still on.

Park the car and come back in 60 minutes and NO miss, NO engine light. And start all over again.

I have only the O2 sensors to go. Are the O2 sensors the same Up and down stream? Are they 4 wire. What brand of sensors can I use.

Tonneau Dust

I recently bought a (used) tonneau for the TF which looked in excellent condition. However, after a few days I noticed it was shedding an Orange dust like substance, onto the rear parcel shelf and also the hood, which I assume to be the foam layer between the PVC outer and the cloth inner deteriorating.
I was wondering if anybody has found a solution to this, either spraying with some sort of sealer or applying a self adhesive backing maybe.
It would be a shame to scrap the cover, as it is good in every other way, but the dust gets everywhere.

Its not uncommon for the alternator to seize which intern causes the alternator belt to melt. The alternator will probably be fine once freed off, easiest way to check is take of rear drivers side wheel and check the belt is present, you may need to remove the plastic (or felt) cover, however; this is usually missing

I prefer to take my cars to a location for photoshoots. It makes for much better pictures than ones taken in the street or on the driveway.

I still need to get the underside detailed/protected to my satisfaction before winter comes around. I've been concentrating on the mechanicals of both cars so haven't had time yet.

Engine Warning light - Which reader?

I dropped a bit of a clanger when I was replacing the dampers on my TF and forgot to re-connect on of the exhaust sensors. A couple of runs later and I am rewarded with a warning light.

I double checked my handiwork and discovered the unconnected sensor.

Reading other posts on here, it looks like the light will go out on its own eventually (assuming that's what the fault was).

Other contributors have recommended buying an OBD2 reader to do a reset and I think it would be a useful bit of kit to have anyway. Any recommendations on a good one to purchase?

Cheers.

hi

so I've had a rover streetwise now since January.

I'm after any advise on getting some more power out of it, as its a 1.4 petrol, and well its a nice car, good to drive but would like a little more power for pulling away and over taking.

also, I'd some mg-rover.org decals but can't seem to find who's selling them on here, might be me not looking in the right place.

Hello again chaps.

For a while now the tensioner on my motor has been bouncing or vibrating quite a bit on tick-over. Once the revs get up it seemed to sort it's self out and as odd as it sounds appeared to tighten up.

Had another look at it today and to my eye the tensioner seems perilously close to the idler on the right!

What do you chaps reckon?

Painting letters & stripes: how to?

For the stripes I would mask lines along them to help prevent colour bleeding and to help you keep the straight edge. Mask one stripe at a time and paint it. Masking between all of these stripes at the same time is going to take a lot of time getting in between the gaps properly masked.

The lettering will be more difficult. You'll have to just really take your time and not go over the edges of the letters.

A small nail varnish or artists brush is what you'll need. Trying to mask it all up and spray it is going to be very labour intensive and not really possible.

Or for the stripes you could add actual stripes as per 'go faster stripes' which are used to stick on the sides of cars. I have a green stripe on my cam cover...

That green stripe is a stick on stripe not paint. If you can find the colour and thickness you want I think that's the best way to do the stripes. Have a search on eBay for self adhesive stripes.

The 'Rover' stamped covers were deleted to save from manufacturing separate 'MG' and 'Rover' covers for the coils. It also saved on cost.

Mk2 25 Cut out and died on the Motorway

I was driving to work this morning and as I was going down the slip
road to enter the Motorway the engine lost power, cut out and died
on me, had to be rescused by a big ape in a banana mobile, (A Steve
in a Yellow Cupra R) before getting dumped in a Costa Coffee car
park we had a quick look.

Car has oil.
Battery is 3 months old, connections and slam panel earth point is solid.
Alternator is 3 months old, wiring is solid.
Car Cranks, wont start.
Has compression.
Both belts replaced 2 years ago.
Coolant is as it should be.

Narrowed it down to either the Pump or the main BCU but any other
lines of investigation would be great, should the next test be to take
off the top boost hose and spray WD-40 in it to see if it will fire ?

Car is a 2004 (54) ROVER 25 2.0TD 106k on the clock.

Stainless Steel Wheel Nuts

Hi All

Can anyone recommend a suppliers of good quality and reasonably priced stainless steel TF 2004 wheel nuts. Also I believe the spec is M12 x 1.8 pitch, 19mm Hex Head is this correct? as I do not wish to order the wrong spec.

Thanks
Robert

The PO apparently had a bad experience with locknuts the stud has a angle grinder sized hole as well!

Getting an ABS warning light, I wonder why???
