Column Stalks Wiring

Hi,

This is a bit of a drive by posting so apologies for that in advance.

I picked up an MG wiper / light stalk on ebay for fitting to my car. Its a kit car so is all sorts of different bits of cars flung together.

I didn't get the connector blocks and haven't been able to find any wiring diagrams so was hoping someone here might be able to help.

Below is a pic with white squares blobbed in on each of the connectors. Does anyone know what is what ...

As a bit of an aside. the block of 5 in the bottom left (wiper side) dont actually seen to be connected to anything on the stalk ? is this just because it might also have been fitted to a different model

And finally ... I've seen people on here replacing these with landrover ones... Has anyone ever tried to lower these ? By default that are pretty much at 10 and 2 ... i'd prefer 8 and 4. Perhaps disconnect them from the central lump of plastic and jigger something up ?

regards

roo

This time next year...

What are we to expect from MG?

Based on the most positive interpretation of recent news and rumours we will be in a situation where by next Autumn we could well have the following range:

MG6: Freshly facelifted, possibly new range of engines.

MG3: Fresh to the market so not due for a facelift for some time, but probably will have the new GM Turbo engine.

MGCS: Due out next year.

MGGT: According to Car News China out here in July.

That's looking like a like a big step forward. Even if I have my doubts that the GT will come here (not least as it will be confusing having the MGGT as well as the MG6GT). Strikes me that the next 12 months are going to be very important in the MG rebirth.

Water pump failed. Cam belt ruined and bent valves..

Coming home from work I stopped at lights but the car was making a grinding noise. When I set off it was really sluggish but then it was like someone just turned it off and I ground to a halt. Had a friend with me who turned it over whilst I looked under bonnet and it was obvious the cam belt had got damaged. It had rubbed the casing away. I removed a couple of bolts and sure enough, the belt was only about a quarter it's normal width. Had to get RAC to get home.

So removed the damaged belt and found the bearing in the water pump has collapsed and there was about 8mm of play in the pulley. This has caused the belt to rub on the covers and must of jumped teeth.

Got a new water pump and timing belt and fit it. It turned over but wouldn't fire. Removed spark plugs and did compression test. Zero on all cylinders.

So removed the head. 14 valves are bent. :-(

I removed the tappets and they look in good order.

My question is has anyone used these?

What is the current advise ref Head Gasket Failure?

Hi all, I have a 2002 MGTF 1.8 (non VVT) which is showing distinct signs of HGF. (Oil is evident in the coolant and steam from the exhausts). I was just about to order all the replacement parts and discovered that there seems to be a range of options available.

Firstly, it is wise to go for genuine parts as opposed to cheaper aftermarket gaskets?

I believe a multilayer gasket is the preferred option?

Will I need to buy a new uprated oil rail for the head / through bolts to screw to or will just a new multilayer gasket and new bolts be ok?

If the head needs to be skimmed should I fit a stainless steel spacer?

Do Haynes do a manual for my engine (maybe in another MG) - cannot find one for the MGTF.

....and finally where is a good place to buy all of the above?

They of course did the 160 Trophy and also fitted the unit into other models I believe. The older Rover 623 produces 159/160 BHP in it's detuned form. In the Honda sports models the same engine produces near 200 BHP!. The 1.8 Turbo produces 160 BHP so just what is it that makes 160 BP so special????

Today, my clutch arm has seized, apparently a common problem, due to the fact the clutch arm has no protection from the grime thrown up from the road.

Battery keeps dying.

My battery has died a few times in the last 2 months. First time it happened was after leaving the obd2 reader in for2 weeks and I believe it was the cause. The second time was after doing some modifications where things were tested leaving the keys in the ignition a few times. This 3rd time the car door was left not quite shut overnight and not activating the door sensor thingy. All of this has also happened since I disconnected the instrument panel to add the chrome rings. Could I have somehow reconnected it in a way that is draining the battery or is that not possible?

Each time looks like a clear cause, but should the battery have survived a bit better or am I just not giving it much of a chance.

No idea how old the battery is.

I'm thinking I just need to replace the battery, but is there a way I can be sure it is the battery and not the alternator or something draining it?

If I need a new battery which one do I need? Never had to buy one before and halfrauds (convenient) has a few different ones.

Thanks.

How heavy are my wheels? Read on....

I had an opportunity today to gather together some of my MGF/TF wheels and weigh them.

All the wheels were weighed on the same set of scales in a 10 minute period using the same technique. In other words, the weights can be used as a comparison if not micro-accurate (although the scales I used do tally exactly with a set of calibrated scales I regularly use at the gym).

Photos are included to clarify the wheels I'm referring to in the weights and measurements below.

I had access to seven different types of wheel and all with 95.25mm PCD. They were:

1. Standard Mk1 MGF Mpi 6 spoke

2. MGF Abingdon (also fitted to TF Cool Blue & Cup racing cars)

3. MG TF "Swedish" (sourced from Sweden via the MGCC MGF Register)

4. Ariel Atom Mk1/2 fronts (chemically stripped prior to powder coating)

5. Ariel Atom Mk1/2 rears (chemically stripped prior to powder coating)

6. MGF Trophy 160

7. MG TF Ultra-light weight (ULW)

Results are in the format wheel type, diameter, rim width, ET (offset) and weight. So here goes....

1. Standard 1.8Mpi, 15", 6", +28mm, 7.6Kg

2. MGF Abingdon, 16", 7", +28mm, 7.6Kg

3. TF Swedish, 16", 7", +26mm, 9.0Kg

4. Ariel Atom fronts, 15", 7", +35mm, 9.3Kg

5. Ariel Atom rears, 16", 7", +37mm, 10.1Kg

6. MGF Trophy, 16", 7", +26mm, 10.7Kg

7. MG TF ULW, 16", 7", +26mm, 6.1Kg

Just a couple of observations on the Atom wheels.

The offset on the 16" version suggests you might gain more clearance on the rear arches for wider tyres over the Trophy 160 version. Whilst looking very similar in design to the Trophy wheels I notice that the Atom wheels have a slightly thicker spoke where they meet the outer wheel rim. It's probably not obvious from the photos but we're only talking a couple of millimetres anyway.

Hope the above proves interesting and useful. A few photos below.

Instrument Cowl Repair

As it had reached the stage where the instrument cluster was holding the cowl on (rather than the other way round), I decided I ought to see about sticking it back down (I'm going to try a strip of Bituminous Tape used to fix BMW door seals).

Before this though, I decided to glue the remains of the three tabs back on the cowl. The glue i used for this is a rubberised cyanoacrylate which is flexible and designed to cope with a wide range of temperatures (plus, I already had it).

The glueing went well, unfortunately I dropped the cowl on the kitchen floor and it has now split. So, now I know why it broke on the first place: age+heat+UV has led to the plastic becoming very brittle.

Doesn't bode well for everyone else...

Custom actuator bracket help

I'll be fitting my TD04 soon so just getting the last few bits and pieces ready but having trouble with the wastegate actuator.

As I've had to clock the compressor housing the bolts that would usually hold the actuator are now on the opposite side of the housing.

I had mocked up a bracket but I've just rigged up a bicycle pump and boost gauge to the actuator to test everything and it turns out that the bracket actually flexes so the wastegate doesn't open fully, so it's back to the drawing board.

There's no where on the housing itself to put bolts into other than the original two holes which are now on the opposite side as I mentioned. I've seen other turbos where there are bolts on the back of the housing but this has nothing.

I've heard of people making brackets out of wheel spacers, which I've got a few lying around but can't see how that would work (or if it would have the same flexing problem as my bracket does).

I can get some pictures up if it's easier, for now here's a pic of the turbo BEFORE I clocked it, if you can imagine the housing is now rotated almost 180 degrees so that the outlet of the turbo is in the same position as the standard one, but the actuator stays where it is.

I have some chips on the bonnet and a couple of scratches that i'd like attending to also, but what im wondering is, is am I going to be better off fixing the individual items, or am I gonna be better off in the long run getting a full respray of the panels on the outside of the car? How much would I be looking at for a full respray? and does anyone know any good bodyshops in the Daventry, rugby, Northampton area that could solve my issues. Im in the Daventry area.

Many thanks

To buy or not to buy?

I have decided to start looking for a new car to replace my much loved Rover 25. I was initially looking at used Seat Leon, Ford Fiesta or Kia Ceed/Rio. However I was then totally thrown when I came across the MG3.

I keep finding very mixed reviews. The biggest selling point for me is the price, as I can get a lot new car with less mileage and some very good features. However the element putting me off the most is the engine.

Now that some people have had a MG3 for a while, I was hoping I could get some advice. Should I buy one?

soon as we had it i flushed coolant as looked dodgy (turned out it had kseal in it)

another week later head gasket started leaking water to the outisde just above gearbox, replaced that (under guarantee still)

coolant level hasnt dropped so cant understand where its coming from, just seems a little too much to be rain draining out

MGF 75th Anniversary - Project

Hi All

First a little story....

In 1995 my GF and I drove past a Rover garage and there on the front was a brand new (just released) MGF in Purple. (you know the colour).

To say it was stunning is an understatement. So of course we pulled in and had a chat with the sales guy. A few months later we look delivery of our brand new purple MGF VVC and it was AMAZING.

Then 3 years later when the contract was coming to an end we were shown the 75th anniversary model in black with red hood and leather plus lots of optional chrome. We bought it !

In 2002 when the contract came to an end the garage prised the keys from my hand as i sobbed. But with a new born we needed a sensible car.

God I loved those F's and ever since I have always looked lovingly at anyone that I passed.

3 kids later and 1 "ex" I saw a very sad looking 75th anniversary for sale that needed some serious TLC.

I BOUGHT IT !!!!

After 13 years I am re-united with exactly the same model as I owned.

This thread will be my story / money pit / rant / love story for this car.

She was purchased on 6th June and already I have used this forum extensively for tips and guides so I'm hopefully now gonna give something back.

You will notice from the picture that straight away the hood is the wrong colour - this was the first mission.....

metallic twangy sound

hi all, i've mentioned this before but previously i thought it was abs related, now i'm not so sure... bear with me whilst i try to explain the symptoms. sorry for the long post.

when i brake gently at low speeds (under 20mph) whilst turning the wheel, there is sometimes a repetitive twangy sound, a bit like someone repeatedly twanging a metal ruler with a sort of added clunk. i think it only happens when the wheel is turning to the left (not when i turn right) and i'm also lightly braking; it's not every time but mostly, and it doesn't happen when i brake hard.

there is also sometimes a tick tick tick sound that happens when i am turning left without braking that bears a striking resemblance to the twang sound, only more muted, with the same rhythm at least.

as there is a little feedback through the brake pedal when it happens i had thought it was abs related, but all the reluctor rings are fine and there is no abs light on on the dash. i've also just had all the pads replaced where it was found that the inner pads had jammed in the callipers - they're all ok now though.

i have 2 outstanding recalls which are being looked at in October:

Quote:

In an isolated number of cases, it is possible that the lower suspension swivel/ball joint mounting rivets can become detached. This may in extreme cases, if not identified, result in a possible detachment of the joint.

Quote:

Under extreme conditions it is possible that the rear suspension top arm may fail.

is it possible that either of these may be causing my symptoms?

i also noticed that there is a rubber joint/knuckle near the suspension coil on the drivers side, which has split. it is the one in this image (not my picture), could this be related to the noise/recalls/symptoms?

sorry for the essay, but you folks are so knowledgeable i wanted to pick your brains before i make my next move. thanks in advance.

Turbo removal how to?

I want to take the turbo off to properly check the wastegate is closing and also check the turbo impeller. However the bolts are rusted solid and access is difficult. Haynes says it needs to come off with the exhaust manifold and the cooling system also needs to be drained.

Also thought about trying to gain more access from above but to remove the air cleaner housing injectors and intake manifold need to come off then remove the camshaft cover.

Can't really get in to get some heat on the nuts either with a small blowtorch as that would help with undoing the bolts immensely.

It looks like one of those jobs that once I get started either something will go wrong or I will wish I had not started it.

Decisions decisions. Any advice from those who have done this?

MOT until jan 15 (I think)

Comes with a ZR seats(not fitted)

Allows (old 5 spoke rover)

spare set of steel wheels

Still drivers great

Problems:

it has a sheared nut on the passenger side front wheel so cant get the wheel off

That Tyre is a bit bald but cant change it

original interior is pretty shabby

What do I want?

I want it gone lol it can give me £100 scrap, if you can better that and get it this week end its yours The fuel pump must be worth more than that i reckon.

email me here or woood60@hotmail.com

If I get no response I will scrap it Monday but the engine is good so its a shame as it could keep another cherished rover alive.

Rover 600 turbo PAS pump

well, i bought a gasket for the pump 2 years ago, when i dismantled the pump i used fine sand-paper to get of the old gasket leftovers. When i was suppose to put it back together i noticed the gasket i bought was too thin, so when i tighted the screwes i couldn't turn the pump. I bought some stuff to make my own gasket which were thicker, and it did work after some sanding and several tries. I spoke to that dude on ebay who sells these gaskets, he said he would send me another gasket which were thicker, and he also had noticed that even 0,3mm has alot to say if the pump would work or not.

anyways, when i put it back together last summer i forgot thread-lock on the bolts holding it together, with the result that it started making a whiny noise and to keep a story relatively short, i had to take it apart this summer and replace the gasket and do it properly with thread-lock.

Well, the problem now is not that it isn't working, it has never worked this good before actually :)

but, it started making a nasty grinding noise, i suspect the interior moving parts has been damaged during the winter when the bolts had come loose, because i saw some gridning-marks inside the pump when i opened it this summer.

the question is, the pump is working great, but that grinding noise is worrying me, how bad can it be? could it suddently seize up on me while driving?

and do anyone have one of these pumps laying around i could buy? they are not availably anywhere, including ebay :s

New Brakes - Slight knocking noise when breaking

Morning all,

I noticed something today for the first time since changing my brakes the other week (the cars hardly been used since as I only need it at weekends now) but the story is as follows:

Brand new discs and pads fitted to the front and I have covered circa 250 miles on them of careful gentle braking to bed them in.

When changing them one of the slider pins seized and so I replaced this and also greased them all up and the cars been fine since.

Drives perfectly and as it should, no wobble, no judders nothing, but today after covering these circa 250 miles without an issue I heard when slowing a faint knock knock knock noise coming from the front drivers side (which is the side the slider seized on.

I have checked the wheel bolts and they are tight and fine so I was wondering if this is something anyone has come across before or if anyone could have some idea of what's causing this noise?

Thanks in advance

Advice/guidance required regarding service work

Hi all,

Well, I've had my 1.6F now for about 6 weeks (my first one!) and am loving it!! - I haven't done anything major to her yet....bought a practically new tonneau off Ebay (genuine original one, too in 100% mint condition) and done a few other minor bits....during which time, I've been reading about stuff on here....great forum for info!

Anyway, I'll be after getting Dave/Kayleigh to carry out some work for me (I don't have the tools/time/knowledge to try and do it myself) as the last service info I have for my car was 2009 and. Whilst that might seem bad, the car has only covered around 3,000 miles since that date. That service work included a new cambelt and oil/air filters etc etc....

I don't know if the car has ever had HGF - wouldn't know how to check. It appears fine right now, what with the coolant being relatively clear for the length of time it has been in without a change - 5 yrs I presume, but cannot be certain. No mayo, no exhaust emissions etc.

One question would be wether or not it is worthwhile/advisable to have the HG replaced when Dave/Kayleigh come visit me or not.

I'm thinking like this because it's £150 for a new cambelt and tensioners and I was gonna get a major service done for £100, too. Also thinking about SS coolant pipes at a quoted cost of £115 fitted with new OAT.

I've looked at what work they do on a HG job, and for £295 (non-VVC) they do the cambelt and a few other 'jobs' incorporated into the HG job that I'd be paying for if NOT having a HG replacement, thus technically making it cheaper to replace the HG itself at the same time rather than at a later date.

Is this one of those 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' kinda things, or would it be advisable to just get a new HG whilst work is underway?

Of course, I don't wanna throw money down the drain if it is not required, I'm not loaded, but I don't want to skimp on looking after her either - I'm just after a bit of input from the guys that know.

What would you do if it was you??

And now for something really technical -

- checking the oil level.

My 180 is a pain. The book says to withdraw the dipstick, wipe the end, then reinsert it and withdraw it again - and it's always over the Max mark. This is because of the wavy tube - when you withdraw it the first time it pulls oil up the tube and deposits it on the walls. Then when you push it back down and withdraw it again, that oil ends up on the upper part of the indicator. The same thing seems to happen when driving it, so I can't get an accurate level a few minutes after switch off as recommended either, even the first time.

The only thing I can do is leave it several hours if not overnight, then remove the dipstick and check it there and then. If it needs oil I have the same problem, so I have to keep a 1 litre container with graduation marks down the side, decide how much I need to top-up by, put that amount into the container, then empty that into the engine. Oil changes are even worse as once I have put the bulk in I have to add 1 litre at a time till it appears on the indicator before I can run the engine to fill the new filter, then wait said hours or overnight before I can top it back up to the correct level.

Just sayin', that's all.

1999 416 Air Con

I have a late 99 Rover 416 and it seems that the air con dryer is different between 1999 and 2000 to the standard 95-99 part. The most obvious difference is that the green presure switch is mounted at the top rather than the side of the dryer. Does anybody know if the earlier dryer can be used, as I am having difficulty locating the correct part. I think the old part will physically fit.

Range Rover Sport 4.2 Supercharged

I am looking to get myself a newer set of wheels and am drawn to the first generation Range Rover Sport with the 4.2 Supercharged engine, does anyone have an experience of these, what are the engines like for reliability and anything to look out for?

It would be around a 2006 or 2007 my budget would stretch too, I would be looking for lower mileage examples with less than 70K ideally.

Am I mad ?

Rover 25 underbonnet soundproofing missing?

Dear all,

I've just bought a mint 2002 1.6L 25 iXL with 48k miles and I think I got the bargain of the decade! :) Just wanted to check though, in my 'outgoing' 1.4 200 there is underbonnet sound-proofing/padding (on the underside of the bonnet) but on the 1.6 there is no sound-proofing. Is it missing or was it not fitted for a reason? Is it something to do with engine heat maybe? I wondering if I should steal it from the 1.4 before I sell it!

Thanks,

Andy

I've seen an immaculate 02 160 with just 28K certificated mileage. It looks beautiful (ad on Ebay from Malvern Motor Co.) but it is a bold £2695, more than I really want to pay right now; winter is coming although I'm a hood down all year driver. Is there anyone on here who knows this TF or Malvern Motor Co.?

The car I agreed to buy turned out to be CAT D :(

Expansion tank change

Hi,

I need to change an expansion tank and was wondering, is it possible to fit one without emptying the whole cooling system. My suspicion is that it is if the lower hose is clamped or tied up so only a bit drips out, but cannot find a definite answer!

Would it need fully bleeding or not, as it isn't going to really be introducing any air into the system?

Thanks

John

MGJohn's MG ZT superb "Bodge" comes undone.

Although I completed the work on this 2nd MG ZT project car sometime ago, I've kept it SORN off road. Use the other one instead.

Just occasionally starting it and getting the engine up to operating temperature to keep fluid and other things moving including climate control and AirCon etc.

Leave it running for a while with bonnet raised and occasional blips on the throttle. Did this today and imagine my surprise to see huge clouds of steam from the engine compartment. Must have blown a gasket or something.

No, wasn't anything like that... phew!

Sheepishly peering through the steam from the area it was coming from showed my "modified" ~ OK bodge :) ~ little hose to the turbocharger had separated jetting coolant straight onto the now hot Exhaust Manifold and Turbocharger. Hence all the steam.

It had worked well so far but, although I had obtained a good used replacement, as I was not using the car fitting that was not a priority. Today it became a priority ..:)

See attached images. These little coolant hoses, less that six inches long, retail in excess of fifty quid if Rimmer Bros price lists are to be believed! So, when working on this car and found a split on that hose where it attaches to the turbocharger ~ they are clamped tightly and suspect heavy handed attempts to remove in previous ownership caused the split in the clamped area ~ decided to make up a good one using a short length of household 15mm Copper Pipe and two good off cuts from other coolant hoses of suitable diameter to make up a serviceable replacement at small cost. I was pleased with the result but, with twenty-twenty hindsight I could have made it more secure. Clever me had used a single wide Jubilee style worm drive clip bridging over the join of the two pieces of hose. That was my mistake. Had I used two narrow Jubilee Clips either side of the join rather than bridging it with a single wide one, that would have been a better stronger and more secure option.

Anyway, fitted the good used replacement. Then filled and bled the system and all appears well now after starting the engine and warming it up. Glad it happened in front of my garage rather than say out on a Motorway had I decided to put the car back on the road.

So, in some ways, what happened today was rather fortunate. It's an ill wind and all that ... ;)

The first image shows where my three piece hose had separated. The second the "bodge" alongside good, used replacement and the final picture the good used hose in place.

i prefer the new alcantara as its a darker finish and looks better to me, its teflon treated so water repelant. i noticed the mk1 door cards have better insolation than later ones to help with rattles.

I was told a few weeks ago that an airbag will not deploy if you don't have your seat belt buckled. I understand that the two are meant to work in unison and we don't have the USA style large airbag but it does seem a little harsh not to deploy.

The reason it made me think is although I always wear a seatbelt my Rover 75 shows no warning light when I drive without it (say when I am swapping cars on the drive). Therefore how does it know that the seatbelt is buckled?

The aim of the game is simple, guess the UK sales figures for MG for the month of August 2014. Whoever is closest to the actual total given by the SMMT early next month wins. Once a number is gone it is gone, you will need to have the closest number to it.

Results are out on Thursday 4th September so I will close the book at 10pm on Monday 1st September.

Remember it is the month before the 64 reg number so don't expect too many fireworks.

Just been cleaning up the exhaust face on the head getting ready to fit the new manifold gasket. Using a mirror to examine the face noticed a line of oil at the head gasket joint so wiped it away. The gasket looks like it's a MLS as I can see nice bright steel in the joint. In the past I seem to recall that I read that the MLS can weep oil. is this correct or am I looking at more problems here?

The Rimmer Bros one appears to have some extra panels on the engine side, The ebay one is considerably cheaper. I have also seen a second hand one for £115 inc postage.

My present undertray is a bit knackered. The fixing points are worn, It hangs low and scrapes on nearly all road humps. I have tried with a network of cable ties and so on but always gets worse. I want to keep it for the sound insulation, aero and keeping the engine clean.

Cheers.

Cant get into gear

Hi all,

Just over a month ago I had new master and slave cylinders fitted, clutch and new lever arm. I was turning onto a friends street and found it a little harder than normal getting into 2nd gear, thought nothing more of it and parked up. 10 minutes later I tried to set off but it wouldn't go into any gear, engine was running fine, clutch pedal ok there was a funky burning smell coming through the vents though.

Rang AA, 45 minutes later they where there. Gave them keys and lo and behold when in gear without a problem. Drove home all of 3 miles, pulled up and went for reverse and it wouldn't go in again.

Has anyone else had this problem or might have a suggestion? I am a bit stumped.

one other question. Now and then, maybe once a week, when braking it feeling like my brakes are grinding and not working as they should?. I have had new brakes around 6 months ago so I know its not the pads.

soft top leak

OK so I knew in my heart that the soft top was not really pourous even though I had never re proofed it in, well, ever actually. But decided to see if reproofing helped me find or solved the leak.

Well it did. I found the leak and it's not the hood pourocity. The driver side window seal at the top just isnt working in one specific area. Looks like the seal has lost its bounce possibly caused by it being where I grip it to put the hood down.

So any suggestions short of replacement of hood or seal?

Due to work I may have to sell in the not too far distant future and be without an MG for the first time in 25 consecutive years. :( so don't want to start a huge spending spree just yet

odd ideas, to pass the time.. LV6

Anyone who knows me, will know I have.... "odd" ideas, from time to time. Sometime they get built, sometimes it's just something to ponder to keep my mind busy.

This, is the latter.

Take a KV6, leave only the block, sump, and crank. Fit L series conrods, pistons, and heads with the last cylinder chopped off. 2.5L L series V6! :D

The first thing which stopped the idea, was the fact the bores in the KV6 are 80mm, and the L is 94mm. With the bores already so close, an overbore was out of the question, but the EW7 HDi engine, has pistons with a diameter of 82.7mm.

Machine oversize liners for the pistons, thin down the width of the conrods if needed, and have "pockets" in the outer edges of the liners to allow the valves to fit (like was common practice with A series engines)

So.. does anyone have any KV6 series conrods going spare for general measuring purposes? Are they the same as a normal K series? Are the V6 conrods longer than an L series conrod? What's the journal size of the V6? What's the bore spacing? More importantly... what else can people think of? This will 99.9999% never EVER be built, but it's fun to think outside the box once in a while :)

The only limitations I'd say to aim for, are use as many "stock" parts as possible.

So, fire away!
